The mountain pass lies buried beneath windblown snow. Scattered guards and shattered wagons mark the first clash, while hooded ambushers close their ring around a broken marker stone.
Behind the stone, Lord Vael, an elderly man with a narrow build, silver beard, and blue-trimmed traveling cloak, braces himself before a sealed black carriage. A bloodied signet clenches in his raised hand.

Lord Vael
You there! By the Dawn, stop and listen. This seal proves who I am. Help me, and the carriage remains unopened.
Beyond him, a pale figure advances through the snow in a torn ceremonial coat. Frost whitens their motionless face, yet the familiar shape and jeweled clasp identify them as Lord Vael's lost beloved.

Lord Vael
That is my wife. She died three winters ago, but something has brought her back. I will not let these killers take her, nor what sleeps within the carriage.
The ambushers tighten their circle, boots grinding over ice. No blade rises toward Artania yet, but every masked head turns toward him as the undead figure draws nearer.

Artania Nero Thornson
The signet is marked with fresh blood.

“Advance to protect the carriage and the Nobel.”

“I step between the ambushers and the sealed carriage.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Artania steps into the snow between the masked ambushers, a ring of bundled adult figures in dark winter gear, their faces hidden behind featureless masks and the sealed black carriage, placing his body squarely across their approach. Wind snaps at his coat.

Artania Nero Thornson
The carriage is directly behind me.

Lord Vael
Bold boy. Hold that ground, and the Dawn may yet remember your name.
The ring halts. Several masked figures shift their footing, but none crosses the space Artania has claimed. Behind him, the black seal gives a faint, cold shimmer.

the undead beloved
Vael... do not let them wake what sleeps beneath the iron.

the ambushers
Move aside, whelp. The carriage is not yours to guard.

Lord Vael
It is guarded now. Lower your weapons, or learn whether this pass still has room for your graves.

Protect the sealed carriage
“I place a hand to my sword and ask if the attackers are prepared for the end.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Artania lays one hand upon his sword’s hilt. Snow gathers on his shoulders as the masked ring watches the motion, their weapons held low but ready.

Artania Nero Thornson
Are you prepared for the end?
The question carries through the pass. For a heartbeat, only the wind answers, combing white streamers across the broken wagons.

the ambushers
Prepared? We have buried braver souls than you beneath this snow.
Their leader raises a gloved hand, and the others spread into a wider crescent instead of advancing. The carriage remains sealed behind Artania.

Lord Vael
Do not mistake their words for courage, boy. They fear what waits beneath that iron more than they fear death.

the undead beloved
Vael... the seal is weakening. Their master knows you are here.
“I draw my sword and prepare to cast a spell. I ask “but have you fought stronger”?”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -2)

Artania draws his sword, its edge catching the gray light, while his free hand gathers arcane force. Snow lifts in a tight spiral around his boots.

Artania Nero Thornson
But have you fought stronger?
The spell answers, bright threads of blue-green light winding between his fingers. The effort draws a thin line of blood from his nose, but the magic holds.

the ambushers
Stronger? We have faced wardens, wyrms, and kings beneath their crowns.
The masked crescent steadies. Their leader lowers their hand, and every weapon rises toward Artania at once, steel dark against the snow.

Lord Vael
Then make them remember this pass, boy. Do not give them time to call their master.

the undead beloved
The seal answers your magic. Artania, whatever you cast, cast it away from the carriage.
“I draw arcane power into my palm and blast it into the snow to provide a smokescreen. Throwing a wild strike with my sword at the last known location of the nearest attacker. Then I retreat to guard the carriage once more.”
SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled +3)

Arcane power condenses in Artania’s palm, then detonates into the snow. Powdered ice erupts outward, swallowing the pass in a churning white veil.
A masked attacker, an adult humanoid in bulky dark winter gear with a featureless mask lunges through the haze. Artania’s wild sword stroke meets their position, knocking the weapon from their grasp and forcing them sprawling into the snow.

the ambushers
The boy has broken our line! Find him before the carriage is breached!
Artania retreats through the storm and plants himself before the black carriage once more. The snow curtain hides him, while blue-green sparks cling to the seal.

Lord Vael
Excellent. Their sight is gone, and their formation with it. Hold there, boy, and they cannot reach the iron.

the undead beloved
The magic has shown me a second mark beneath the carriage. Vael, the seal is not the only ward.
Through the thinning haze, Artania sees the advantage plainly: a dark sigil has surfaced beneath the carriage, exposed by his blast, pulsing in time with the weakening seal.
“I gather energy into my palm and blast the snow again. While the snow shoots up I make a soft clicking noise with my mouth. My hidden hound springs forth to bite an attacker. I run to check the seal as fast as I can.”
SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled -2)

Blue-green force gathers in Artania’s palm and bursts into the snow. A second white surge climbs around the carriage, veiling the pass as his soft clicking cuts through the wind.
The hound answers at once, springing from concealment to seize an ambusher’s sleeve and drag the masked adult sideways. The attacker cries out and loses their footing.

the ambushers
The beast is with him! Watch the carriage, and do not let the boy vanish again!
Artania runs through the thrown-up snow. Spell-recoil burns across his palm, leaving two fingers numb, but he reaches the carriage and drops beside its iron underside.
The exposed lower sigil is clear now. Its dark lines drink the carriage seal’s shimmer, feeding the weakening ward from beneath rather than merely responding to it.

the undead beloved
There. The lower mark is the hand beneath the lock. Vael, it is drawing the iron open.

Lord Vael
Then keep the attackers from that ward, boy. I will break the seal’s answering command before the thing within hears them.
✓ Quest Accepted
Prevent the lower ward from opening the carriage
“I realize using more magic might be risky, but few good options remain. I gather energy again. This time in both hands. Once to blast the snow and a second more powerful blast to push the attackers back.”
SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled +1)

Artania gathers blue-green energy in both hands despite the numbness spreading through his fingers. The first pulse bursts outward, blasting snow from the carriage and exposing the lower sigil completely.
He turns the second gathering force toward the crescent of attackers. This charge grows denser and brighter, wind screaming around his arms as the dark ward flickers beneath the iron.
The stronger blast erupts across the pass. Snow and air hammer the masked adults backward, tearing weapons from several hands and scattering the formation against the broken wagons.

the ambushers
Hold the line! The ward is exposed, but the boy has driven us back!
The hound darts between fallen weapons, barking fiercely as the attackers struggle upright. No masked figure remains within immediate reach of the carriage.

Lord Vael
Well struck. The lower mark is bare now. Keep them away while I sever its command from the seal.

the undead beloved
Artania, the mark is open to your magic. Do not touch it directly, or it may answer through you.
“I realize this might be my last attempt at magic in this fight. Carefully, I do not touch the sigil with skin but which a thin stream of my magic. I have hope the beloved of this noble speaks truth of its power.”
SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled -2)

Artania Nero Thornson
The sigil is within reach, but my skin must not touch it.
Artania steadies his hands above the exposed mark. A hair-thin stream of blue-green magic leaves his fingers, crossing the cold air without touching flesh to iron.
The thread enters the sigil’s dark lines. Instead of seizing him, the ward accepts the foreign current and reverses its pull, wrenching the lower mark’s command away from the carriage seal.
The cost lands immediately: the magic drains the warmth from Artania’s arms, and his fingertips go completely numb as the last reserve of power burns through the channel.

the undead beloved
Yes. Do not break the stream. It is listening to you now.

Lord Vael
The command is severed! Hold it there, boy. I can answer the upper seal while your magic keeps the lower ward bound.
Across the pass, the scattered ambushers recover their footing and see the sigil dim beneath Artania’s suspended spell. Their leader raises a weaponless hand, shouting for the others to close in.
