The freed witnesses gather among fallen shelves in the temple archive. Priests bind bruised arms, while others lift damp scrolls from shallow pools beneath the broken ceiling.
Chief Arvok remains with Quin and carries the joined seal to a stone table. Its two halves hold together, but the bright fracture still divides the iron.

Priest Halven
If Varkesh enters as claimant, does that mean the crown can still return to him?

Chief Arvok
It means the temple denies his stolen kingship. A claimant may petition, gather allies, or challenge the judgment, but the rite grants him no throne.
Nearby, an old succession ledger lies open across a fallen lectern. Its final pages are sealed with dark wax stamped by an unfamiliar sign: three narrow strokes circling an empty center.

Archivist Meret
That mark is absent from every royal register. If the ledger names the rightful succession, someone concealed the answer before Varkesh ever arrived.

Chief Arvok
Then the next judgment waits in those sealed pages. Quin, the temple has shown you the proof. What will you do with the question it leaves behind?

✓ Quest Accepted
Reveal the rightful succession
“I examine the unfamiliar seal on the ledger’s dark wax.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -2)

Quin bends over the ledger and studies the dark wax without disturbing its seal. Three narrow strokes circle an empty center, each groove filled with faint silver dust.

quin
The strokes were pressed from outside inward, around a space deliberately left empty.
As Quin angles the page toward the archive’s blue fire, the wax gives a brittle click. A sharp edge nicks his fingertip, and one red bead marks the margin.

Archivist Meret
Hold still. That is no royal stamp. The circle is a boundary, and the empty center bears a deliberate absence.
The silver dust stirs beneath Quin’s gaze, revealing hair-thin letters around the seal: “By witness denied, by blood concealed, by oath awaiting.”

Chief Arvok
Then the ledger was not merely hidden. Someone bound its succession to a witness who has not yet spoken.
Meret carefully wraps the nicked finger and turns the ledger toward the gathered priests. The unfamiliar seal remains intact, but its meaning now stands exposed.
“I ask Meret to identify the hidden witness”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +2)

quin
Meret, identify the hidden witness. The altar has exposed the seal, and the ledger should reveal whose testimony was bound to it.
Meret studies the silver letters, then warms a sliver of sealing wax over the archive flame. The unfamiliar mark softens without breaking, and hidden ink blooms beneath it.

Archivist Meret
The witness is Seris Vale, last oath-bearer of the unthroned line. Her testimony was sealed after she named Varkesh’s claim a fraud.
A second inscription emerges beneath the first, written in a cramped hand: “Seris lives beyond the Ashen Ford, under a name given by necessity.” The priests murmur around the table.

Chief Arvok
Then the rightful succession has a living voice. Varkesh will seek her before this temple can summon her.

Archivist Meret
The ledger gives more. Seris carries the unbroken half of the founding oath, and only her word can complete the judgment.
The joined seal grows warm in Quin’s grasp. Across its silver fracture, a faint line of light points toward the archive’s western passage, where a dust-choked map bears the mark of the Ashen Ford.
“I follow the light toward the Ashen Ford”

Quin follows the silver line through the western passage, carrying the joined seal as its light guides him across dust-coated steps and forgotten chambers.

Chief Arvok
We will secure the archive and shelter the witnesses. Find Seris Vale before Varkesh can silence the truth.
Archivist Meret unrolls the dust-choked map and marks the route with charcoal. The passage opens beyond the temple into a valley road leading west.

Archivist Meret
The Ashen Ford lies two days beyond the cedar ridges. Follow the old boundary stones, and the seal should keep its direction.
Quin leaves the temple beneath a paling sky. Behind him, the bronze doors stand open, while white runes preserve a clear refuge for those who remain.
The journey passes beneath wind-bent cedars and over broad hills silvered with morning frost. Each evening, the seal’s light points steadily west.
At last, the Ashen Ford appears below a ridge, its pale stones crossing a dark, slow river. The silver guide settles upon a weathered milestone bearing the same three-stroked mark.
