Neferteri's Story - Conquering the Ancient Power Beneath

The temple doors groan open without announcement. Meren, a mud-streaked mason, staggers across the incense-hazed hall, bearing a heavy carved stone against his chest.

The loyal worshippers surge from their kneeling places, crowding around Meren and the stone. Dust trickles from its freshly broken edges onto the polished floor.

Carved lines wind across the stone in an older hand. Beneath a jagged symbol, the inscription names a hunger that predates Neferteri's shrine.

Beyond the outer steps, the narrow passage exhales cold air into the temple foundations. Meren remains beside the stone, while the worshippers wait in a tense, reverent hush.

Her command rolls through the incense haze. The worshippers bow as one, and Meren lowers the carved stone toward the newly opened passage.

Before it can seal the way, the inscription flares with a dull red light. A deep pulse rises from below, cracking the temple floor between the altar and the steps.

The carved slab tears from Meren's grip and drops into the fissure. Instead of closing, it wedges across a slanting stairway, exposing ancient steps descending into blue darkness.

Cold air pours upward, carrying the scent of wet stone and something sweetly rotten. The direct sealing fails, but the revealed stair offers a clear way toward the sleeping hunger.

Neferteri descends first, her broad shoulders brushing ancient walls as loyal worshippers follow in a torchlit procession. Meren brings up the rear, clutching a mason's hammer.

The stair twists beneath the temple. With every step, the blue darkness thickens, swallowing torchlight until the flames burn as small, wavering stars.

Stone lurches. The stairway buckles into a steep, narrowing chute, separating Neferteri from most of her followers as they slide toward a sealed cavern below.

Neferteri reaches the cavern floor alone with Meren and three worshippers. Behind them, the broken stair hardens into a smooth wall, leaving no passage back to the temple.

Neferteri raises her head and searches the cavern, following the cold draft beneath the sour sweetness. Her gaze passes over pillars, rubble, and black pools.

There, beneath hanging curtains of mineral growth, a vast ribbed shape rests in the darkness. Its hide resembles wet stone, and dim red light pulses between its plates.

The three worshippers sink to their knees. The awakened being lifts a many-jointed head, revealing a circular mouth ringed with pale teeth.

Its voice rolls through the cavern like grinding mountains. The creature is fully revealed before Neferteri, immense and awake, while Meren grips his hammer and the worshippers bow lower.

Magic erupts from Neferteri in a blinding surge of gold and crimson. It strikes the awakened being squarely, shaking dust from the cavern roof and setting every red plate aglow.

The immense creature recoils beneath the force, its many-jointed limbs scraping furrows through the stone. The sweet rot in the air burns away beneath the scent of storm-charged magic.

Its towering head lowers. One limb folds, then another, until the ancient being bows fully before Neferteri, its circular mouth pressed near the cavern floor.

The three worshippers prostrate themselves beside Meren. The cavern trembles softly around its kneeling master, while red light gathers beneath the creature's lowered plates.
