Dylan passes beneath Kingstone’s ironbound gates into a capital strained to its seams. Veterans line the road beside beggars and peasants whose muttering nearly becomes revolt.

Dust hangs beneath the banners of the crown. Scarred soldiers watch the palace road, while hungry hands lift petitions, empty bowls, and clenched fists toward the passing court.

Theodosia Umberys

Theodosia Umberys

Dylan Cook. Kingstone remembers its absent son, though I suspect the city has changed more than you have.

Princess Theodosia stands at the head of a royal entourage, small and athletic beneath her riding cloak, warm brown skin stark against the dark fall of her tightly bound hair.

Theodosia Umberys

Theodosia Umberys

You are to come with us to the castle. My father expects your presence, and the streets are no place for old scandals to acquire new witnesses.

Behind her, mounted retainers shift in their saddles. Beyond them, a veteran calls for bread, and the crowd answers with a restless surge against the palaceward barricades.

Let him see what his return has found: a kingdom waiting for someone bold enough to claim it.

Dylan falls in beside Theodosia as the entourage turns toward the castle. He keeps his attention on the crowd, reading faces beneath the stirred dust and royal banners.

The people part grudgingly around the mounted retainers. Veterans lower their petitions, but their eyes follow Dylan and Theodosia with the hard patience of those who have waited too long.

Theodosia Umberys

Do not mistake silence for surrender. Kingstone has learned that shouting spends strength, while watching reveals where power truly stands.

A woman lifts an empty bowl toward the procession. Beside her, a scarred veteran catches Dylan's gaze, then points toward the palace with two fingers before disappearing into the press.

Theodosia Umberys

Theodosia Umberys

My father will ask what you intend to do with the kingdom's unrest. Choose your answer carefully, Dylan. He values boldness less than he claims.

The castle rises beyond the avenue, its pale towers bright above the crowded roofs. The gates open for Theodosia, and Dylan crosses beneath them at her side.

He watches the city instead of admiring the walls. Perhaps absence taught him something worth fearing.

How have you been, Theodosia?

Theodosia's stride falters for half a pace. The retainers continue ahead, but her attention turns fully toward him as the castle gates close behind them.

Theodosia Umberys

Theodosia Umberys

Alive, sharpened, and less patient than I was. Court has a way of polishing every wound until it resembles duty.

Her mouth forms a dry smile, though her eyes remain guarded. The avenue narrows between pale walls, muffling the city's unrest into a distant, restless murmur.

Theodosia Umberys

Theodosia Umberys

I have served my father, negotiated with men who mistake inheritance for wisdom, and watched Kingstone grow hungry beneath their certainty.

Theodosia Umberys

Theodosia Umberys

And you? Do not offer me a courtly answer, Dylan. I have heard enough of those to last several lifetimes.

Ahead, bronze doors open onto the castle's inner hall. A herald waits beneath the royal crest, visibly impatient, while Theodosia holds Dylan's gaze.

Tell her I return to Kingstone a new man far more powerful, and more sure of what I want as I slowly grasp her hand.

Dylan slowly reaches for Theodosia's hand and closes his fingers around it. She allows the contact, her guarded expression tightening as the herald waits beneath the royal crest.

Powerful men often announce themselves before the court has tested them. Certainty is rarer, and sometimes more dangerous.

Her thumb rests against his knuckles, neither retreating nor yielding. The castle hall seems to draw its breath around them, while distant voices echo beyond the bronze doors.

Theodosia Umberys

Tell me, then. What do you want, precisely? A place at my father's table, a crown's influence, or something you have never dared name aloud?

Theodosia Umberys

Choose your words with care. The king is waiting, and I will not let him mistake ambition for an empty performance.

I want you, and I want to aid your father to save his city until it is time for me to help you save it.

I want you, Theodosia. And I want to aid your father in saving this city, until the time comes for me to help you lead it.

For a moment, only the distant murmur of Kingstone reaches the hall. Theodosia's fingers remain around his, though her guarded composure gives way to something more searching.

Theodosia Umberys

Theodosia Umberys

You choose a perilous order of loyalties, Dylan. My father first, the city before ambition, and me waiting at the end of it.

The herald glances toward the bronze doors, then wisely says nothing. Beyond them, courtiers move beneath the royal crest while bells toll from the lower city.

Theodosia Umberys

I believe you mean it. That is precisely why the promise frightens me more than any polished deception would.

Then enter beside me and let the king hear your offer. Tell him what you can save, and what price you will refuse to pay.

She releases his hand only to turn toward the waiting doors, keeping her shoulder aligned with his as the herald raises the bar.

The herald lifts the bar, and the bronze doors swing inward. Dylan enters beside Theodosia beneath a vaulted ceiling painted with the victories of ancient kings.

A long crimson carpet leads toward the raised throne. Courtiers line the hall in measured silence, their jeweled sleeves and wary faces turned toward the returning bastard.

Theodosia Umberys

Stand with me, and let them see that your return is not a petition for mercy.

At the far end, the king sits beneath a carved crown of white stone. His counselors cluster behind him, while banners stir in the warm air above.

Dylan Cook. You come into my hall with my daughter at your side and the city unresting beyond my walls.

The herald bows and retreats. The great doors close behind Dylan and Theodosia, sealing out the muted bells and leaving the throne room wholly attentive.

Approach. I would hear what power you claim, what aid you offer, and why I should entrust either to you.

"Your grace I departed your city a weak and bitter boy, and return mightier than any in your realm. I offer you the services of a mage far outstripping that which has been seen in the last century. This court is a pit of vipers I spent my entire life preparing to de-fang."

His words carry beneath the vaulted ceiling. Several counselors stiffen, jeweled hands tightening at their sleeves, while Theodosia watches the throne without flinching.

You offer power and insult in the same breath. Yet the city requires power, and your contempt may prove useful if it is founded on truth.

The king rises from the white-stone throne. His gaze travels over Dylan, then settles on the assembled counselors as murmurs stir like snakes beneath fallen leaves.

I accept your service, Dylan Cook. You will advise me on the unrest before sunset, and you will name which vipers deserve your first attention.

Theodosia Umberys

Then let the court hear him plainly. If his magic is equal to his claim, hiding him behind ceremony would be an act of royal cowardice.

A gray-robed counselor steps from the line, face pale with controlled anger. The king raises one hand, granting Dylan the hall's full attention before the challenge begins.

Dylan lowers his lashes and releases a thread of thought, fine as spider silk, through the vaulted hall. It passes beneath courtiers’ practiced masks.

Fear, greed, and resentment answer him, but one mind strikes with deliberate poison: the gray-robed counselor has already decided Dylan must be ruined before sunset.

Let the bastard expose himself. If the king trusts him, the city’s panic will become his weapon, and his disgrace will follow.

A second impression clings to the royal seal, thin and foreign, listening through enchanted metal. Dylan finds its direction and recognizes the counselor’s careful attention upon it.

Your silence has weight, Dylan. You have found malice here, have you not? Speak before my court mistakes restraint for uncertainty.

Your Grace, the gray counselor plots treason against you. He wishes my death and means to perpetuate the unrest in your realm.

The accusation rings through the hall. Dylan’s thought-thread tightens toward the counselor, but the listening charm in the royal seal catches it and twists its force back upon him.

There, Majesty. He reaches for my mind even as he condemns me. His magic makes accusation indistinguishable from coercion.

A sharp pressure blooms behind Dylan’s eyes. Through the seal, every courtier glimpses fractured impressions of fear, ambition, and suspicion, stripped of their owners and arranged around Dylan’s presence.
