Cold settles over the muddy lane beside the stables. Bobinko and Lazlo crouch near the stall, shoulder to shoulder, with a flask between them and a heel of dry bread.

Inside the stall, the stallion shifts once, then goes still again. His breathing stays slow and even, warm against the straw.

I was not always on the right side of the Tryars.

They had my brother working their ledgers, then their fences, then their lies. When I spoke against them, they marked me as trouble.

So when I see them pressing you, I know the shape of it. That is why I am here, Bobinko. I want to see you stand.

He takes the flask back, breaks the bread cleanly in two, and offers the larger piece across the dark.

The stable yard is quiet, and the stallion is settled.

Bobinko slips away from the stable yard, low and quiet as a shadow in mud. He crosses between dark stalls while lantern light blurs on the wet ground.

At the Tryars’ tack stall, two handlers argue in hushed voices over a fresh race tag and a restless bay mare. Bobinko catches the shape of it, another entry, already saddled and meant to run.

Another horse. They brought a second one in.

He leans just enough to see the mare clearly, broad-chested and sharp-eyed, with a white blaze and a groom’s hand on her bridle. The groom starts, and Bobinko ducks back into the dark before he is noticed.

A loose strap on Bobinko’s boot snags a peg, and he jerks free with a soft scrape of leather on wood. The sound dies fast, but one handler’s head turns toward the lane.

Back near the stall, Lazlo waits in the lantern spill. The stallion lifts his head from the straw as Bobinko returns, and the stablehand glances over from farther off, saying nothing.

You saw them, then. Tell me it is worth worrying over.
