Bo Primitif yanks at Toby’s sleeve and points hard at the closet gap, trying to make room where there is hardly any.

The Tall Boy jerks again, then scrapes both hands down the closet wall, breathing fast and uneven.

The closet door is open a crack.

Toby, move, please.

Dust drifts in from the classroom as the floorboards outside groan louder, making the tiny space feel even smaller.

The Tall Boy

The Tall Boy

My hands, they feel wrong.

Bo keeps hold of Toby’s arm, his eyes wet and wide, while he leans toward the opening like he is ready to bolt if the room shifts again.

Their uniforms are ripping apart and they look like caveboys with huge hairy primitive feet?

Toby gets a clear look at their lower half, and the change is already plain. Bo’s pant legs have split at the seams, his shoes pushed off by thick, broad feet with a rough, caveboy look. The Tall Boy’s sleeves hang useless now, while his hands look larger and stranger by the second, as if the same force is climbing him in two directions at once.

Toby Primitif

Their feet are already out of the shoes.

Bo Primitif

Toby, look, it’s tearing everywhere.

Bo loosens his grip on Toby’s sleeve and stares down, frozen between panic and wonder. The Tall Boy stops clawing at the wall, flexes his fingers once, and swallows hard at the sight of his own hands.

The Tall Boy

The Tall Boy

My hands, they are getting bigger.

Dust slips through the crack at the door, and the closet seems to hold its breath. Outside, the classroom groans again, louder this time, pressing the boys toward a choice they do not like.

The boys can’t walk now because of their huge feet and they starting to lose the ability to to speak like boys.

Toby watches the Tall Boy’s mouth work strangely, like the words have to push through mud. Bo’s breathing turns fast and shallow, and he keeps glancing from his feet to the closet door.

Bo Primitif

Bo Primitif

My feet, they are huge. I cannot fit them back.

The Tall Boy tries to answer, but it comes out broken and rough, more grunt than sentence. He looks alarmed at the sound of it and clamps his lips shut.

The Tall Boy

The Tall Boy

I, I can’t... talk right.

Outside the closet, the classroom gives another heavy groan, and the door quivers in its frame. Inside, the cramped little space feels even smaller as both boys stare at their changing hands and feet.

Toby Primitif

Their voices are slipping.

Bo swallows, then points a trembling finger toward the door, as if he wants Toby to decide what happens next.

The boys have to walk with their knuckles now like monkeys. Bo is losing his memory now.

Bo’s eyes flick between Toby’s face and the floor, and the change in him becomes clearer. His fingers curl tighter, as if he is remembering his hands are not meant for that. The Tall Boy’s shoulders slump, then rise again in a rough, awkward rhythm, like he is learning a new way to breathe.

Bo lowers onto his knuckles for balance, his huge feet dragging behind him in the cramped space. He stares at them with a blank, almost puzzled look, like the sight arrives a second too late.

Bo Primitif

Bo Primitif

I know these feet. They are mine... but my head feels far away.

The Tall Boy follows the same shape without being told, bracing one broad hand on the closet floor. His mouth works once, then stops, and he blinks hard at Toby as if the words he wants are slipping out of reach.

The Tall Boy

The Tall Boy

Hands on the floor. Walk like that. Why does that feel right?

The closet goes still except for the soft scrape of their new knuckle-walk and the faint shudder of the classroom beyond. Bo keeps staring at Toby, waiting, not just for help now, but for the next thing to be named.
