The Woodcutter

The construct shrieks against the roots, and the green around it sickens in a ring. Bark darkens, leaves curl, and the forest edge begins to pull back from the poison leaking at its seams.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

Its sap, it’s ruining everything. Can you stop the leak?

& feels the binding strain, but the splintered wedge holds the lower joint just long enough for her to reach the source. The glowing fluid hisses where it touches soil, eating through moss and root alike.

&

&

The fluid is harming the roots.

A new surge of roots snakes up from the ground, not to crush the machine, but to seal the open seams and catch the spill before it spreads farther into the clearing.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

Yes, like that. Hold it, just a little longer!

For a heartbeat, the construct slows. Then the gears grind harder, testing every vine, as if something inside it knows the woods are fighting back.

Use the roots to create a massive casem under the robot and burry it deep underground.

Binding the Corrosive Construct
The Woodcutter
The Woodcutter

& drives the roots lower, trying to hollow a basin beneath the construct. The ground answers, but unevenly, as poisoned soil sloughs away faster than it can be packed.

The roots split under the machine’s weight and the hole caves in crooked, not as a pit but as a jagged sink. The construct lurches sideways instead of sinking cleanly.

Corrosive fluid pours into the fresh collapse and hisses through the new channels, chewing at the roots from inside the earth.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

No, no, it is getting under the rootline!

The forest floor shudders, then settles in a wider ring of dead moss and blackened dirt. The leak is lower, but it is now feeding the soil instead of pooling on top.

&

&

The roots cannot hold in loose ground.

& feels a fresh pulse of backlash in her spell, a sting through wing and wand alike, while the construct grinds against the collapsing earth and the corruption creeps toward the clearing’s edge.

✓ Quest Accepted

Contain the corrosive leak

Summon lightning and blow up the robot.

SUCCESS (Fair Arcana, rolled +2)

& flings her wand hand upward, and white fire cracks from the storm in her palm into the construct’s chest.

The blast tears through its vine-wrapped frame. Splinters, roots, and scorched metal scatter into the sinkhole.

The corrosive stream breaks with it, losing its bite as the shattered shell drops out of sight.

A sharp sting answers the spell, and &’s wings jerk with the backlash as smoke curls from her wand tip.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

It is gone. By the green, you did it.

But the ground still hisses at the edge of the clearing, black runoff thinning into the moss in a wavering line.

Summon rainfall to wash away the run off.

SUCCESS (Fair Arcana, rolled +1)

& steadies her wand over the sinkhole and calls upward, not for power this time, but for weather.

Clouds answer fast, gathering over the clearing as the first heavy drops strike stone, root, and smoke.

Rain hammers the black runoff, breaking its sheen and driving it back from the moss in pale rivulets.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

That is working. Keep it coming, if you can.

The hissing at the rim softens as the water floods the scorched edge and the poison thins into harmless streaks.

&

&

The runoff is losing its bite.

Steam rises in ghostly sheets, and the last dark thread slips away from the clearing into the saturated earth.

Summon rainfall to wash away the run off.

FAILURE (Fair Arcana, rolled -2)

& raises her wand again, but the rain she calls comes thin and uneven, a wavering curtain that slips off the sinkhole rim before it can bite deep.

&

&

Too little. The ground is still drinking it.

The runoff answers anyway, spreading in a wider, rust-dark fan where the water fails to catch it. The soaked earth around the break blisters, then sinks another finger-width.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

It is moving past the roots, look.

He points hard at the far side of the clearing, where the poisoned streak noses toward the treeline in a shallow, ugly thread.

Steam rolls low over the mud, hiding and then revealing the line as it creeps closer to untouched moss.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

If you cannot wash it away, then seal it there. Now.

Summon rainfall to wash away the run off.

SUCCESS (Fair Arcana, rolled +2)

& steadies her wand and lets the spell widen. Rain thickens from a wavering sheet into a heavy, purposeful fall, pounding straight into the poisoned streak.

The black runoff pales as it runs, breaking into thin gray water that loses its sting in the soaked mud.

At the sinkhole rim, the last dark sheen trembles and stops. Clean water keeps striking it, holding the corruption in a shallow basin instead of letting it travel.

&

&

The rain is pinning it down.

Steam lifts in slow white veils, and the first untouched strip of moss stays green along the far edge.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

Good. Keep it boxed in.

The clearing settles under the downpour, the toxic thread contained at last while sour vapor still breathes from the sinkhole.

Binding the Corrosive Construct
The Woodcutter
The Woodcutter

& lowers her wand toward the sinkhole and slips the seed into the rim of gray mud. The little thing vanishes under the rain before it can root.

&

&

It takes.

She pours magic after it, and the spell catches for a breath. A pale green shoot twitches up through the waterlogged sludge.

Then the growth stutters. The shoot curls black at the tip, spasms once, and slumps sideways instead of taking hold.

A sour hiss rises from the basin as the seed fails to bridge the poison. The gray water keeps moving, thin lines slipping past the new sprout toward the roots beyond the hole.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

It is not taking. Stop it before the stain reaches the edge.

&'s wand hand trembles under the strain, the old magical backlash biting at her arm while the rain keeps drumming on the failing sprout.

Plant the seed of a poison eating tree in the sink hole. Then use my magic to make it grow

FAILURE (Fair Arcana, rolled -2)

& presses the seed into the muddy rim and lets it slip under the surface. The rain hammers down around her fingers as she gathers the last of her magic.

&

&

The soil is too soaked. The seed needs a grip.

She forces power through the basin anyway. The little sprout jerks up for a heartbeat, green and fragile, then twists as the poison bites back through it.

Black veins race over the new shoot. It buckles, sheds a wet curl of ash-dark leaf, and slumps into the gray water.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

No. It is fouled already. The stain is winning.

The runoff does not stop. It threads past the failed sprout and slips over the lip of the sinkhole, angling toward the untouched moss at the treeline.

&'s arm trembles from the backlash, her wand still pointed at the basin while the clearing waits for her next move.

Plant the seed of a poison eating tree in the sink hole. Then use my magic to make it grow

FAILURE (Fair Arcana, rolled +1)

& cups the seed in both hands and sends a thin pulse of magic through the mud. The sinkhole answers with a shiver, but the soil clots around the seed like dead clay.

The seed splits anyway. A pale root nips outward, touches the poison, and recoils at once, smoking at the tip.

&

&

The poison is too strong here.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

It is taking the edge of the hole, but not the heart of it.

&'s spell catches on something buried beneath the sludge, not life, but a hard seam in the sinkhole wall. The runoff beads along it instead of sinking deeper.

For a breath, the gray water hesitates. The soil still burns, yet the leak is forced into a narrower channel.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

There. If you can seal that seam, the spill may stop crawling.

Plant the seed of a poison eating tree in the sink hole. Then use my magic to make it grow

SUCCESS (Fair Arcana, rolled +3)

& lowers the seed into the narrow seam and presses it into the slick stone with her thumbs.

She feeds magic through the wound in the wall, and the seed drinks it in at once.

The seed swells, splitting a fresh root into the channel. It hooks into the seam and drinks the runoff before it can spill wider.

The gray stream thins, then breaks into beads that vanish into the growing root mass.

The Woodcutter

The Woodcutter

It is taking it. Keep it steady.

The sinkhole wall seals over in living bark and fibrous growth, and the last poison in sight is pulled under.

For the first time, the runoff stops crawling toward the trees.
