The demon’s presence stirs beneath Talos’s skin, guiding dark warmth through his arms and into his father’s old blade. The steel hums without leaving its sheath.

Power answers need, not anger. Reach for the life within a fallen ally, and pull them back before the last breath fades.

Talos

The blade feels warm, though the cave air is cold.

A dim red glow gathers around Talos’s hand, then vanishes as the demon withdraws its guidance. The lesson leaves his muscles trembling, but unharmed.

You will learn the rest through necessity. Gather companions, Talos. The Red Lord will not wait forever.

Talos leaves the cave and follows the rough path through the fields. By dusk, the hidden sign of the Tidal Tavern appears between leaning stones.

Warm lamplight spills beneath the tavern door. Inside, Keith’s broad dwarf silhouette moves behind the bar, while muffled voices fall quiet at the sound of someone entering.

“Head off to the tidal tavern”

Arrival at the Tidal Tavern
Keith

Talos pushes open the Tidal Tavern’s heavy door. Warm lamplight washes over his scarred face, carrying the scents of stew, oak smoke, and spilled ale.

Keith, an adult dwarf man with a broad, heavyset frame, braided brown beard, and a worn green vest, looks up from behind the bar. His round nose bears an old pale scar.

Keith

Keith

Well now. Come in, lad. Shut the cold out behind you.

Talos closes the door, and the tavern’s hush loosens into cautious murmurs. A few patrons glance toward his sheathed father’s blade before returning to their cups.

Keith

Keith

You look like the road has been unkind. Sit by the hearth if you need warmth. No one here will trouble you.

The hearth crackles against the cave-cold clinging to Talos’s clothes. Behind the bar, Keith sets out a wooden cup and waits without pressing him for an explanation.

“I try to rest and feel something Keith is using magic to see my memories I could resist but I let him see my pain”

Talos settles beside the hearth, letting its warmth loosen the cold in his clothes. Keith remains behind the bar, one hand resting near the wooden cup.

A faint shimmer gathers around Keith’s fingers, more like lamplight caught in water than a spell. Talos reaches with his awareness, searching for its source.

Talos

Talos

The magic is too faint for me to identify.

Talos does not resist. The shimmer brushes past his guarded thoughts, and broken impressions rise: a vanished home, frightened silence, and the weight of a father’s blade.

Keith

Keith

Easy, lad. I can see that something hurt you, but not who did it or why.

The shimmer gutters out. Keith withdraws his hand, leaving the attempt unfinished and the memories blurred beyond his understanding.

Keith

Keith

Whatever road brought you here, you need rest before you tell its whole story. The hearth is yours tonight.

“I tell Keith my plan and try to force the demon in my body to show itself and it says "I want you to try to force me to reveal myself even if you fail I will reveal my self for the sake of giving us numbers I just wanna see if you can without my permission"”

FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -1)

Talos

Talos

Keith, I need companions. I mean to gather a party, face the Red Rangers, and bring down their leader, Red Lord Talon.

Keith’s fingers tighten around the wooden cup. The tavern’s low murmur fades again as the dangerous name settles between them.

Talos

Talos

The demon is inside me. I will force it to reveal itself.

Talos turns inward and presses his will against the presence beneath his skin. Dark warmth coils through his chest, but the unseen presence does not yield to his command.

The Demon

The Demon

You want to force me into the open, even if you fail. Then I will reveal myself for the sake of giving us numbers. I only wanted to see whether you could do it without my permission.

The words emerge in Talos’s voice, doubled by a deeper echo that makes the hearth flame bend. The pressure vanishes, leaving the demon exposed but not mastered.

Keith

Keith

A demon, then. I heard it clearly. Lad, speak carefully, and tell me whether that thing can take control of you.

The speaker is liable to be killed by the Red Rangers.

“I say "I believe you hate the red rangers I doubt you would turn me in please I cant take their rule any more their are kids in those camps of torment they have help me Keith please"”

SUCCESS (Fair Persuasion, rolled +1)

Talos

I believe you hate the Red Rangers. I doubt you would turn me in. I cannot take their rule anymore. There are children in those camps. Please, Keith, help me.

Talos’s plea hangs in the tavern. A patron, a wary middle-aged man with a lean build, weathered brown skin, close-cropped black hair, and a faded gray tunic, quietly lowers his cup, while Keith’s face hardens beneath his braided beard and the fire throws red across the walls.

Keith

Keith

Aye. I hate what they have made of this world. And I believe you, lad. Children should never be payment for a lord’s power.

Keith crosses to the door and drops the iron bar into place. His hand trembles once before he turns back, having chosen secrecy over safety.

Keith

Keith

You have my help. But hear me clearly: those words named you an enemy under their law. If the Rangers learn them, they will call for your death, and mine for sheltering you.

Keith

Keith

I can offer food, a bed, and names of people who still resist quietly. In return, you owe me a favor when I ask it. No arguments, no grand promises.

The tavern’s patrons avoid Talos’s eyes, but none leave. Keith sets the wooden cup before him, and the tavern becomes his first uncertain refuge.

The Demon

I can read the dwarf’s mind. He intends to join your party and stand beside you against the Red Rangers.

Dark warmth threads from Talos toward Keith. The tavern blurs into fractured impressions: a stout silhouette, guarded instincts, and a stubborn will braced against intrusion.

The Demon

The Demon

I reach deeper. His training, his spells, the strength in his body. Hold still, and I will pull them into the light.

The attempt catches on something unseen. Keith’s faint magic snaps shut like a clasp, and the returning force jolts through Talos’s chest without harming him.

Keith

Keith

Get out of my head. I felt that, lad. Whatever bargain you made with that demon, it has crossed a line.

The failed link leaves Keith aware of the intrusion and the demon’s presence. Talos gains no reliable measure of Keith’s health, skills, or spells.
