The chapel door groans shut behind Holly Sandahl and Bram, and the woods swallow them in gray mist. Silver-barked trees lean overhead, their roots knotting the mud like old scars.

Bram
We need reagents before I can attempt the rite. Bloodleaf, grave moss, and a shard of black salt. The forest keeps them, if it wants to.
He points deeper between the trees, where the path splits around a hollow choked with thorn and dew. The ward around the child flickers faintly back through the chapel stones.

Bram
Bring them to me, and I will open the ward long enough to show you what lies beneath. If we name the thing below, we can bind it properly.
Bram reaches into his belt pouch and draws free a small brass token stamped with a chapel seal, then holds it out to Holly Sandahl.

Bram
Take this as proof. Return with the reagents, and the chapel vault yields a proper reward, enough silver for your road and a focus stone fit for spellwork.
The mist stirs. Somewhere ahead, something pale shifts between the trunks, then is gone. Bram keeps his hand extended, waiting.

Brass chapel token
Holly Sandahl leaves Ruined hill chapel behind and arrives at a cemetery.
“I cast a level nine spell, holding out my diamond worth 10,000 GP and cast gate to a cemetary”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

The cemetery answers in cold breath. Tilted stones crowd the hill, and black soil parts beneath Holly Sandahl as her spell snaps open like a door in the air.
Mist pours through the ring of graves. Her diamond flashes once in her paw, then the light is swallowed by a pale archway that swells wider than the trees.

Bram
By the seal... that is enough power to tear a path clean through the wards.
The air folds, and a hidden aisle of dead lilies and bone-white statuary stands revealed beyond the grave markers. Cold incense drifts from inside, carrying the sour trace of black salt.

Bram
Good. We are here. Bloodleaf grows where the roots drink old vows, grave moss clings to the oldest names, and the black salt will be buried beneath a marker that has never known fire.
He catches the token before it can fall, then points toward three different shadows among the stones. The cemetery has divided itself into a choice.
“"where did my diamond for this spell go?"”
FAILURE (Poor Perception, rolled -3)

Holly Sandahl lowers her gaze to the churned soil where the spell opened, but the diamond is gone from the slick of black earth. Only a faint crescent gouge marks where it skittered away.

Holly Sandahl
It was in my paw a moment ago.
The search shifts from the open path to the graveside edge. Her ward light catches on wet moss, broken twigs, and a narrow seam between two stones.
The diamond is not there. Worse, the exposed seam begins to drink in the spell residue, and a thin frost crawls over the nearest marker.

Bram
Careful. The opening has stirred the ground. If the focus is lost, the route may collapse.
A pale glimmer flashes once beneath the dead lilies farther down the aisle, half-buried and sliding slowly toward a root-choked dip in the stones.

Bram
There, by the roots. Move quickly, or the cemetery will take it.
“I move over and grab it”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Holly Sandahl darts through the dead lilies and closes both paws around the pale glimmer before the roots can draw it under. The object comes free with a scrape of grit and wet bark, cold as cellar stone.

Holly Sandahl
Black salt.
The shard catches the ward light, dark and glassy, flecked with ash-white seams. The nearest roots twitch back from her touch, and the frost on the marker halts at once.

Bram
Good. Keep that close. We are not losing another piece to the ground.
Bram steps in from the aisle edge, posture tight with relief and urgency, eyes fixed on the shard rather than the graves around them. Behind him, the mist stirs against the stone archway like a held breath.

Bram
One reagent down. Bloodleaf and grave moss remain, and the cemetery is already listening.

Shard of black salt
“I go over to a grave and grab some grave moss, awakening te undead inside”
SUCCESS (Great Survival, rolled -1)

Holly Sandahl moves to the nearest grave, the one with a cracked angel leaning over its name. Damp green moss clings to the stone in thick patches, and she scrapes a handful free as the roots beneath the marker shiver awake.
The moss is cold and heavy in her paw, slick with old rain and grave earth. Beneath the soil, something knocks once, then again, slow as a fist from below.
A pale hand breaks the dirt. Then a second. The grave opens its mouth, and a half-buried corpse pushes itself upright with a wet, grinding breath.

Bram
Keep calm. Do not strike unless you must. We need what the cemetery is willing to give.
Bram does not look at Holly first. His eyes snap to the stirring grave, already measuring the threat to the rite, brass token clenched in his hand.
The undead does not lunge. It only turns its blank face toward Holly and starts hauling itself free, soil falling in heavy clods around its ribs.
+ New Item Acquired
Grave moss
“I put on my Enhanced Gauntlet and power it up with my magic”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled -2)

Holly Sandahl slides the enchanted gauntlet into place and draws a thread of power through it. Blue-gold light wakes along the seams, answering her magic with a low, hungry hum.

Holly Sandahl
The fit holds.
The glow sharpens, then bites back. Heat pricks her paw through the metal, and a few sparks spit into the damp grass.

Bram
Good. Keep it stable. I feel the ward respond.
Bram steps closer, gaze flicking from the light in her hand to the grave opening. The corpse turns its head at the flare, soil sliding from its shoulders.
Somewhere deeper in the cemetery, branches creak under a pale, watching weight. The powered gauntlet casts a hard circle of light across the marker and the rising dead.
“I use the gauntlet to attack the zombie”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +1)

The gauntlet flares when Holly twists her paw, and the light lashes outward in a hard blue-gold arc. It strikes the thing hauling free from the grave and throws it back against the soil.
Loose dirt bursts up around the body. Its reaching arm drops, slackened, and the ward-light crawls over its chest like frost.

Bram
Good. That holds the grave down.
Bram snaps his attention from the corpse to the disturbed earth, already measuring the damage. The pale watcher in the trees keeps still, as if listening.

Holly Sandahl
The charm is driving the dead back into the grave.
The marker shudders, then settles. What was rising is forced flat under a crust of dim, trembling light, and the cemetery goes briefly, eerily quiet.

“I search for bloodleaf”
FAILURE (Poor Perception, rolled +0)

Holly combs the cemetery edge, nose low among wet roots and stone chips. She finds no red leaves, only a thorny vine that has wound itself around a fallen angel’s hand.

Holly Sandahl
The bloodleaf is not here, or not where I can see it.
When she brushes the vine aside, a hidden patch of damp earth shows through, darker than the rest. Tiny crimson veins stain the soil beneath the mulch, but the leaves themselves are gone, clipped clean.

Bram
Someone harvested this bed already. Freshly, too.
Bram crouches at the broken patch, fingers hovering over the cut stems. His gaze slides to the inner aisle ahead, where the mist thickens around a row of leaning markers.

Bram
There is another source beyond the stones. Follow the drainage run, or the trail ends here.
The frost on the nearest grave creaks and thins, then points, like a pale arrow, toward a narrow dip between two tombs.

“I enter the drainage dip”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Holly slips into the drainage dip, boots skimming wet stone as the cemetery floor drops away under the tombs. The frost-arrow breaks over her path and the air grows colder, thin as cellar breath.

Holly Sandahl
The dip runs under the graves.
She lands in a cramped channel choked with roots and black runoff. Above her, the markers lean together like teeth, and the stripped bed lies behind her in the mist.

Bram
Good. Stay low. If the bloodleaf was cut here, the residue may still cling to the runoff.
Bram remains at the rim, one hand braced on a stone, eyes fixed on the hollow with the same hard attention he gives the seal below the chapel.
In the ditch ahead, a torn red stem glints beneath a tangle of roots, pinned in place by a crust of pale ice.

Bram
There. Take it before the thaw carries it off.
“I grab it”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

Holly reaches under the roots and hooks the torn red stem free. Pale ice flakes off in her fingers as the runoff gives way, and the bloodleaf comes loose cleanly.

Holly Sandahl
The stem is intact.
She draws it up before the black water can pull it under, the bright shred sharp against the mud-dark channel.

Bram
Good. Keep it dry, if you can.
Above the dip, Bram straightens a fraction, relief checked by urgency as he watches the bloodleaf in her grasp.

Bram
That is one reagent secured. We still need the others, and the ward will not wait forever.
