Night settles over the hamlet, turning the well and crooked roofs black against the last violet sky. Brannik remains beside Flerpy, while the townsfolk linger in a wary half-circle.
An old woman steps from the crowd carrying a bundle of thorn branches beneath one arm and a cracked bronze bowl in both hands. Her narrow face is wind-browned, her white hair braided with strips of dark cloth, and a patched gray cloak hangs sharply from her thin frame.

The Old Woman
That powder is no hedge wizard's trick. It is an old creature's inheritance, passed from dying hands to hands foolish enough to bear it.
She places the bowl on the well-stone. A few black thorns spill across its cracked bronze rim, and the amber residue clinging to the stones dims as though listening.

The Scarred Leader
You know this magic, then. Tell us where the defiler began, and we will put an end to the trail.

The Old Woman
I know where corruption first touched the land. I know what still crawls beneath that wound. But knowledge is not charity.

The Old Woman
Ask me one question, little champion. Then perhaps I will name my price.

“What end does the evil defiler seek? What happens when innocent magic creatures are killed?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Oratory, rolled +1)

Flerpy Dingflap
What end does the evil defiler seek, and what happens when innocent magic creatures are killed?
Flerpy’s sorcery-mark prickles beneath his skin. The old woman’s bowl blackens toward him, making the townsfolk murmur, yet one amber spark slips free and lands upon a thorn shaped like a claw.

The Old Woman
The defiler seeks the Deep Root, the buried spring from which old magic rises. He means to chain it, drink its strength, and make the land obey his hand.
The claw-thorn splits along its veins, revealing a thread of gold beneath the bark. Flerpy’s lucky spark exposes the truth his marked presence nearly concealed.

The Old Woman
When an innocent creature dies, its living spark does not pass onward. The defiler catches it, and each stolen spark becomes a chain around the Deep Root.

The Scarred Leader
Then every murder strengthens his prison, and the land itself will become his weapon.

The Old Woman
Yes. Now you know the end he seeks, and the price paid whenever the innocent fall. My answer is given, little champion.
“use my magic powder on the exposed root”
SUCCESS (Poor Willpower, rolled +4)

Flerpy opens the large pouch and pours its amber powder over the exposed root. The marked skin beneath his sleeve prickles sharply, making the stream writhe toward the corruption instead of the living gold.
For one breath, the powder clings uselessly to the blackened veins. Then a stray spark leaps from the pouch, guided by Flerpy’s impossible luck, and lands precisely where the corruption knots deepest.
The root drinks the powder. Blackness peels away in silent ribbons, while gold races through the exposed wood and drives the corruption into the cracked bronze bowl.

The Old Woman
You carry a stain that should reject the old magic, yet the pouch turns that stain into a key. The wound is cleansed, little champion.
The bowl splits with a dull chime. Beneath the root, a narrow stairway appears, descending through the earth toward a faint golden glow.

The Scarred Leader
A passage beneath the hamlet. The old road led nowhere near this place, but the root has opened what the defiler concealed.

The Old Woman
The Deep Root is not beyond you now. This stair reaches its outer chamber, and the cleansed root will hide your coming from the defiler’s sight.
