The cellar groans, the timber beams overhead splintering like dry bones under the weight of the collapsed street above. Dust chokes the air, turning the filtered light into a suffocating, grey shroud.

Caleb
Must... get to the cellar stairs... crawl, even if the world ends.
Caleb stirs amidst the wreckage, his eyes wide and unfocused as he drags his body across the jagged floorboards, desperate to escape the impending tomb.

Doc Holliday
The girl is slinking away, and the fool is waking up to his own demise. I cannot hold the roof and the rot both.
Doc Holliday towers over the debris, his massive frame shivering as the ceiling bows downward. He glances from the wounded, retreating figure of Elspeth to the man struggling beneath his boots.

Doc Holliday
Make your choice, John Henry. A life for a soul.

Escape the collapsing cellar
“Is caleb critical to the story?”
YES (Likely, rolled 17)

As Caleb drags himself forward, a heavy, leather-bound journal slips from his coat, sliding across the floorboards to rest against Doc Holliday's massive boot. The Spectral Saloon Madam drifts closer, her translucent hand pointing toward the book, her eyes burning with a silent, desperate urgency that marks the man as the key to the cellar's dark secret.

Doc Holliday
This wretch is no mere casualty of the collapse; he is the anchor for whatever nightmare is buried beneath these floorboards.
“Doc grabs caleb and hauls him out”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

Doc grips Caleb under the arms and hauls. The man comes up coughing dust, boots scraping furrows in the cellar muck.

Caleb
Easy... easy, I can move. Just... don’t let me go.
A beam cracks overhead like a rifle shot. Powdery dirt rains down as Doc drags Caleb toward the opening.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Leave the ledger, gunslinger. The book is bait, and the thing below it is hungry.
Elder Elspeth backs toward the far wall, clutching the journal to her chest. Her eyes flick from Doc to the sagging ceiling, calculating.

Elder Elspeth
If you mean to live, choose quickly. I can hold this side a moment longer... or I can run.
The floor shudders again. Splinters skitter past Doc's boots, and the dark seam in the boards yawns wider, waiting.
“I haul Caleb through the opening”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Doc heaves Caleb through the split in the floorboards, and the man vanishes into the black below with a choking yelp. Dust bursts up around the opening as the cellar groans hard enough to shake the boots off balance.

Caleb
I am down, I am down, get through while it holds!
Doc drops after him without hesitation, Grief angled across his chest. He lands in a cramped crawlspace under the cellar, wood above him cracking like tinder.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Good. Keep moving, gunslinger. The jaw is opening behind you.
A fresh splintering rattle runs through the beams overhead, and a burst of dirt pours through the seam. One loose board tumbles into the dark passage and disappears.

Elder Elspeth
That way, then. If you mean to live, follow the low tunnel, not the room above.
Ahead, the crawlspace splits into two shadowy cuts, one slanting toward cold air, the other clogged with fallen timber. Caleb coughs in the dark and points with shaking fingers, waiting on Doc to choose.
“I take the clearer tunnel”
FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled -2)

Doc lunges for the clearer tunnel, boots skidding in loose dirt.
The crawlspace floor gives an ugly little slough, and his weight drives him sideways into the wall instead of through the opening.
Timbers scrape down ahead, pinching the easy path until it is no longer easy, just a narrowing throat of splinters and grit.

Caleb
That one is closing! The other way, Doc, the other way!

Spectral Saloon Madam
Too late for straight lines. The cellar is choosing for you.
Dust boils across Grief as Doc braces hard, but the tunnel mouth chokes with fresh collapse and forces a new choice on him.
“I take the other way”
SUCCESS (Poor Agility, rolled +2)
Doc throws his weight into the other tunnel and the crawlspace answers with a gritty shove. Loose boards bite and give, but the opening holds long enough for him to wrench through.
He comes out on the far side shoulder first, Grief tucked tight, dirt raining off his coat in clumps. The blocked branch coughs behind him as the ceiling keeps shedding dust.
Ahead, the second tunnel runs lower and straighter than the first, with a seam of faint daylight or lampglow leaking through packed earth at its end.

Caleb
You made it. Keep moving, before the floor decides again.

Spectral Saloon Madam
That way. The hungry thing likes hesitation more than prey.
The dust thins just enough to show a dropped leather journal half-buried beside the new tunnel wall, its cover smeared with grit and drawn almost to Doc's boot.
Somewhere overhead, timber pops like a rifle shot, and the passage ahead waits on him in a cold, tight hush.

“I keep moving down the tunnel”
SUCCESS (Legendary Health, rolled +1)

Doc keeps driving forward, shoulder low, Grief tight to his chest. The tunnel swallows him in grit and dimness, then opens a handspan wider where the floor dips away beneath his boots.
The journal shifts under the draft from ahead, sliding free of the dirt. Its cover catches the thin light leaking through the far end, dark leather flashing once like a signal.

Caleb
Take it. If that thing finds it first, we are done for.

Spectral Saloon Madam
The tunnel is talking now. Hear it. Something below is breathing through the soil.
Doc’s boots hit firmer ground. The passage ahead is open, low, and clear enough to crawl, with pale light pooling over the dirt like a promise from outside.
Behind him, Caleb scrapes after in a panic, and the Madam’s shadow stretches long against the wall as the ceiling gives another dry crack overhead.
The journal lies within reach, half-buried but free, while the way forward waits in that thin glow. One more push, and something above shudders hard enough to spill dust in a sheet.
“I grab the leather journal”
FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled -2)
Doc snatches for the journal. His fingers catch only a corner of leather, and the book skids farther down the dirt in a scrape of grit.
The floor buckles under the jolt. The journal tips into a shallow crack, half-swallowed, its spine now wedged out of easy reach.

Caleb
No, no, no, leave it, the tunnel is giving way!

Spectral Saloon Madam
Too late for tidy hands. The thing below has scented the book.
Dust pours from the ceiling in a gray curtain. The pale light ahead brightens, but the crawlspace itself narrows as the dirt shifts and settles.
Doc’s reach comes up empty, and the only clean path is the low opening ahead, not the journal now trapped in the seam behind his hand.

Caleb
Doc, move, or it buries us with it?
“I back away from the sinking floor”
SUCCESS (Poor Agility, rolled +4)
Doc shifts his weight back, boots scraping for purchase as the floor keeps sagging under the crack. The dirt gives way behind him, but his retreat is sure.
He clears the soft edge of the sink and plants himself on firmer ground, the journal left wedged in the seam where it vanishes under falling grit.

Caleb
That’s it, keep coming. Don’t stop now.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Good. The hole wants what you hesitate over.
A heavier shudder runs through the crawlspace. Dust spills from the ceiling in a choking sheet, and the low opening ahead throws pale light across the narrowing tunnel.
The seam is widening behind him.
Caleb twists toward the light, one hand raised to shield his face, while the Madam points hard at the passage and the dark beyond it. Something under the earth answers with a deep, wet creak.

“I head for the lighted passage”
SUCCESS (Poor Agility, rolled -2)

Doc turns into the pale spill of the passage and commits his weight to it. The crawlspace narrows around his shoulders, dust rasping off the boards above him.
Behind him, the widening seam coughs dirt into the dark. Ahead, the light holds steady, hard and ghostly, just enough to show the tunnel bending low.

Doc Holliday
The opening is clear.

Caleb
This way, this way, move.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Go on. The hungry thing is behind the wrong man now.
Doc reaches the lit passage and plants himself under the brighter wash, the darkness of the cellar cut off at his back.
The floor seam groans once more, and something below it answers with a slow, wet scrape.
“I push deeper into the lighted passage”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Doc drives forward into the pale passage, shoulder first, Grief tucked tight as he clears the choke point.
The tunnel yields at once, and the light spills over him, washing the crawlspace behind into a dirty shadow.

Caleb
He made it. Keep moving, sir, keep moving.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Yes. Leave the hunger to the dark.
Behind them, the seam in the floor splits wider with a dry crack, then a low, hungry scrape answers from underneath.
Doc is through. The passage opens ahead in a narrow run of light, while the collapsing cellar falls away behind him.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Now decide, gunslinger, do you press on, or turn back for the thing that heard you?
“I keep moving down the passage”
SUCCESS (Legendary Health, rolled +1)

Doc keeps driving down the passage, boots grinding over loose dirt. The light ahead steadies into a thin, pale run, and the tunnel stops fighting him.
The crawlspace behind drops away from view, left in a jagged spill of shadow and dust. The scraping below the seam fades under the tunnel's narrow hush.

Caleb
That's it, sir. That is it. We are out of the cellar.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Not cleanly. But for this breath, yes.
A draft brushes Doc's face, carrying cool night air and the sting of old plaster. The passage opens enough to show a sliver of freedom ahead.
Behind him, the floor seam gives one last shudder. Dust rains down in a thin curtain, and the dark beneath it still listens.
“I push out of the tunnel”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +2)

Doc drives forward and the tunnel gives up at last. Night air hits him full in the chest, cold and real, as his boots break through onto open ground.
Behind him, the cellar throat caves in with a muffled grunt. Dirt slumps across the opening, and the black seam disappears under a fresh spill of earth.

Caleb
Out, out, we are out. I can feel my legs again.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Then do not linger at the lip of it. Something down there notices loss.
A thin crescent of moon shows over the yard, silvering Doc's lance and the dust on his coat. The tunnel behind him is now a buried mouth, still settling.
Caleb stares back at the sealed hole, then at Doc, panic easing into raw relief. The Madam's shape wavers beside the opening, one hand fixed on the dark.

Spectral Saloon Madam
Move, gunslinger. The night is open, but it is not empty.
