The freed prisoners’ footsteps fade down the black-stone passage toward the eastern forest. Kodiak remains in the altar chamber as dragging steps rasp behind him, and the violet glow suddenly dims.

The sorcerer hunter emerges from the corridor, coat torn and one shoulder dark with blood, yet still mobile. He grips a fist-sized shard of black altar stone.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

The veiled woman escaped upward when the seal broke. I followed after keeping the remaining vessels from the light.

The shard pulses in time with Kodiak’s spear. Each answering beat makes the altar’s cracks brighten, while dust slips from the ancient ceiling.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

This fragment carries the altar’s listening. I can use it to seal the standing stone’s boundary, or draw the altar’s attention straight to it.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

Your companions are already on that path: the antlered thing, the unfinished vessel, and six escaped prisoners. Choose before the pulse finds them.

Behind the hunter, the upper corridor remains empty. Somewhere above, iron groans, and the shard’s black surface opens a thin violet eye toward Kodiak.

“"draw the attention here, I'll hunt whatever this being is."”

Kodiak

Draw the attention here. I will hunt whatever answers.

The sorcerer hunter raises the black shard toward the altar, keeping it beyond Kodiak’s reach. Its violet eye fixes on the stone behind them.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

Then stand ready. I can call its gaze, but I cannot command what looks back.

He presses the shard against a crack in the altar. The chamber darkens around Kodiak as every violet fissure turns toward the hunter’s wounded hand.

The lure catches, but not cleanly. The altar’s attention floods the chamber instead of taking shape, sealing the upper corridor in a skin of black stone.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

It has noticed us, but the vessel refuses a body. The shard is no longer a lure. It is an anchor.

The hunter tears the shard free. A narrow violet trail remains across the floor, ending at the sealed corridor, while the altar’s pulse gathers beneath Kodiak’s boots.

“"if you can anchor it down, I'll confront the entity."”

FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -3)

Kodiak

Kodiak

If you can anchor it down, I will confront the entity.

The sorcerer hunter angles the black shard toward the altar’s brightest fissure. Kodiak cannot reach it; the fragment remains locked in the hunter’s bloodied grip.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

Then I will pin its attention here. Do not mistake an anchor for a chain.

He drives the shard into the violet trail. The stone accepts it for one heartbeat, then cracks around the fragment. A black vein races across the floor toward Kodiak’s boots.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

No. It is anchoring through us, not to the altar.

The altar’s attention condenses above the shattered trail into a tall, faceless silhouette of violet light, a genderless, ageless humanoid manifestation with no visible features beyond its luminous outline. The sealed corridor groans as black stone folds inward, cutting off the upper way.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

It has found a nearer vessel. If you confront it now, you face it inside the chamber, while I keep this breach from widening.

“I hurl my spear into the entity”

Kodiak hurls his spear. It crosses the dim chamber in a straight, punishing line and drives through the violet silhouette’s center, pinning its light against the cracked altar wall.

The faceless entity collapses around the weapon instead of bleeding. Violet radiance pours along the shaft, while the altar’s fissures flare and the black anchor shudders in the floor.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

You struck the manifestation itself. Hold your ground, wanderer. Its shape is broken, but its attention remains here.

The entity’s outline folds inward around Kodiak’s spear, compressing into a dense knot of light. The sealed corridor stops groaning, and fragments of black stone fall harmlessly from its surface.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

The spear has made it tangible. I can cut the anchor now, but the choice of what follows belongs to you.

The hunter raises his curved blade beside the embedded spear. The entity remains fixed against the altar, its featureless head turning toward Kodiak as the chamber waits for his next move.

✓ Quest Accepted

Contain the entity answering the altar

Quest Complete

Confront the entity answering the altar

Attribute Upgrade: Reasoning Good→Great

“I grab the shard and leap towards the entity, bashing the shard into the entity's skull.”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +2)

Kodiak lunges for the black anchor. His hand closes around the shard, wrenching it free as violet force snaps through his arm and the altar cracks flare.

He launches across the chamber before the hunter can strike. The entity’s compressed light twists around the embedded spear, its featureless head turning toward him.

Kodiak bashes the shard into the entity’s skull. Black stone meets violet radiance with a thunderous crack, and the manifestation caves inward around both weapons.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

You took the anchor into your hand. Hold it there, or the altar will pour its whole attention through you.

The shard sinks into the entity’s crown and locks in place. Violet lines race from its faceless head down the altar wall, while the black anchor’s vein recoils from Kodiak’s boots.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

Good. It is bound to the wound now. I can sever the altar’s claim, but the thing will answer through that shard.

The entity jerks against the spear, no longer formless but pinned and trembling. From within its crushed skull comes a voice like stone grinding beneath deep water.

Black altar shard

“I repeatedly slam my fist into the entity, crushing its skull”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +2)

Kodiak’s fist crashes into the entity’s faceless skull. Violet light buckles around his knuckles, and the embedded spear rings against the altar wall.

He strikes again and again, each blow crushing the luminous crown inward. The shard sinks deeper, splitting the manifestation’s outline into collapsing bands of radiance.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

Enough. You are breaking its vessel, not merely its shape.

Kodiak’s final blow caves in the entity’s skull completely. Its grinding voice cuts off, and the violet body implodes around the spear and black shard.

The altar’s fissures flare once, then pour their gathered light into the crushed weapons. The chamber floor jolts, but the sealed corridor remains intact.

The Sorcerer Hunter

The Sorcerer Hunter

You killed the manifestation. Now the altar has no face to wear, and it is searching for another.

A thin violet thread slips from the ruined crown and crawls across the stones toward the upper passage, where the escaped prisoners fled.
