Rhythm of the Blackwood Blood Debt

The attic air hangs thick with dust and old lamp-smoke. Elizabeth de Agincourt steps into the low rafters of Blackwood manor as a nail shrieks into wood beside her.

Ahead, Elias Blackwood hammers boards across the floor, frantic and half-finished. His shoulders jerk with every blow. He does not look up.

Below, something heavy thuds against the basement door. Once. Twice. The iron-bound slab shivers, then creeps a fraction across the boards.

A cracked whisper leaks from Elias as he drives another nail. His bloodshot eyes dart toward the hatch in the floor, wide with terror and certainty.

The basement door bucks again. Dust skates over the attic boards. One loose plank lifts, just enough to show a seam of black below.

Elias stops mid-swing, staring at Elizabeth as if deciding whether to beg or barricade the hatch with his own body.

Elizabeth lunges in and wrenches the hammer from Elias Blackwood's grip. The tool twists free with a dry crack of knuckles and wood, and Elias stumbles back from the boards.

Without waiting for his consent, she sets the hammer to work. Nails bite down, one after another, as the loosened plank is driven hard into place over the shuddering hatch.

Below them, the thing in the basement hits the door with a wet, deliberate thud. The frame trembles. A second board jumps under Elizabeth's hands, but the gap narrows.

A sour draught pushes up through the floorboards, cold enough to sting the skin. For one heartbeat, the black seam below seems to stare back.
