Mira and the caravan guard follow Stryker through the opening, while the five armed travelers remain beyond the stones. Pale roots suddenly knot across the steps behind them, sealing the threshold without striking anyone.
The sealed artifact bucks once against Stryker’s arms. Its pulse is deeper than before, and a muffled voice answers from beneath the shrine floor, blurred by stone and roots.

Edris Vale
That is no summons from the shrine. Something buried below has heard the relic awaken.
The pale shape of Edris turns sharply toward the worn steps. Blue motes stream from his outline and sink between the cracks as the hidden voice murmurs again.

Edris Vale
The buried ward is not failing quietly. Bearer, do not set the artifact down until we know what it has called.
Behind the root seal, the five travelers cluster uneasily with weapons lowered. The caravan guard watches them through the lattice, while Mira steps nearer to Stryker and listens for another answer below.

Mira Pell
Then the shrine is not the only thing waiting for us.

I move to enter the shrine carrying the sealed artifact
“"watch your backs"”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Stryker
Watch your backs.
Stryker keeps the sealed artifact close and advances down the worn steps. Behind him, Mira turns toward the root-sealed threshold while the caravan guard scans the darkened shrine walls.

Mira Pell
I am watching the threshold. Nothing crosses behind us unnoticed.

The Caravan Guard
And I will watch the travelers. Keep moving, elf. The shrine has heard you clearly.
The five armed travelers tighten their formation beyond the roots, facing outward with lowered blades. Inside, blue motes drift along the walls as Stryker reaches the shrine’s shadowed entrance.

Edris Vale
Vigil suits a bearer of restoration. Proceed without breaking the seal, and the ward will recognize your caution.
Stryker enters the shrine carrying the artifact. The buried murmur fades to a low vibration, while the unseen voice’s pale motes gather above the descending passage and Mira and the caravan guard hold their watch.
Director's note
I descend toward the shrine's heart

The worn steps descend beneath the shrine, narrowing between walls veined with pale roots. Blue motes cling to Stryker’s path, revealing old elven carvings beneath layers of dust.

Mira Pell
The carvings are warding marks. They point downward, but some have been scratched away.
Mira keeps close behind Stryker, one hand near the knife she borrowed from a traveler. Above, the caravan guard’s silhouette remains at the entrance while the root-sealed passage holds.

Edris Vale
The shrine’s heart lies below. The damaged marks belong to the first breach, when the relic was forced from its resting place.
The buried vibration strengthens as Stryker descends. At the stair’s end, a circular chamber opens around a sunken stone altar, its empty socket glowing with restrained blue fire.

Mira Pell
There. That socket is waiting for the artifact. But the fire is moving beneath it.
Roots flex beneath the altar without breaking the stone. The sealed bundle answers with one heavy pulse, and Edris’s motes gather in a ring around the chamber’s waiting center.

“I attempt to use a clairvoyance spell to determine what the ward called apon”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +0)

Stryker focuses through the sealed bundle’s cold pulse and opens his sight beyond ordinary distance. The altar, roots, and stone fall away into a vast chamber beneath the shrine.
Clairvoyant vision reveals a young adult elf man bound within the roots below, his narrow face framed by long white hair and a jagged scar crossing his left brow, lean and ash-pale, wearing fractured ceremonial robes. Blue fire burns where his heart should be.

Aren Thal
I am Aren Thal, the shrine’s buried sentinel. The awakened relic called me from my binding.
The vision widens. Around Aren, blackened roots coil through broken ward-stones, while a second presence presses against them from deeper darkness, vast but still contained.

Mira Pell
A sentinel, not the ward itself. Then what is pressing against him?

Edris Vale
The first breach left a hunger beneath the shrine. Aren was bound there to keep it from reaching the surface.
The clairvoyant image collapses back into the altar chamber, leaving Stryker with certainty: the relic called Aren Thal, whose failing binding restrains the buried hunger below.

“I place the artifact back in its rightful place, in an attempt to stabilize, and strengthen aren thal's binding”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled -1)

Stryker lowers the sealed artifact into the altar’s empty socket. The stone accepts it at once, and blue fire spreads through the carved channels beneath his hands.
The relic’s cold pulse deepens into a steady harmony. Far below, the roots draw tight around Aren’s binding, while the blackened coils retreat from the restored ward-stones.

Aren Thal
Bearer, your act renews the seal. I can hold the hunger beneath us again, but the first breach remains within these stones.
Aren’s blue heart-fire steadies in the clairvoyant depth. The vast pressure below sinks away from him, contained beneath layers of newly awakened wards.

Mira Pell
The marks are brightening. Whatever was broken here is bound again, at least for now.

Edris Vale
Restoration has answered restoration. The shrine recognizes your purpose, Stryker, and Aren’s binding will endure.
The altar settles into silence, no longer empty. Blue light rises through the chamber and reveals a narrow stair descending beyond it, toward the place where the buried hunger waits contained.
