The Door Beneath the Chapel
the skeptical journalist
The Skeptical Journalist

At the crossroads, the ruined chapel leans beneath a colorless sky. A young adult woman with wind-tangled dark hair and a red scarf, slight and sharp-featured, in a weathered brown coat and mud-stained boots, braces herself against a basement door in the broken foundation.

The door sits several feet beyond its frame, dragging its hinges across bare earth. The surrounding stones still outline the old opening, leaving a black seam beneath the ground.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

There. You see it? The architecture says the door is closed. The dirt says it moved.

She gestures toward a canvas satchel near her boots. Brass fittings, a tarnished locket, and something wrapped in oilcloth peek from its open mouth. Then the door knocks once.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

I found those below. Valuable, probably historical. I am not saying supernatural. I am saying the opening is getting smaller.

The seam contracts with a slow grind. Dust trickles inward instead of out, and a second knock answers from beneath the chapel, heavier than the first.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

If you came for salvage, decide quickly. If you came to prove me wrong, stand back and watch.

She keeps one hand on the displaced door and looks toward Niel across the weeds, waiting while the darkness presses against the narrowing gap.

Niel

What do you need from me exactly? I was told to come here without a reason.

The journalist studies him over the narrowing seam. Her guarded expression loosens, not into trust, but into the practical relief of someone finally given a usable question.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

I need you to hold the door open while I retrieve the object beneath it. Then I need you to tell me whether you hear anything calling from inside.

She points to the oilcloth bundle, then removes the tarnished locket from her satchel and places it in the weeds between them. Its lid trembles without opening.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

My name is Mara Voss. If you walk away now, I lose the only witness who can confirm what happens next. If you stay, you owe me the truth.

The admission gives him a clear task and a clear liability: Mara will use his testimony, and his presence will tie him to whatever the chapel records below.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

So decide, Niel. Hands on the door, eyes on the dark. I will not pretend this is safe, but I will stop pretending I can do it alone.

Beneath the displaced door, something drags a fingernail across stone. Mara waits beside the locket, her request settled and her bargain plainly exposed.

Niel

Niel

Okay. This should help. Let’s get started so I can get paid.

Niel clicks on his flashlight and steps to the displaced door. He plants both hands against its edge, boots sinking into the damp earth as he bears down.

The heavy slab yields under his strength and swings wide enough to clear the opening. The grinding stops. A narrow stone stair descends into darkness, fully exposed.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

Good. Hold it there. Do not let go until I say so.

Mara drops to one knee and reaches for the oilcloth bundle. Niel’s beam finds pale markings carved along the stair, each one pointing downward like a hooked finger.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

You found the inscription. That was not visible before. Keep the light there, please.

With the doorway secured, Mara can reach the bundle without forcing the stones or disturbing the locket. Beneath the markings, one word is clear: RETURN.

“ok like this?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 58)

The Door Beneath the Chapel

Mara Voss

Mara unwraps the oilcloth with careful fingers. Inside lies a black iron key, its teeth wet with something that glistens like fresh ink.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

That is not what I found before. Do not move the light.

The flashlight beam trembles across the word RETURN. For one breath, the carved letters appear reversed, as though viewed from inside the stairwell.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

I need the key. I also need you to keep holding that door. The mechanism has started pulling again.

The slab shifts against Niel's palms, dragging a thin line through the earth. Mara closes her hand around the key, and the locket outside the doorway snaps open.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

Do not listen if it uses your voice.

From below, a low imitation of Niel's breathing rises up the stairs. Mara freezes beside the bundle, while the door presses harder against his hands.

“i grab her out of there and slam the stone slab back over the stairs.”

FAILURE (Great Strength, rolled -1)

The Door Beneath the Chapel

Mara Voss

Niel lunges through the doorway, catches Mara around the coat, and hauls her backward as the stone slab surges against his hands. The imitation below inhales with him.

He wrenches Mara clear and throws his weight into the slab. It grinds across the earth, but the descending stairs twist beneath it, preventing a clean seal.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

Niel, stop. The slab is catching on something below.

The stone drops crookedly and blocks most of the opening. A thin black gap remains at one side, breathing cold air over the weeds.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

There. The left wall. The stairs continue sideways behind the collapse.

The locket lies open beside the gap. Its tiny mirror reflects not the chapel, but a narrow passage branching from the buried stair, marked by the same hooked signs.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

We cannot seal it from here. But we have another way in, if that reflection is showing the truth.

Behind the crooked slab, the imitation exhales once more, then falls silent. Mara keeps the key clenched in her fist and stares at the locket.

“did you not hear that. it sounds like I was down there.”

NO (VeryLikely, rolled 89)

The Door Beneath the Chapel
Mara Voss
Mara Voss

The silence does not erase the sound. It lingers in the narrow gap, an imitation of Niel's breathing that Mara heard as clearly as he did.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

No. I heard it too.

Her eyes remain fixed on the locket's warped reflection. The tiny mirror shows the passage below, but offers no sign of a person standing within it.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

It sounded like you because it was copying you. Not because you were down there.

Mara shifts closer to the crooked slab without touching it. The black gap breathes cold air across the weeds, steady now, almost patient.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

That means it can hear us from below. It may know your voice better than I do.

The locket's reflected passage remains empty. Somewhere behind the buried stair, a faint scrape answers the quiet, too distant to identify as breath.

“look lets come back later with something more than a pocketknife. i am havening a bed feeling about this.”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Niel lowers the flashlight from the crooked slab and backs away from the black gap. The cold air follows him only as far as the weeds, then fades.

Mara closes the locket and retrieves it from the dirt, keeping the black iron key clenched in her other hand. She watches Niel retreat from the chapel foundation.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

That is sensible. Come back with rope, a stronger light, and something to mark the way.

Niel crosses the weeds toward the ruined road, leaving the buried stair and its crooked door behind. The chapel remains silent beneath the colorless sky.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

Do not bring anyone who will treat this like a dare. If the passage changes, I need someone who notices details.

At the road, Niel's flashlight catches the chapel window one last time. For an instant, the locket's reflection seems to shine there instead of in Mara's hand.

He leaves the crossroads with the chapel behind him and a clear plan to return later, better equipped than a flashlight and pocketknife allow.

Mara Voss

The flashlight is already in Niel’s hand when the chapel window goes dark. Behind him, the ruined road loses its evening sounds all at once.

At the foundation, the crooked slab shifts without grinding. A narrow opening appears, and Mara steps toward it as though pulled by a voice too low to hear.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

Niel. Hold the door. Slowly.

Niel moves forward and braces both hands against the stone. The flashlight beam enters the gap, revealing the side passage reflected earlier, now close enough to touch.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

That was not there when we left.

The black iron key jerks in Mara’s fist. From inside the passage, a voice copies her exactly, but speaks the words before she can breathe them.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

Do not answer it. Whatever happens, keep the opening wide.

The passage does not widen for Mara. Instead, the crooked slab jerks inward, wrenching against Niel’s grip as the darkness folds around the flashlight beam.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

No. Do not force it. The door is not opening for us.

The black iron key twists in Mara’s fist. Its teeth point toward the passage, and the cold air reverses, rushing outward hard enough to snuff the chapel’s remaining insectsong.

The Copied Voice

The Copied Voice

The door is not opening for us.

The flashlight catches a second Mara, a young adult human woman in her likeness, slender and indistinct in the beam, her turned face unreadable, inside the passage, standing several paces away with her face turned toward them. The real Mara recoils, but her reflection raises one hand.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

That is not my reflection. Keep the door open, but do not let it see you clearly.

The duplicate lowers its hand. Behind it, something unlatches deeper in the dark, and the passage lengthens beyond the flashlight’s reach.

Niel raises the flashlight and advances, bracing the crooked slab wide enough for Mara to stand clear. The beam catches the chapel’s dark windows above, intact but filmed with dust.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

No. Not the windows. If the passage is choosing its shape, breaking another entrance will only give it another threshold.

The duplicate remains several paces inside, its face turned away from the beam. When Niel’s light shifts toward the nearest window, it shifts too, keeping the same distance from him.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

Keep the light on the passage. Do not show it another way in.

The iron key stops twisting. Behind the false Mara, the lengthened corridor settles back into darkness, while the chapel windows show only the colorless sky and the two figures at the door.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

We find a way through this opening, or we leave it sealed. We do not make the building answer for us.

The copied figure lowers its head. No hand touches the stone, yet the gap narrows by an inch, leaving the flashlight beam thinner and the darkness closer.

Director's note

i look around for a way in

“ok”

The Door Beneath the Chapel
Mara Voss
Mara Voss

Niel raises the flashlight and steps closer, keeping both hands against the crooked slab. The beam traces the passage walls, searching for hinges, seams, or another opening.

The stone gives a fraction under his weight, enough to widen the gap without grinding. Dust slides from the ceiling, revealing a narrow ledge along the left wall.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

There. Along the wall. That ledge may lead around the collapse.

Mara crouches beside the opening and angles the iron key toward the ledge. Its black teeth point past the false figure, toward a darker break in the stone.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

I can see a passage beyond it. Not a door, exactly. More like the chapel was built around something already here.

The flashlight finds shallow footholds descending beside the ledge, each worn smooth by use. Nothing moves in the passage, and the opening holds steady beneath Niel’s grip.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

That is our way in. Keep the light low, and I will go first.

Mara gathers the key and steps toward the footholds, while Niel keeps the crooked slab open. The false figure remains distant, swallowed by the edge of the beam.

“you sure you want to go first?”

NO (Likely, rolled 81)

Niel

Niel

No.

The word stops Mara at the first foothold. She remains crouched beside the opening, one hand braced against the stone and the key held close to her chest.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

No? You do not want me going first.

Behind her, the false figure stays at the edge of the flashlight beam. Its outline does not advance, but its head tilts toward the exchange.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

All right. I will not pretend that is unreasonable. The passage may be waiting for whoever enters first.

The footholds remain dark and silent. Mara keeps her place beside them, watching Niel across the narrow opening while the crooked slab holds beneath his hands.

Director's note

i go in first.

“look we just saw one already inside. if whatever show ups like that again I should be the first one to jump it if possible.”

Niel

I will go first. If that thing appears again, I will hit it.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

All right. I believe you. Keep the light on the footholds, and do not let it draw you toward the dark.

Niel lowers the flashlight and steps onto the first foothold. The stone supports his weight, and the crooked slab remains open beneath his braced hand.

Mara shifts aside to give him room, keeping the iron key close. Behind her, the false figure stays motionless at the edge of the beam.

Mara Voss

Mara Voss

Slowly. If it shows your face, do not hesitate. Strike only what reaches for you.

Niel descends along the narrow ledge, flashlight held low and one shoulder guarding the opening. The passage accepts him without shifting, while the darkness waits below.

Mara follows close behind, leaving the false figure outside the strongest light. The iron key points into the deeper break, steady for the first time.
