The clerk straightens a ledger and watches Jax approach through the hush of the auction house. Quills scratch. Wax and old paper hang in the air. The blue-threaded cord from the market sits in Jax's hand like a signal.

The Clerk
You again. If this is about the bag, the woman at the market was plain enough, bring me an unbroken seal if you want doors opened.
He taps the ledger with two fingers, then slides a scrap of parchment across the desk. On it is a path to the next stall, marked with a cramped sign and a wax mark in the corner.

The Clerk
That cord means you're seen. The stalls that trade in small wonders keep accounts, names, and favors. Follow the path, or be turned away.

Jax
I need the seal, and I need the route.
The clerk's expression does not change, but he lifts the drawer key from his belt and sets it beside the parchment, not as a gift, but as a warning. Somewhere beyond the market lanes, Jax can now see the trade network behind the boots and artifacts, hidden in ledgers and locked wood.

The Clerk
Then start with the house of seals. If you return with proof, the bag can be bargained for. If not, the drawer stays shut.
✓ Quest Accepted
Bring the unbroken seal to the clerk
“*I decided to say screw it and I decked the guy I knocked him out and I decided to take the seal and the guy is pretty much accidentally out cold for months because of my hard decking*”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled -2)

Jax drives a hard fist into the clerk’s chest and jawline in one brutal motion, and the man folds back over the desk. The ledger slips sideways. Quills clatter. The drawer key skids across the wood and stops near Jax’s hand.
The clerk drops limp in his chair, eyes shut, breath shallow and uneven. The wax seal stamp is visible beside his elbow, still warm from use.

Jax
The key is right there.
Jax snatches the key and the clerk’s fresh seal together, the blue-threaded cord brushing his wrist as he moves. The desk gives a sharp creak under the rush.
A smear of ink marks the heel of Jax’s hand, and one of the clerk’s pages tears free and drifts to the floor. The room stays quiet, but the hush feels thinner now.
From beyond the doorway, market footsteps slow for a beat, then continue on. No one comes in yet.

The Clerk
Mmph...
The clerk slumps deeper, out cold, while the unbroken seal is now in Jax’s possession. Somewhere in the market lane, the next stall waits.

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +0)

Jax gets the vial free, tips it to the clerk’s lips, and the bitter liquid disappears into the man’s slack mouth. The clerk coughs once, weak and wet, then goes still again.
Then Jax strips the clerk’s boots from his feet, working the leather loose in a fast, practiced pull. The desk leg scrapes. One boot thumps to the floor, then the other.
Under the chair, Jax finds a bundled satchel and a small backpack, both packed tight. A green pair of rubber boots with bulging toes sits by the clerk’s stool, muddied but serviceable.
He takes the lot, and the clerk’s belt catches on a desk corner with a sharp snap. The sound is small, but it cuts hard through the market hush.
The clerk stirs, blinking through the potion’s fog, brow knitting as if he has lost the shape of the room. His hand gropes at empty air where the seal had been.

The Clerk
My seal... who took it?
He lolls toward the doorway, confused and unsteady, while the blue-threaded cord on the desk slips over the ink page. The stall beyond the lane is still waiting.

Jax hauls the clerk’s boots clear of the chair and plants them on the floor beside his own, the leather still warm from the man’s feet. The satchel and backpack sag against his arm, but the boots come free without a struggle.

Jax
He has them.
The clerk’s gaze drops to the empty space under the desk, then snaps to Jax’s hands. His mouth tightens as memory returns in uneven pieces.

The Clerk
Those are stock boots, not mine to lose. Put them down and the seal stays intact.
He reaches weakly for the desk edge, but the blue-threaded cord has slid farther across the ink page, and the drawer key is no longer where it was.

The Clerk
No... wait. The wax seal was on my desk a moment ago.
He stares past Jax toward the lane, suddenly uneasy, as if someone else has already passed through the stall and left him only the questions.
“*I knocked him out again and also gave him a potion to make him forget since his boots are in my inventory now and he's out cold for 3 hours and then I took off with his boots in my inventory*”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +3)

Jax steps in close and the clerk sags back under the second удар, his eyes rolling shut before he can shout. The blue-threaded cord slips off the page and lands across the desk edge as the man goes limp again.
Jax tips the potion to the clerk’s lips. A little spills onto the ink, and the clerk swallows on instinct, his jaw working once before his head lolls sideways.
The clerk’s hand opens. A small wax token, stamped with the auction house mark, drops into Jax’s palm with the drawer key.

The Clerk
Blue thread... not the first hand to reach this desk today...
His eyelids flutter, then sink. Whatever he meant to say slips away with him.
Under the desk, the locked drawer sits ajar from the key’s turn. Inside is a folded slip tied with blue thread, already prepared for the next stall.
The market noise keeps moving outside the stall, but now the path is plain, and the clerk cannot follow it.
“Is his boots in my inventory now”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 32)

Jax
The clerk's boots are heavy, but they fit perfectly in the satchel alongside my own collection.
Jax glances down at the satchel, confirming the weight of the stolen footwear is indeed present among his belongings.
“Now I'm going outside to go to her”
