Artania remains crouched beside the exposed lower sigil, arms numb as the hair-thin blue-green channel holds steady. Above, Lord Vael works at the carriage’s upper seal while masked ambushers regroup among broken wagons.
The attackers rush together through the snow, boots pounding and weapons raised. The hound springs toward the first figures reaching the iron, snapping at sleeves and forcing them sideways.

the undead beloved
Artania, withdraw nothing. The ward is imitating your magic now. If it learns the channel, it may turn your own power against you.

the ambushers
Overwhelm the carriage! Break the boy’s concentration, and seize the lower mark!
Two masked adults push past the hound’s snapping lunge and reach the carriage. Their blades descend toward the iron beside Artania, scattering sparks across the snow.

Lord Vael
Hold the ward, boy! I am nearly through the answering seal, but one interruption will wake what lies beneath us.

The copied current is tightening around your spell. Choose swiftly, Artania, before the mark learns enough to pull you in.

“You feel the numbness in your arms, the sweat on your brow, and the strain on your body. You leave one hand above the seal focusing nearly all your effort on it. And with the small amount of strength you can spare you throw a thin veil of magic flames at the attacks to slow them one last time.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled -1)

Numbness locks Artania’s arms, sweat cuts through the cold on his brow, and the strain bows his body over the lower sigil. He leaves one hand suspended above it, forcing the blue-green channel to remain unbroken.
With the strength left to him, Artania turns his other hand toward the descending blades. A thin veil of blue flame spills across the snow, spreading between him and the two masked attackers.
The flames do not roar. They waver like a translucent curtain, scorching the air before the carriage and slowing the attackers’ advance as their weapons lose momentum in the shimmering heat.

the undead beloved
Good. Keep the channel steady. The ward is bound beneath your hand, and the flames have bought Vael the moment he needs.
The masked adults recoil behind the veil, boots sliding as the blue fire curls around their sleeves. The hound lunges into the opening, driving them away from the iron.

Lord Vael
The answering seal is breaking! Do not release that mark, boy. Your fire has held them back.
Above the carriage, black radiance fractures through Lord Vael’s grasp. The lower sigil answers Artania’s sustained magic instead, its feeding lines dimming as the iron remains shut.

“You ask lord Vael how much longer till you can move. You need to fight with a sword soon.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Artania Nero Thornson
Lord Vael, how much longer until I can move? I need my sword.
His words press through clenched breath and numb limbs. Blue fire still veils the carriage, while the lower sigil trembles beneath his suspended hand.

Lord Vael
Three breaths, boy. Hold the channel through them, and the ward will release you cleanly. Your sword will be yours again.
Lord Vael drives his bloodied signet into the fractured upper seal. Black radiance splinters outward, then collapses inward with a deep metallic groan.

the undead beloved
Now, Artania. The copied current is gone. Withdraw your magic, and the lower mark cannot follow you.
The blue-green thread loosens without resistance. Warmth returns in a painful rush to Artania’s arms as the lower sigil fades and the carriage’s iron remains firmly shut.

Lord Vael
You are free to move. Stand, retrieve your blade, and face them. I have bought us the truth, but not yet our safety.
“With numb fingers you brush the head of your loyal hound. You call him your best friend. You retrieve your sword once again, and prepare for the brigands renewed assault.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +3)

Artania’s numb fingers brush the hound’s head. The loyal beast presses close, snow clinging to its coat, and his touch steadies them both amid the ringing pass.

Artania Nero Thornson
You’re my best friend.
The hound answers with a fierce bark and turns toward the scattered brigands. Its alert stance reveals a narrow path through the broken wagons, clear of their strongest cluster.
Artania closes his hand around the sword’s hilt and retrieves the blade from the snow. Warmth has returned enough for a firm grip, while blue fire still shimmers before the carriage.

Lord Vael
There is your steel, boy. Let them come, and let them learn what guards this carriage.
The masked brigands regroup with weapons raised and surge through the whitening pass. The hound plants itself at Artania’s side, guarding his flank as he faces their renewed assault.

the undead beloved
The lower ward is silent now. Whatever sleeps within remains sealed, and your magic has left no path for them to open it.

Director's note
I focus my magic and take what’s left of the flames, spreading it across my sword. Then on my left hand I create a shield of force to act as protection. I whistle high. And my hound responds by sprinting around the attackers. Ready to bite at their flanks.

Artania gathers the remaining blue fire and draws it from the air into his sword. Flame winds along the blade, bright against the snow.
On his left hand, force hardens into a translucent shield, its curved surface humming as the advancing brigands raise their weapons.
Artania whistles high through the pass. The hound launches forward, sprinting around the attackers while snow bursts beneath its paws.

the ambushers
Keep formation! Do not let the beast draw you from the carriage!
The hound feints toward one flank, then veers behind another masked adult. The line twists to follow it, opening a narrow gap before the iron.

Lord Vael
Excellent. Fire on the blade, a ward in your hand, and the beast at their heels. Press them back, boy.

the undead beloved
The carriage remains sealed, but the truth is close. Watch the leader. They know more than the others.
“I take my blade and feint high to the nearest attacker, aiming toward his weapon to knock it away. Another whistle sends my friend the hound rushing around to try to heard the other attackers. My plan is to gather them close.”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Weapons, rolled -1)

Artania steps into the opened gap and feints high at the nearest masked attacker. The blue-flamed blade twists toward the raised weapon, striking it aside with a ringing clash.
The attacker’s blade spins into the snow. Before the masked adult can recover, Artania’s second whistle cuts through the pass, sharp and commanding.
The hound races around the attackers, snapping close to their flanks without losing its footing. The scattered brigands turn after it, their formation bending inward.

the ambushers
Close ranks! Do not chase the beast. Drive the boy from the carriage!
Their command comes too late. The hound darts behind another masked adult, forcing them sideways, while two more recoil from its bared teeth and collide shoulder to shoulder.

Lord Vael
That is the shape of victory, boy. Keep them gathered, and their numbers become a weakness.

the undead beloved
The leader remains apart, Artania. The others are contained, but that one is watching the carriage instead of the hound.
“I gather the magic flames on my sword and turn them into a lasso. Wrapping it around the group of attackers. Simultaneously, I whistle high to send my friend the hound to attack the leader. Becoming dangerously tired now I feel the ache deep in my bones.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +1)
Artania draws the remaining blue flames from his sword and stretches them into a blazing cord. With a sweeping motion, the lasso coils around the clustered attackers.
The magical loop tightens across dark winter gear, binding the group together. Their weapons jerk sideways, and several masked adults stumble into one another before the carriage.
At the same instant, Artania’s high whistle pierces the pass. The hound breaks from the tangled group, races behind them, and charges straight toward the separated leader.
The leader turns too late. The hound snaps at their sleeve and drives them backward, forcing their attention away from the sealed iron.

the ambushers
Cut the fire! Bring down the beast! Do not let either reach the carriage!

Artania Nero Thornson
The ache has reached deep into my bones, but the flames still answer my hand.
Artania raises his left hand, and a translucent force shield blooms before him as the bound attackers strain against their fiery restraint. Lord Vael’s signet flashes above the carriage.
“I gather the flames on my sword into the shape of a lasso, and wrap the grouped up attackers. At the same time I whistle a high pitch to cause my friend the hound, to veer towards the leader.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +0)

The force shield catches a rain of thrown blades, each weapon skittering aside in bursts of blue light. The fiery lasso cinches tighter, pinning the grouped attackers shoulder to shoulder.
Artania’s whistle cuts above the wind. The hound obeys instantly, sprinting around the bound cluster and veering toward the isolated leader, snow spraying from its paws.

the ambushers
Break the cord! The beast is coming for the commander!
The leader retreats toward a broken wagon, cloak snapping in the gale. The hound closes from the side, forcing the masked figure away from the carriage and toward open snow.

Lord Vael
Excellent control, boy. Keep that shield raised. The carriage has given me a glimpse beneath its seal.

the undead beloved
Vael, speak carefully. Whatever sleeps within is listening through the iron.
The bound attackers strain against the blazing loop while the hound circles its quarry. Beneath the carriage, the sealed iron answers with one deep, resonant knock.
“Okay time to end this. Gathering all the magical force my tired body can summon, I blast the abound attackers with all of it. Trying to knock them out.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +1)

Artania draws every remaining ember from the blazing cord and the air around him. Blue fire floods his sword, while the force shield thickens over his left hand.
The hound darts clear of the bound attackers as Artania plants his feet before the carriage. Snow spirals upward, pulled into the gathering storm of magic.

the undead beloved
Artania, the iron is listening. Strike outward, and let the ward remain untouched.
He unleashes everything. Blue flame and compressed force explode across the bound cluster, lifting masked adults from their feet and hurling them harmlessly into the snow.
The fiery lasso vanishes as the attackers collapse unconscious, weapons scattered beyond their reach. The leader falls with them, their mask half-buried beside the broken wagon.

Lord Vael
By the Dawn, you ended the assault without breaking the carriage. They will not rise soon.
Silence settles over the pass except for the hound’s proud bark and the carriage’s fading resonance. Lord Vael lowers his signet, staring at the sealed iron.
