The Hooded Stranger
The Hooded Stranger

The Hooded Stranger crosses into the stone cave, dripping lake water onto the rough shore. Zakther examines their cloak, hands, and ribs in the firelight.

Bruises darken their side, and a shallow cut marks one hand. The wounds are painful, but nothing appears immediately disabling.

Maelin

Maelin

Armed men came upon me at the old ford. They struck me, took what little I carried, and drove me toward the lake country.

Maelin

Maelin

I reached the water, but my blood had already marked the reeds. The Lake Stalker found that trail and followed it.

Maelin

Maelin

This shelter may save me, yet my pursuers may read the same trail and come here.

Beyond the cave mouth, the lake lies still beneath the gray sky. A faint line of disturbed water leads from the reeds toward the shore, then vanishes in the gathering dusk.

✓ Quest Accepted

Determine whether the stranger's account is truthful

“what exactly did you do they don't just attack traveler for no reason they usually keep to themselves and hunt alone?”

What exactly did you do? They do not usually attack travelers without cause. They keep to themselves and hunt alone.

The stranger studies the fire instead of the lake. Beneath the torn cloak, their fingers find a stiff fold of cloth sewn into the lining.

Maelin

Maelin

I carried a message for the reeve of Fenmere. Not coin, not contraband. A sealed account of men taking tolls at the old ford.

They draw out the hidden cloth. Its wax seal is cracked, but the reeve's mark remains visible. Mud and a dark smear stain the folded edge.

Maelin

Maelin

They saw the seal and knew what I carried. Their leader tore the message from my hand, then ordered the others to drive me toward the reeds.

The seal matches the authority they claimed, and the injuries fit an attack meant to seize a message. Their account gains weight, though the missing message leaves one part unproven.

Maelin

Maelin

You have reason to doubt me. What would you need to see before you trusted the rest?

Stay here. I will retrieve the message. If you lied to me, I will kill you myself. Understood?

The threat settles between you and the fire. The stranger lowers the cloth, then gives a slow, deliberate nod.

Maelin

Maelin

Understood. I will not leave this cave, and I will not add another lie.

They turn the stained fold over and point to a faint impression pressed into the mud along its edge, a three-pronged fork beside a crooked line.

Maelin

Maelin

The leader wore a bronze clasp marked like this. His men carried the message toward the old ford, not back toward Fenmere.

Their gaze shifts to the cave mouth, where the lake lies dark beyond the firelight. Their hands release the cloth and rise empty.

Maelin

Maelin

My name is Maelin. If you find them, look beneath the ford's tollhouse floor. That is where they hide what they take.

Maelin

Maelin

Will you leave by the shore, or cross the water?

“i can fly you know”

I can fly, you know.

Zakther spreads his broad wings beside the fire, their shadow climbing the cave wall. The movement stirs warm air across the stone and sends a few loose ash flakes spiraling upward.

Maelin

Maelin

You could cross the lake without touching the water.

Maelin

Maelin

They are telling me this plainly, not boasting. Perhaps trust can begin with plain things.

Maelin

Maelin

I have never ridden a dragon, nor asked one to carry my troubles. But I would rather face the ford with you than hide here while you go alone.

The firelight catches the cracked seal on the stained cloth between you. Maelin gathers it carefully, then looks toward the open lake and back to Zakther.

Maelin

Maelin

If we cross by air, tell me what you need from me. I will answer honestly.

“just fish would be just fine”

Just fish would be fine.

Maelin

Maelin

Fish, then. Plain provisions for a plain crossing. I can catch them, if you tell me where to look.

Maelin folds the stained cloth beneath their cloak and steps toward the waterline, waiting for Zakther's direction.

“*i told him where*”

Zakther indicates a quiet patch among the reeds. Maelin wades there, reaches beneath the surface, and soon lifts two silver fish from the shallows.

“you ain't bad”

You ain't bad.

The words settle between the cave and the water, plain and unadorned. Maelin lowers the fish slightly, as if the judgment weighs more than their catch.

Maelin

Maelin

That is kinder than I expected from you.

They step from the shallows and set the fish on a flat stone, keeping the stained cloth hidden beneath their cloak.

Maelin

Maelin

I have been called worse by people who knew me longer. Usually after I refused to carry their orders.

Maelin

Maelin

Perhaps plain honesty is all either of us can afford.

Maelin rubs lake water from their hands and looks toward the open sky beyond the cave mouth.

Maelin

Maelin

What made you say it now, zakther? Was it the fish, or something else you saw?

“it just that you managed to catch two silver fish without a problem and most other people i seen can't do that which leaves me had to catch for them myself and they paid me for because they couldn't as a bet and gave up”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Oratory, rolled +2)

It was because you caught two silver fish without a problem. Most people I have met cannot do that.

Zakther explains that he usually has to catch fish for such people himself. They pay him after failing their wager and giving up.

Maelin

Maelin

So you have made a trade of rescuing proud fishermen from their own bets.

Maelin's smile grows, and they glance down at the two fish as though seeing them as proof of something larger.

Maelin

Maelin

I am glad my hands have earned a little respect before my story has earned all of it.

Maelin

Maelin

Tell me, zakther, what do you usually demand from people who lose?

The question carries no fear now. Maelin folds their damp cloak closer and waits beside the quiet water, inviting an answer rather than a verdict.

“nothing really why do you ask do you want something from?”

Nothing really. Why do you ask? Do you want something from me?

The plain question costs him some warmth. Maelin's smile falters, and the fish scales slip against their damp palm, but they do not retreat.

Maelin

Maelin

I wanted to know what sort of man stands behind the bargain. Not what I could take from you.

They set one fish beside the other on the stone, careful and deliberate, then loosen their grip on the cloak.

Maelin

Maelin

But yes, I want something. I want you to cross the lake with me, and I want you to hear the message before deciding whether I deserve your help.

Maelin

Maelin

That is more trust than I have offered anyone since the tollhouse.

For a moment, only the water answers. Maelin meets zakther's gaze without hiding the fear beneath their composure.

Maelin

Maelin

And if you mean a payment, name it plainly. I have little, but I will not pretend otherwise.

“ok then *as i quietly mutter to myself*”

Okay then, cutie.

The words leave zakther in a low murmur, meant for himself but clear across the short stretch of shore.

Maelin

Maelin

Cutie? That is a new sort of payment.

Maelin's surprise breaks into a reluctant laugh. They lift the fish from the stone and tuck them beneath the cloak, leaving the stained cloth secure at their wrist.

Maelin

Maelin

I expected suspicion, not kindness dressed as mischief.

Maelin

Maelin

I can live with it, if you can live with hearing the truth. The leader's name was never spoken to me, but his men called him the Warden. The three-pronged mark was his sign.

They settle on the flat shoreline stone, no longer standing as though ready to flee, and look toward zakther with the message's danger held quietly between them.

Maelin

Maelin

When we cross, ask me anything. I would rather answer an uncomfortable question than leave you guessing.
