Huantah reaches the lava river as heat-loving creatures flee its blackened edges. Waves of furnace air roll over the stone, carrying ash and the sharp scent of sulfur.

Along the opposite bank, a sinister red-and-blue dragon advances after them. Bone spines jut from its neck, casting crooked shadows through the ruddy glare.

Return, and be driven back. The river is mine.

Its voice rolls across the molten current. Every creature scrambles away except one, trapped where a shelf of scorched stone narrows between the lava and the dragon’s bulk.

This lava is not merely territory. It is my reason for existence, and it belongs to me more than it belongs to all others.

The trapped creature presses against the rock, finding no path around the glowing river. The dragon’s advancing shadow reaches it, while Huantah stands within sight on the near bank.

Heat shimmers between Huantah and the far shore. The dragon has not yet turned toward him, leaving a narrow moment in which intervention remains possible.

Huantah plants his heavy feet against the scorched bank and draws static through his charged frame. Blue-white arcs leap across the lava’s glare toward the dragon.

The current strikes the red-and-blue dragon squarely, crawling over its scales in branching flashes. Its spined silhouette jerks, and the furnace wind carries a sharp crack of thunder.

You dare command lightning against me?

The dragon staggers sideways from the river’s edge, its claws gouging black stone. The trapped creature slips past the opening and flees along the far bank.

Your power has teeth, ancient one. So does mine.

Smoke curls from the dragon’s hide, but it remains upright. Its eyes fix on Huantah across the molten current, no longer overlooking him.

Huantah gathers another charge beneath his striped hide and thrusts it across the lava. Blue-white forks strike the dragon’s chest and neck in a blinding burst.

The red-and-blue dragon convulses, its claws tearing furrows through the scorched bank. Sparks crawl between its bone spines as smoke pours from its scales.

Enough! You make the river witness pain, then call yourself its master?

The current rebounds through the molten air and scorches Huantah’s forward claws. The pain is sharp, and the fresh charge gutters from his limbs.

Your lightning reaches me, ancient one. It also tells me exactly where you stand.

The dragon remains upright, but one wing droops and its movement falters. Across the lava, the rescued creature vanishes among the ash-dark stones.

Arcane force gathers around Huantah’s crowned horns, forming a cluster of pale, darting missiles. They launch across the lava without sound, each curving toward the wounded dragon.

The missiles strike the red-and-blue dragon in rapid succession, bursting into clean violet flashes across its chest, neck, and drooping wing. Its stance collapses.

That is no mere spark. You wield older law than the river knows.

The dragon drops heavily onto one knee at the far bank, claws braced against scorched stone. The lava surges behind it, briefly illuminating cracks in its battered scales.

You have broken my claim before the river itself. Remember this victory, ancient one, for it will draw hunters to your trail.

As the spell’s light fades, the dragon’s collapse reveals a narrow basalt crossing upstream, cooled enough to bear Huantah’s weight. Beyond it, the fleeing creature’s tracks remain visible.

Huantah

Leave the creatures alone in this region, and I will stop fighting.

Huantah’s offer crosses the lava with the heat shimmer. His scorched claws remain raised, but no new charge gathers around them.

You bargain after breaking me, ancient one. Yet your terms are clear. I will leave these creatures and this region.

The dragon forces itself upright, then withdraws along the far bank. Its shadow recedes from the fleeing creatures’ tracks, and the narrow crossing lies open.

The river is surrendered for now. But your lightning has marked you, and hunters will follow that mark.

The agreement holds, but the dragon’s warning carries a concrete price: Huantah’s arcane discharge has left his forward claws scorched and trembling.

Behind the retreating dragon, the rescued creatures vanish into ash-dark terrain. The basalt crossing remains firm, leading toward their trail and away from the contested river.
