Rain needles the road outside Xeranth, and the city’s outer lights blur ahead like cold coins in water. Valimire rides hard beside the Rider, both horses slick with spray and mud.

The Soul-Anchor did not simply crack. Someone bent a ward-line, then fed it too much death at once. Now the seal is leaking.

She jerks her reins toward the dark silhouette of the capital walls, where watchfires tremble in the storm.

Mira Halden

If it fails fully, the buried dead answer first. Lord Edrin Vale is trying to hold the panic inside the keep and keep the breach quiet.

Valimire Corneleus

The leak is spreading through a ward, not just breaking stone.

A sudden white flare blooms ahead, not lightning, but a ward-spark from the city gate. The horses shy as the air turns sharp and thin.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

That is new. Either the barrier is failing faster, or someone has just touched it again.

We need to get there, and fast.

The horses hit the gate road at a hard, wet surge, and the city walls loom up through the rain. Watchfires spit behind the parapets as the ward-spark crackles again above the arch.

Valimire drives his mount straight for the gate, taking the lead by a length. Mud flies from the hooves, and the Rider stays close, her scroll case bumping at her saddle.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

There, at the gate. If the wards are failing, the guards need warning before the next flare.

The nearer the arch, the stranger the air feels, thin and sharp around the skin. The ward-light crawls across the stone like a wound trying to close.

Valimire Corneleus

Valimire Corneleus

The gate is open, and the ward is still active.

They reach the outskirts of Xeranth in a spray of rain and mud, with the outer gate and its trembling light now directly before them.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

Hold with me here. If something touched the ward again, I want to see what comes out of the gate.

While we are waiting I might as well learn your name? Or do you not have one mysterious Rider?

While we wait, I might as well learn your name. Or do you not have one, mysterious Rider?

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

I have one, yes. Mira Halden. And I would prefer the guards hear it after they hear the warning.

She glances from Valimire to the gate, then back again, rainwater tracking down her cheek beneath the hood.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

Names matter less than timing here. If the ward flares again, I need you watching the arch, not my face.

Valimire Corneleus

Valimire Corneleus

Mira Halden. She gave it without hesitation.

Above them, the ward-light tightens to a pale thread along the stone, and the gate stands open on the edge of speaking.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

Stay ready, Valimire. If something answers from within, we move together.

Wait with Mira for something to come out of the gate.

The gate holds its breath, then a narrow seam of cold light slips from the stone arch and draws your attention straight to the shadowed opening beyond.

Mira goes still in the saddle, her head angled toward the gate instead of toward you, as if listening through the rain for footsteps that are not yet there.

Valimire Corneleus

Valimire Corneleus

The ward-line is active. Something inside is touching it.

A shape shifts just past the threshold, not a guard, not a beast, but a hunched figure outlined by the gate glow as it stumbles into view.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

There. Keep watching the arch.

The figure does not rush out. It pauses under the ward-light, and the pale thread above the stone quivers once, as if recognizing it.

Valimire lets his sight slip past rain and stone, and the shape in the arch blooms with afterlight. The soul inside it is not human, not wholly alive, and not alone.

Valimire Corneleus

Valimire Corneleus

A tether runs through it. The figure is being worn like a cloak.

The glow sharpens into layered strands, one old and starving, another fresh and hooked fast to the breach above the gate.

Mira tightens in the saddle when the ward-thread shivers again, and the hunched figure lifts its head toward Valimire as if it has sensed the gaze.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

Well? Tell me what it is before it crosses the arch.

The thing at the gate takes one slow step forward, and the pale ward-light above it flickers between guarding the city and letting it through.

It is not human. Whatever it is, we need to stop it.

FAILURE (Mediocre Arcana, rolled -2)

Valimire narrows his sight on the hunched shape, but the ward-glare fractures the answer. Its outline is wrong for flesh, yet too layered for a simple spirit, and the breach keeps writing over the truth.

Valimire Corneleus

Valimire Corneleus

Not human. Not cleanly dead, either.

The thing halts halfway through the arch, and the threads around it tug in opposite directions. For a heartbeat, the gate seems unsure whether to bar it or bless it.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

Valimire, what is it doing to the ward-line?

His attempt to name it falls short, but the failure sharpens the danger. Whatever wears that body notices the scrutiny, and its next step comes angled toward the breach rather than the city.

Above them, the pale light tightens into a thin seam across the stone, and the path under the arch is no longer inviting. Something at the threshold now blocks the way forward.

Focus on the soul, does the soul has dark intent and can I disperse it?

Valimire lets his sight sink past the glare and into the thing's center. The parasitic soul shows itself at last, a dark knot clamped to a frightened remnant, feeding on the ward's strain.

Valimire Corneleus

Valimire Corneleus

It is not whole. The dark part is the parasite.

He presses, and the knot loosens under his will. A seam of dead pressure peels away from the body, and the ward-light stops fighting its shape.

The figure stumbles in place, suddenly less hidden. Under the hooded bulk is a bound courier, eyes wide, lips blue with fear, dragged here against his own soul.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

By the wards... it has been wearing him.

The parasitic shell snaps back like torn smoke, exposing a thin trail of black residue along the archway stone. For one clear heartbeat, the path through the gate is open.

Then the freed courier jerks a hand toward the city side of the arch, not in attack, but in warning, as if something deeper inside Xeranth has felt the disruption.

Valimire reaches into the courier’s soul and grips the parasite by its blackened edge. The remnant tears free in silence, a thin shred of dead pressure peeling out into his hand as the ward above the gate steadies.

The courier gasps and sags, no longer dragged by that lingering weight, while the last smear of corruption flakes off his cloak. He blinks hard, sudden and shell-shocked, as if waking from a burial dream.

Valimire Corneleus

Valimire Corneleus

The remnant is small, but there may be more where it came from.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

You pulled it out. Good. Look at him, he is himself again.

The freed courier turns his shaking hand toward the city and points through the gap in the arch. Beyond the gate, something answers with a low, distant tremor in the dark streets of Xeranth.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

That warning was not for us. Something inside the city felt it.

Rain ticks against the stone as the ward-gap shivers open and shut, no longer fully blocked, but still unsafe to trust. The courier stares toward the interior, mouth open, waiting for Valimire to decide whether to press in or stop and listen.

We should enter farther. There may be more people out of control.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

We go farther in. If anyone else is fighting this, we find them.

Valimire guides his mount through the wavering gap in the ward. The seam gives a cold pulse, but it parts for him, and the city road opens beneath the rain.

Mira Halden

Mira Halden

Then stay close. If the wards flare again, I want eyes on you, not behind you.

The courier swallows and falls in behind them, still pale from the thing he lost. Ahead, Xeranth lies dim and restless, its streets carrying that same low tremor deeper in.

A Courrier

I know a route to the inner wards. Shorter than the main way, if the lanes are still open.

Mira tightens her grip on the scroll and leans toward the darkened street, listening. Somewhere inside the city, a hard clang answers the distant shaking.

Valimire enters Xeranth at the courier’s lead, the gate behind them shivering on its broken seam, and the choice settles into a fresh one, follow the narrow lanes, or stop and learn what just struck metal in the dark.
