The attic door swings wide. A translucent woman in Victorian mourning clothes glides in, white hands folded over a damp black veil. The air turns knife-cold at once. Elias drops to his knees, staring as if he has seen a funeral walk through the wall.

The Mourning Woman

The Mourning Woman

Too late... too late...

She ignores Elizabeth completely and drifts toward the boarded hatch. Her fingers pass through the wood, and the faint black pulse beneath the boards answers her touch.

Who are you?

The Mourning Woman

The Mourning Woman

Margaret is waking. The seam is thinning.

Elias lifts his head, pale and shaking, one hand braced on the floorboards as he keeps his distance from the hatch. The boards shiver again, harder this time, but the boards hold.

Do not let her reach it. If the veil parts, we are done for.

Elizabeth lunges for the fireplace poker, but her hand skids on cold iron. The miss jars her shoulder, and the weapon clatters against the hearth stones without finding the ghost.

The Mourning Woman does not flinch. She turns her veiled head toward the sound, and the black pulse under the hatch quickens in answer.

The Mourning Woman

The Mourning Woman

It hears you now... not the boards. You.

Elias freezes, then looks from Elizabeth to the seam in the wood with dawning dread, as if the wrong rhythm has finally been named.

The attic seems to tighten around the hatch. Dust lifts in a thin ring, and the hammering below falls into the same stubborn pattern Elizabeth made with her own hands.

The pattern is the breach. Not the boards.

The apparition keeps drifting, no longer to strike but to point, her faded veil trailing toward the hatch seam, as if inviting Elizabeth to choose between the floor and the rhythm beneath it.

Keep Margaret from reaching the hatch

Grab the Mourning Woman's veil to force a revelation.

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Elizabeth snaps forward and catches the Mourning Woman by the trailing veil. The fabric is cold as grave water, but it yields in her fist.

The Mourning Woman

The Mourning Woman

Ah... there. Look with me.

The ghost twists, not resisting, and the veil peels back from a face that is not quite a face, only a hollowed grief fixed toward the hatch.

The seam is answering her, not the boards.

A sharp chill tears through the attic. Elias stumbles backward, knocking into a stack of boxes, and the hammering below swells in furious time with the pulse under the floor.

Elias Blackwood

Elias Blackwood

No, no... it is waking on the rhythm. Stop it!

Elizabeth holds the veil fast, and for one terrible instant the dark seam in the hatch reflects a pale, widening eye.

The air shudders. Whatever is below turns fully toward the attic, and the boards begin to groan under the new weight of its attention.

Elizabeth tightens her grip and hauls the veil close, not pleading, just insisting. The Mourning Woman tilts into that pressure, and her weeping thins to a whisper as if the cloth itself is remembering a name.

The Mourning Woman

The Mourning Woman

Not my throat you seize, little mistress. The seam answers what is offered to it.

Her hand lifts and points through the hatch boards, not at the eye of darkness, but at the rhythm beneath them. The pounding below does not stop, yet it stutters, as though listening.

Elias Blackwood

The pattern. It takes its cue from the rhythm. Break the cadence, and it cannot settle on her!

The ghost’s shoulders sag with a cold, sorrowful patience, and for one dreadful instant her hollow gaze meets Elizabeth’s as if offering an answer through grief instead of words.

The Mourning Woman

The Mourning Woman

Do you hear it now, dear child? Margaret wakes where the sound is made. Not sealed, not soothed, only called.

The attic settles into a brittle hush. Frost feathers the boards, the dark seam in the hatch narrows to a slit, and the next beat of the unseen thing waits for Elizabeth to choose whether to answer it, or break the rhythm first.
