The stair descends beneath the Refuge of Nine Bells, opening into a vast crypt where nine silent bells hang above a floor of black stone. Each bell is cast in a different metal, from dull iron to pale moon-silver.

The fugitive and the elderly witness follow close behind Sir Thickrod, leaving the open archive and its ancient shelves above. The silver map’s blue radiance spills down the steps, illuminating dust that has never known a living foot.

The light settles upon a bell of dark silver. Caelan Aster’s sigil is engraved beneath its rim, and the mark answers with a faint pulse that echoes through the crypt.

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

That is the heir’s bell. The Refuge remembers his blood, and it will ask whether yours carries the same right.

As Sir Thickrod approaches, silver lines awaken across the floor and curl around his boots. The wards draw a thin red gleam from his skin without breaking it, waiting for his blood to answer again.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

The passage opened for you once. Do not assume the second threshold will be as merciful.

Far below the bells, stone groans against stone. The sound swells through the crypt like something enormous turning in its sleep, while every silent bell trembles without ringing.

Sir Thickrod presses his blood to the dark-silver bell. The red gleam sinks into Caelan Aster’s sigil, and the metal answers with a single clear note.

Light races through the crypt floor. Nine rings of silver fire unfold beneath the bells, then withdraw as a stairway opens in the black stone beyond the heir’s bell.

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

The Refuge accepts you. The elder road lies open, and the heir’s blood has named you its keeper.

The Fugitive

Then we move. Whatever waits beneath this place, it is better faced below than with hunters at our backs.

The nine bells settle into silence. Beyond them, the opened stair descends through blue-lit stone, carrying a breath of deep earth and distant rain.

The fugitive gathers the silver map while the elderly witness steps toward the threshold. The passage stands fully unlocked, its ancient wards dark and harmless.

“Move the group as stealthily as possible and descend the opened stair”

Sir Thickrod lowers his center of gravity and leads the descent, placing each foot on the stair’s blue-lit edges. The fugitive follows in his shadow, while the elderly witness gathers her robes and moves with careful silence.

The opened stair carries them beneath the bells without a spoken word. Sir Thickrod’s arcane awareness dulls the shimmer of their movement, and the dark stone swallows the soft scrape of their boots.

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

Slowly. The old roads remember footsteps, even when the living do not.

They descend together, keeping close to the wall where the blue radiance is weakest. Behind them, the silver map’s glow fades until the stair mouth becomes only a dark seam beneath the silent bells.

At the final turn, the elderly witness’s staff touches one uneven step and gives a small click. The sound travels upward through the stair, a clear trace of their passage, but no voice answers from above.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

We are below the threshold now. Keep moving before that echo teaches anyone the way.

Sir Thickrod brings the group down into a low antechamber beneath the Refuge. The opened stair remains behind them, and the three stand concealed from the crypt above as distant rain murmurs through the stone.

Sir Thickrod draws the antechamber’s blue light into the cracks between its stones. Shadow folds around the three travelers, swallowing their outlines and muffling the last echo of the stair.

The fugitive freezes beside a low pillar, and the elderly witness lowers her staff without letting its ferrule touch the floor. Even their breathing seems to settle beneath the ward.

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

Good. Let the stone forget us before the road remembers where we entered.

Sir Thickrod’s concealment takes hold completely. The stair’s returning murmur passes over the antechamber, but finds no footsteps, warmth, or disturbed dust to carry upward.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

Clean work. No hunter above will know we came down this way.

With danger screened from the stair, the chamber reveals its other secret: a waist-high stone door set into the far wall, its surface carved with nine shallow bells.

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

Another threshold. The Refuge has not finished asking what the heir’s blood entrusted to you.

Beneath the carvings, a narrow seam glows with the same silver-blue light as the opened stair, waiting in the silence while the hidden passage remains secure behind them.

“I press my blood to the stone door”

Sir Thickrod presses his blood to the stone door. The red gleam enters the carved bells, but instead of opening, it stops at the ninth mark and fractures into silver lines.

The door remains sealed. A low chime passes through the antechamber, and one narrow panel beside the threshold shifts outward, revealing a recessed stone handprint beneath the words: SPEAK WHAT THE HEIR LEFT UNSAID.

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

It does not deny your blood. It denies that blood alone is the key. The heir left a word, a vow, or a truth within this refuge.

The Fugitive

Then the door has given us a way forward. Search the recess, Sir Thickrod. Whatever it wants, it has placed within reach.

The fractured light withdraws from the sealed bells and gathers inside the exposed handprint. Beneath its rim, a fresh line of script appears, incomplete but legible: I ABANDONED THE CROWN BECAUSE...

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

There. The testimony continues here. Complete the heir’s truth, and the Refuge may judge you by understanding rather than inheritance.

Retrieve the Star-Sundered Crown

“Can I sense Caelan's memory within the glowing handprint?”

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 20)

The glowing handprint answers without being touched. Its silver light deepens, and a second presence unfolds within it: not a voice preserved in ink, but the living shape of Caelan Aster’s memory, carrying the weight of his final confession.

Caelan Aster

Caelan Aster

I abandoned the Crown because it had begun to answer something beneath the kingdom. Each time I carried it closer to the deep road, another voice entered my dreams.

The handprint shows fragments rather than a complete scene: Caelan descending alone, the Star-Sundered Crown wrapped in torn royal cloth, and a darkness below the Refuge opening like an eye.

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

A voice beneath the kingdom. Then the Crown was not merely stolen from him. He feared what it would awaken.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

And he hid it here, or carried it farther down. The memory should tell us which, if the Refuge is willing to show the rest.

Silver script crawls beneath the unfinished sentence, guided by the memory’s pressure. New words appear one by one: I LEFT IT WHERE THE FIRST BELL CANNOT RING.

Caelan Aster

Caelan Aster

Find the bell without a tongue. Beneath it lies the Crown, and beneath the Crown, the thing I could not kill.

“Is the tongueless bell among the nine above?”

YES, BUT (Unlikely, rolled 33)

The handprint’s silver light climbs through the stone, reaching the nine bells far above. One answers with a hollow tremor, though no metal tongue hangs within it.

Caelan Aster

Caelan Aster

Yes. The tongueless bell hangs among the nine above. But its silence is not emptiness. Something took its voice and learned to listen through it.

The memory shudders. For an instant, Caelan’s face turns toward the darkness beneath the Refuge, and a thin black line appears across the silver handprint like a closing eye.

The Elderly Witness

The Elderly Witness

Then the bell is above us, but the thing beneath it already knows we have found the answer. The Refuge has traded certainty for notice.

The Fugitive

The Fugitive

A bell without a tongue cannot ring. If something listens through it, perhaps it can hear only what the Refuge permits.

The script completes itself beneath Caelan’s confession: RETURN TO THE FIRST CHAMBER. The path upward brightens, but below the handprint, a second pulse answers from deep stone.

Caelan Aster

Caelan Aster

Do not let the tongueless bell hear the Crown’s name. It will call the sleeper beneath it, and then the road will open both ways.

The handprint dims, leaving the upward route established and the warning fixed: the bell is above, but their discovery has awakened an unseen listener below.
