Mutt stayed behind at the Rabid Dogs safehouse to monitor the burned relay. Jackal reached the secure access point alone, beneath East city’s dead infrastructure, with the route glowing inside his deck.

The secure door remains shut, its corroded frame threaded with dormant indicator strips. Across Jackal’s display, an authentication string assembles itself from neural access patterns unmistakably his own.

The Shadow appears only in the deck’s reflection, a slim obsidian silhouette edged with faint electric-blue highlights. Its reflected face remains fixed on the sealed door.

Behind the barrier, old machinery wakes in measured stages. Relays clack, buried motors shudder, and a startup sequence clocks through the dark without any signal reaching the outside.

A heavy lock disengages somewhere below. Concrete grinds against concrete as a sealed lower passage unlocks by itself, while the main door remains closed and the deck’s string continues to pulse.

Jackal steps through the unlocked lower passage. The pulsing authentication string tightens across his deck, each neural flare answering the corridor’s buried sensors as he keeps it under control.

The passage slopes beneath the sealed door into a service artery lined with dead conduits. Blue status lights kindle behind him, recording his entry without raising an alarm.

The authentication string bucks against Jackal’s concentration, trying to split into competing commands. He forces it back into one clean pulse and reaches the passage’s first junction.

The effort leaves a hard blankness behind his eyes. For one measured breath, his hand pauses over the junction controls before his will closes around the hesitation and moves again.

The pulsing string remains stable under Jackal’s control as he enters the lower facility proper. Ahead, dormant panels wake in sequence, exposing a dark route deeper beneath East city.
