Betrayal at the Extraction Point

The lift grinds to a halt. As the doors hiss open, the promised extraction point is a nightmare of scorched metal and silence. The extraction ship is gone, replaced by the jagged remains of security turrets.

Anna

The signal is being jammed from within the base. We were tricked.

We are sitting ducks in this hangar. The Dirge will be on us within seconds.

Max

We cannot stay here. If the ship is gone, we head for the auxiliary launch pad. It is our only remaining tether to the orbital platform.

Max

The air tastes like ozone and burnt plastic. Every second we waste is a gift to the swarm.

Max points toward the blast shutters at the far end of the hangar, where a secondary hangar bay leads to the exterior plains of Necropolis. A heavy maintenance crawler waits in the gloom, its engine flickering with life.

As Max signals the formation, his cybernetic link jitters, sending a jagged spike of static through his vision. His command to advance falters. The floor plates beneath him buckle unexpectedly, his own augmentation glitching and locking his leg mid-stride.

We are exposed, you idiot! The floor is giving way!

His systems are failing. He is not a commander, he is a liability.

From the shadows of the maintenance pit, the chittering sound of the Dirge rises into a high-pitched scream. The swarm does not wait for order. They pour from the ventilation ducts, forcing the group to scatter rather than hold the line.

Max

Max

My leg is a stone. If I cannot override this glitch, the Dirge will reach us before I can even draw my weapon.

Anna

Anna

Max, look out!

A massive, multi-limbed Dirge warrior lunges from the ceiling, its chitinous blades glowing with residual energy, plummeting directly toward the center of the formation.

The glitch is just a bad sync in the neural bus. Redirect the flow.

Max channels a surge of willpower into his cybernetic leg, his mind acting as a firewall against the digital corruption. A series of rapid, rhythmic pulses sparks along his thigh plating, and the locking mechanism disengages with a sharp mechanical hiss. He plants his foot, his muscles coiling like steel springs, and he pivots at the exact second the Dirge warrior's claws descend.

Max

Max

Not today.

He swings his heavy shoulder into the creature's midsection, intercepting the strike. The impact throws both of them back into the debris-choked hangar floor.

Keep moving, Max! Winona, grab the crawler ignition!

That thing is going to kill us all if we stay. I am not waiting for a hero.

Winona lunges toward the maintenance crawler while the Dirge warrior flips its body in mid-air, landing on all fours with a guttural, wet clicking sound. It tracks Max with iridescent, compound eyes, its thorax glowing a dangerous, pulsing violet.

The violet glow in its thorax... it’s syncing with the hangar’s power grid. That’s not biology, that’s an integrated power core. Hit the junction.

Max lunges, his movements fluid despite the cybernetic protest in his knee. He ignores the razor-sharp talons whipping toward his face, fixating instead on the faint, rhythmic pulse beneath the Dirge's translucent plating. He slashes with his utility vibro-blade, aiming not for the beast's neck, but for the exposed conduit nestled within the chittering mass of its chest.

Max

Max

Found you.

The blade sinks into the glowing node, shearing through synthetic nerves and coolant lines. A spray of bioluminescent, viscous fluid erupts, searing the floor and causing the creature to shriek in a high-frequency burst that shatters the nearby monitor banks. The Dirge staggers, its luminescence flickering as its internal systems begin to cascade.
