Adventure of Genova 1

The pine path opens onto an abandoned stone shelter, its roof sagging beneath moss and silver rain. Genova crosses the threshold with the tightly bound pelt, while the rival stops just beyond the broken lintel.

Cold ash scents the air. Along the shelter wall, old hunting marks wind through lichen, their cuts deeper and older than the boundary stones outside.

A horn sounds far off among the pines, answered by another from the ridge. The wardens are searching, and their calls draw nearer.

Beneath the newest lichen, one carved sign shows a spear laid across a crescent trail. Beside it, a weathered mark depicts two hunters standing outside a ring of stones.

Genova studies the spear, crescent trail, and ring of stones as one law, then scrapes away the wet lichen with her fingertips.

The hidden cuts join into an older sentence: within the ring, the hunter who recovers game on their ground keeps the kill, whatever hand first draws blood beyond the boundary.

A sharp flake of stone opens Genova's palm. Her blood darkens the ancient groove, and the scrape rings through the shelter toward the approaching horns.

Below the sentence, the two hunters outside the ring are named as witnesses, not claimants. The carving confirms the pelt belongs to the ground's people, while the rival's account of the first strike remains true.

The nearer horn answers from just beyond the pines. The rival shifts from the lintel and watches Genova's blood-marked hand, waiting to see whether she will show the proof or carry it past the wardens.
