Green Lady moss hangs thick over the shrine stones, damp and dark as old felt. Sister Bryn Vhalen steps in under the boughs, censer smoke clinging to her braids, and finds a village blacksmith already waiting at the altar niche.

The blacksmith is broad in the shoulders, ash on his sleeves, and he holds a split horseshoe like it is a holy thing. A coil of red thread lies at his feet, knotted in a pattern of warding that looks half prayer, half panic.

Not a fever dream, then. Good. Bad, but good.

At the shrine base, a little bundle of birch bark and wool stirs once, though there is no wind. From inside it comes a muffled thump, then silence.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

Sister, praise Solenne you came. My lad is in there, or something wearing my lad's shape. I heard the omen at dusk, the birds all faced west, and then he ran for the old roots.

The bark bundle is moving. The smell of iron on the air is fresh.

He lifts the horseshoe with shaking hands, eyes fixed on the moss-dark opening beneath the shrine stones. Beyond it, a narrow root passage drops into black earth, and something down there breathes once, slow and wet.

If you are with the hearth gods, tell me now. Do I tear the roots open, or do I let whatever has him keep tugging him deeper?

“I ask the blacksmith what changed his lad”

SUCCESS (Good Diplomacy, rolled -2)

The blacksmith swallows, then looks from Bryn to the root-dark opening. His grip tightens on the edge of his apron.

The Village Blacksmith

He started with little things. Waking with bark in his hair. Dreaming in the old tongue of trees. Then he walked into the wood and came back with sap on his hands.

Bryn’s question hangs between them while the shrine’s roots creak softly overhead.

At first, I thought he’d only been marked. Then he began answering when the birds called, like he knew their meaning.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

Not a man anymore, not fully. I can still hear my boy in there, if I listen hard enough.

You need to know the rest, priestess. Do you want the tale from the beginning, or the part where he vanished into the roots?

Bryn asks, and the blacksmith swallows hard. He points with a shaking hand toward the shrine steps, then farther down, into the root-dark below.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

At the threshold. He was laughing at the birds, then he touched the roots and they took him, all at once.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

I should have dragged him back sooner.

The bark bundle gives a slow, dragging shudder. A strip of wool slips aside, and something pale and boy-shaped shows beneath the roots.

At the threshold.

The blacksmith steps closer to Bryn, desperate now, but he does not reach for the bundle. His fear has turned to trust, thin as a thread.

The Village Blacksmith

If you can bring him out, I will owe you more than coin. I swear it on my hammer.

From the opening below, wet breathing answers, slow and deep, as if something under the shrine is listening to its own name.

“I descend into the root passage”

Bryn takes the first step down and the shrine’s moss-dark edge gives way under her boot, then holds. Roots arch overhead like ribs, and the air below turns cool and wet.

She lowers herself into the passage, one hand on stone, one on her hammer. The opening swallows her shoulders, then her back, until the shrine light trims only her braids and talisman.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

Please... bring my son back.

Behind her, the blacksmith stays at the threshold, not following. The bark bundle gives another slow shudder above the roots, but Bryn is already below it now.

The passage opens just enough for her to stand. Mud slicks the floor, and the breathing beneath the shrine seems to come from everywhere at once.

Ahead, pale root-fibers part around a small shape on the ground, still and half-hidden. Something in the dark shifts at the same time, as if it knows she has arrived.

“I move toward the small shape”

Bryn advances through the mud toward the small shape. The passage narrows beneath her boots, and pale roots flex down from the ceiling like waiting fingers.

Her shoulder brushes the roots. They tighten at once, not striking, but closing the space around her until the half-hidden form lies just beyond reach.

The roots are guarding the shape, not merely hiding it.

Bryn shifts her weight to pass beneath the arch, but the mud gives way. She catches herself against the stone as her hand slips from the root-fiber.

The small shape rolls slightly in the disturbed mud. A pale cheek and one closed eye show beneath the bark, while the roots draw the bundle deeper into their woven hollow.

Her stumble opens a thin crack beside the passage wall. Beyond it, faint green light reveals a second route curling around the root mass, wide enough for a careful crawl.

“Are the roots protecting the blacksmith’s son?”

YES (Likely, rolled 32)

The green light steadies beyond the crack. In it, the roots around the bark bundle are no longer reaching inward like snares; they are woven beneath the small body, bearing its weight and shielding its head from the mud.

A root curls over the pale cheek without touching it. Another presses against the passage wall, braced between the child and the dark beyond, where the wet breathing has fallen silent.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

You hear him, don't you? The roots have not taken him. They are keeping something else from him.

The bundle gives a faint, uneven breath. Beneath the bark, the boy's fingers twitch once, and the roots answer by tightening their shelter around his shoulders.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

They know he is hurt. They know what follows the old tongue.

From the hollow comes a muted scrape, then a low murmur in the old tongue of trees. The roots do not recoil. They fold closer, guarding the boy as something unseen shifts outside their woven wall.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

Then bring him through gently, Sister. Whatever marked him, the wood is trying to keep him alive.

“I gently free the boy from the roots”

Bryn slides her fingers between the living roots and the bark, easing each loop loose instead of pulling. The shelter yields around the boy with a soft wooden sigh.

A root catches her palm as it withdraws, scraping a bright line across the skin. She keeps her grip gentle, though mud steals her footing and bruises her knee against the stone.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

Easy, lad. Easy. She has you now.

The last root slips from beneath the boy's shoulders. Bryn gathers him free, bark and wool cradled against her, while the green-lit fibers fold back toward the dark.

He is limp but breathing, his cheek cold against Bryn's arm. A faint smear of sap marks his hair, and his fingers curl weakly into her vestment.

The Village Blacksmith

The Village Blacksmith

You brought him out. Solenne keep you, Sister. What did the roots do to him?

Behind the boy, the roots seal the hollow again. Beyond them, something shifts in the unseen dark, but the breathing remains silent.
