Cold dawn breathes through the tent flap. Garindan steps inside and finds the friar and the knight locked in a hard, low argument over a heavy iron box on the table.

The Friar
The pardon is revoked. The host must carry the plague into the enemy camp, or all is lost.
The knight does not look at the box. He watches Garindan instead, still as a drawn blade.

The Friar
You will bear it. You are strong enough, and God has marked you for this road.
The iron box sits dead between them, lid banded tight, its seams dark with old wax. The tent canvas stirs again as the wind finds a gap.

The Knight
Choose quickly, man. Dawn will not wait for your conscience.

Garindan
The box is sealed. The friar wants me to take it.
Both men hold their ground, one pleading, one measuring. Outside, boots scrape past the tent, and the cold grows sharper at the opening.
✓ Quest Accepted
Refuse the friar's task
“I step between them and push the iron box off the table.”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Garindan steps between them and drives the iron box off the table. It slams to the floorboards with a dull, final clang, skidding to a stop by the friar's boots.

The Friar
No. Careful, you fool, do not open it here.
The knight shifts at once, hand tightening at his side. The friar's face drains pale as he looks not at Garindan, but at the fallen box.

The Knight
So that is your fear. Not refusal, the contents.

The Friar
You do not understand what follows if it is broken.
Cold air pours through the flap. The friar takes one stumbling half-step toward the box, then stops himself, jaw clenched, as if the floor itself might accuse him.

Garindan
The box matters more to him than the order.

“I press the friar for the truth”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +3)
Garindan holds the friar in place with a steady stare, and the man breaks first. His mouth works around a dry swallow, then he looks from the box to the knight as if measuring which lie will hurt less.

The Friar
It is not plague. It is my seal, and my ruin, if the wrong hands open it.

The Knight
At last. So the truth has a tongue.
The friar flinches at that, but keeps speaking. His boots edge back from the iron box, yet his eyes stay fixed on it with a kind of scared devotion.

The Friar
I bear it for the chapel treasury. The outer order is false. If the baron learns what is inside, he takes it and calls it justice.
The knight's hand leaves his belt. He gives Garindan a short, intent nod, as if the confession fits a shape he already suspected.

The Knight
Then your errand was theft dressed as piety.
The friar shuts his eyes for a heartbeat, then opens them on Garindan alone, raw and cornered, no longer pretending the box is only cargo.
✓ Quest Accepted
Expose what is inside the iron box
“I draw my blade and demand the friar reveal the key.”
SUCCESS (Superb Melee Weapons, rolled +0)

Garindan draws steel in one smooth motion, the blade catching dawn. He points it low, not at the friar’s throat, but at the lock itself, and the tent seems to shrink around the iron box.

Garindan
Show me the key.
The friar goes still. His hands rise a little, empty and trembling, then one of them drifts to the inside of his robe as if by habit he would protect what he fears most.

The Friar
You think I carry it for greed. I carry it because I was ordered to, and because I am the only one who knows what failing will cost us.

The Knight
And because you meant to hide it until it suited you. Speak plain, friar. Where is the key?
The friar’s gaze flicks to the knight, then back to Garindan’s sword. At last his fingers close on a cord beneath his habit, and he pulls free a small iron key, dark with use.

The Friar
There. Take it, if you will. But if that box is opened, the blame will not stay on my shoulders alone.
He holds the key out over the bare table, not offering trust so much as surrender. The knight watches, satisfied but wary, while the friar’s face betrays the truth he can no longer bury, he serves the chapel’s treasury, but he fears the treasury far less than whoever he believes will judge him for it.
“I take the key and open the box”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Garindan takes the key in one rough grip. The friar lets it go too quickly, as if the iron bites his skin. Garindan crouches, fits the key to the box, and turns it.
The lock gives with a dry click. Garindan lifts the lid, and stale linen and waxed cloth crowd the air, not plague stench, not poison, only hidden church goods wrapped tight against a rough journey.

The Friar
No...
The friar jerks back a half step, his eyes fixed on the opened box as if it has named him in public. The knight’s mouth tightens, and his satisfaction turns sharp.

The Knight
There it is. Chapel silver, hidden under holy cloth. You meant to send another man to die for this.
Garindan holds the lid open a moment longer. The key is warm in his palm, the cost of the act plain enough, and the tent feels smaller now that the truth has weight.

The Friar
You do not understand what was at risk. If the baron learns of this, he takes it all, and then the chapel loses everything.

“I ask the knight what he will do now”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Garindan
What do you do now?

The Knight
I take the truth to the captain, and I see this treasure counted, named, and guarded.

The Friar
You would shame the chapel for a chest of silver? Mercy should begin with the house of God.

The Knight
Mercy does not send another man to die in your stead.
The friar swallows hard. His hand creeps toward the box, then stops when he sees Garindan's sword still near his knee.

The Friar
If the knight speaks first, I lose the box and the tale with it.

The Knight
Speak plain, friar. Whom else have you told?
The tent goes still around the question, and the friar's answer hangs there, waiting to decide whether he is a thief alone or a man serving someone higher.

“I grab the friar by his robes and demand he name his accomplice.”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

Garindan steps in and fists the friar’s robe at the throat. Cloth bunches hard in his grip, and the little man jerks upright with a startled gasp.

Garindan
Name the man you answer to.

The Friar
I answer to no one. I only kept the silver from a worse hand than mine.
The knight makes a short, disbelieving sound. Garindan keeps the friar held fast, close enough to smell the sour panic on him.

The Friar
The baron’s steward knows the chapel stores. He pressed me, he said the count was due, and the war would empty the shrine if I did not act first.

The Knight
A steward. At last, plain words.
The friar’s eyes dart to the knight, then back to Garindan’s hand on his robe. He does not deny it.
