The hidden door jolts under a brutal удар, dust sifting from the bookcases. The Archivist goes still with her hand over the map. The Skeletal Remnant folds into the shadowed corner. Frecal has barely a breath before the captain's voice crashes through the wood.

The City Guard Captain
Open up in the name of the magisters. I know someone is hiding in there.
The Archivist gathers herself, eyes cutting to Frecal and the others. Beside the desk, the scroll's blue glow steadies over the map and iron key. A small movement from the alcove shelf stirs a hooded figure in faded gray, silent until now, who straightens from behind a stack of ledgers.

The Clerk
If you mean to lie, do it with less noise. The captain has two guards with him, maybe three.

The Archivist
Clerk, now is not the moment for counting.
The new arrival, a thin clerk with ink on his cuffs and worry in every line of his face, edges closer to the desk. Outside, boots shift. The captain hammers the door again, harder this time, and the latch shudders in its frame.

The City Guard Captain
Last warning. Open, or I break it and search the room myself.
“Ask the archivist to stall them while whispering to the clerk quietly if there is a way out that would avoid the watch”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)

Frecal lowers his voice and turns the crisis into a whisper. He asks the Archivist to stall the guards, while he leans toward the clerk for a quiet way out that avoids the watch.

The Archivist
Three breaths, then I will answer their hammering with words. That is all I can promise.

The Clerk
There is a service stair behind the ledgers. Narrow, dusty, and old, but it opens into the alley by the scribe yard.

The Clerk
He glances at the map, then at Frecal. If the key turns the east latch, the stair should be clear.

The Archivist
If the captain forces me to bluff, I will do it. But if you mean to vanish, do it now.
The clerk slides the iron key a finger's width closer to Frecal, not as a gift, more as a decision. The blue glow over the scroll steadies, and for a heartbeat the alcove feels less like a trap and more like a shared secret.
“Ask the archivist to join us at the 4th way after distracting the guard when she feels it's safe. Tell the other 2 let's. Make way through the service stairway and make our way to the meeting spot”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled -1)

Frecal takes the key and gives the plan in a hush: the archivist goes with them to the fourth way, but only after she has thrown the captain off his trail. The clerk nods once, already moving toward the ledgers.

The Archivist
I will meet you there. If I survive the captain's temper, I will bring the map and the key.

The Clerk
Then the stair is yours. East latch first, pull hard, and do not stop in the scribe yard.
The archivist folds the scroll shut, tucks the map against her ribs, and turns toward the hidden door with her chin high. Behind her, the clerk parts the packed shelves just enough to reveal a narrow gap of black stone and old dust.

The Skeletal Remnant
A practical bargain. Good. Promises held at the edge of danger tend to keep their shape.
Frecal leads the way into the service stair, the iron key warm in his palm. The passage pinches tight around shoulders and elbows, then opens to a slant of alley-light below.
From behind them, the archivist's voice rises at the secret door, calm and sharp, ready to meet the captain. Ahead, the stair drops toward the scribe yard and the fourth way waits beyond the shadows.
“Make our way to the 44th way and await the archivist”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -2)
