The pried floorboards gape like broken teeth. Beneath them, the foundation has folded into a narrow passage, its darkness threaded with red light and drifting motes of blue-white energy.

The rift is not closed. It is pointing somewhere.

The Isoptera Diplomat

The Isoptera Diplomat

No. It is remembering a passage. Something crossed through recently.

A pulse rolls up from below. For one breath, the damp air carries familiar voices through the stone, blurred by distance and distortion.

One voice cries out, then another answers. The sound is unmistakable in its pattern, a younger sibling calling from the far side of a storm.

The trail leads toward the old road beneath Grim Port. If your family passed through the tears, this is the first true sign of them.

The red thread strains toward the opening. Below, the cramped passage shudders, revealing a glimmer of distant daylight before the darkness folds shut again.

Beatrix Galveston wedges a loose plank across the opening and drives a broken brace beneath it, trying to spread the weight over the torn floor.

The brace bites into the shifting foundation, but the stone beneath rolls. The plank slips, dropping hard enough to shake dust from the rafters.

The Ramadi Scout

The Ramadi Scout

Stop. The stones are moving in a pattern.

The failed support leaves the opening wider, yet the falling brace exposes a row of old foundation sockets beneath the passage lip.

The Isoptera Diplomat

The Isoptera Diplomat

Those sockets once held anchor-stakes. The original builders made this passage stable from above.

One socket still contains a splinter of blackened wood, etched with the same red geometry as the thread. The floor gives another slow, grinding shift around it.

The Ramadi Scout

The Ramadi Scout

The brace will not hold. We can use that socket, or descend before the foundation shifts again.

Use the exposed anchor socket to secure the foundation

Beatrix Galveston plants her quarterstaff against the foundation stone and drives the blackened splinter fully into its socket.

Her strength forces the stone down and locks the red-etched wood in place. The floor settles with a deep wooden groan.

The Ramadi Scout

Hold it there. The weight is spreading through the old anchors.

The cracks stop widening. Dust drifts from the rafters, then fades as the foundation finds a solid brace beneath the passage.

The Isoptera Diplomat

Secure. The inn will stand.

With the floor no longer shifting, the red-lit passage lies open below. Blue-white motes gather around a line of fresh footprints leading toward the old road beneath Grim Port.

The foundation is safe. Those tracks are not old. Do we follow them below?
