Kael arrives in a rain-black alley as four raiders wrench open the wagon floor. Beneath the cargo, a stone-lined compartment yawns around a sealed iron coffer.

A eunuch spymaster watches from beneath a wine-red cloak, a lean middle-aged man with a shaved head, painted eyes, and a silver chain across his throat. His gloved hand lifts sharply.

The raiders spread through the alley, curved blades low. One pries open the coffer, revealing a black gemstone wrapped in rotted silk and stamped with Varric Blackhand's unmistakable sign.

Four sets of boots turn from the wagons. Lanternlight crawls over wet stone, barred doors, and the darkness where Kael stands close enough to interfere.

Kael melts deeper into the alley’s black recess, rain masking the faint shift of leather. From there, every lantern, blade, and watching face falls into clear view.

The raider at the coffer lifts the gemstone by its rotted silk. Its dark surface drinks the lanternlight, while Varric’s mark remains visible beneath the grime.

The raider obeys, revealing a narrow brass key sewn into the silk’s inner fold. Serev notices it and closes his fist around the discovery.

From his concealed angle, Kael also sees the escape route: a half-open drain gate behind the wagon, unguarded beneath the rain and broad enough for one silent body.

Serev turns toward the alley mouth, leaving the coffer, the key, and the stone momentarily in the raider’s care.

Kael’s fingers find a loose roof tile above the drain gate. He eases it free, then sends it sliding across the rain-slick stones toward the alley mouth.

The tile strikes an iron shutter with a sharp clang, then clatters into darkness. The sound resembles a hurried footfall fleeing beyond the wagons.

Serev strides toward the false disturbance. Three raiders follow, blades ready, leaving a raider alone beside the open coffer and wrapped gemstone.

Rain and distance swallow the others’ footfalls. For several breaths, the drain gate, coffer, key, and black gemstone lie beyond their attention.

Kael slips from the drain gate’s shadow and crosses the rain-dark stones. His fingers lift the wrapped gemstone package from the open coffer without disturbing the iron lid.

The rotted silk catches briefly on a jagged hinge. It gives with a faint tear, and the brass key sewn inside taps once against the stone.

Kael is already beneath the wagon’s shadow, the black gemstone secured against his chest. A raider turns, catching only a fleeting dark shape beyond the coffer.

A raider steps around the coffer and peers toward the drain gate. Rain blurs the alley, hiding Kael as he withdraws with the stolen package.

Kael remains folded beneath the wagon’s shadow, breath quiet and posture still. From that concealment, he studies the aftermath through rain and hanging strips of rotted silk.

A raider circles the open coffer, finding only the torn hinge and an empty fold where the package rested. His gaze searches the drain gate, roofline, and wagon wheels.

At the alley mouth, Serev stops the returning raiders with one raised hand. Their lanterns sweep across the stones, never touching Kael’s hiding place.

The raiders spread again, but Serev keeps his attention on the empty coffer. Kael sees the spymaster’s certainty harden: the theft was silent, deliberate, and tied to Varric’s hidden vault.

Kael withdraws beneath the wagon and reaches the half-open drain gate without disturbing a puddle. The rain folds his passage into its steady hiss.

The raiders probe beneath the wagon with spear hafts, but Kael has already slipped through the gate. Its rusted bars settle back into place behind him.

Beyond the gate, Kael crouches in a narrow runoff tunnel, the wrapped gemstone tight against his chest and Varric’s brass key hidden in the torn silk.

The tunnel slopes beneath the street toward deeper darkness. Behind him, lanternlight dwindles, and Serev’s men search the empty alley without finding a trace.

Kael follows the runoff tunnel until his keen senses catch a dry draft beneath the stink of rainwater. A cracked maintenance niche opens behind a curtain of hanging roots.

The niche is cramped but concealed from the tunnel, with a flat stone shelf above the trickle. Kael settles there, shielded from both lanternlight and the street.

He unwraps the gemstone and brass key onto the dry shelf. The black stone absorbs the faint light filtering through the roots, giving back no reflection.

Close inspection reveals fine grooves around the gemstone’s base, too regular for damage. They form a tiny pattern matching the key’s ridged teeth.

When Kael holds the key beside the stone, a dull warmth passes through the brass. Beneath the grime, its bow bears a scratched symbol: a narrow eye crossed by three lines.

The tunnel remains quiet behind him. In the hidden niche, Kael has a dry place to study both objects, and the first clear sign that they belong to one lock or seal.

Kael sets the brass key into the grooves around the gemstone’s base. The teeth fit with a precise, answering click, and the stone’s warmth spreads into his fingers.

He turns the key. A hairline seam opens through the black surface, not breaking it but unfolding it, while dim violet light leaks from within.

The gemstone separates into two dark halves on a hidden hinge. Inside rests a thin shard of tarnished silver etched with a three-lined eye.

As the inner shard clears the casing, pale markings kindle across it: a crooked route beneath the city, ending at a symbol shaped like a sealed crown.

The brass key remains seated in the opened gemstone, and the violet glow steadies, illuminating a second line of script along the shard’s edge.

Reach the sealed crown
