The camp lies hushed beneath a gray afternoon sky. From the thorny brush, a thin mud-coated dog limps into view, ribs showing beneath its dull coat.
A worn collar circles the dog’s neck, its brass plate scratched but legible. The dog pauses, wary eyes fixed on FOXY, then lowers its head.
It releases a bloodstained leather strap at his feet. The strap lands in the mud with a soft slap, carrying a dark, earthy smell.

FOXY
The collar reads Brindle.
Brindle turnsBrindle, an adult male dog with one torn ear, turns toward the barred storehouse door and scratches at it repeatedly, the claws tapping wood between each uneven breath.
When the scratching stops, the dog glances back at FOXY, then presses its narrow muzzle to the gap beneath the door. Something shifts faintly within.

A muffled crash breaks the camp’s stillness. The barred storehouse door shudders once, and dust trickles from its lintel while Brindle recoils into the mud.
From within comes the scrape of wood against stone, followed by a strained human cough. Brindle’s torn ear lifts, and his gaze fixes on the iron bar.

Hugh
Help me, by the saints. The door is wedged from this side.
Brindle circles the threshold, whining softly. Beneath the door, a pale hand appears, fingers dragging through the mud before vanishing again.

FOXY
The voice is trapped behind the bar.

Hugh
I served in the western camp. I know why Garran never returned, but smoke is filling this place.
A thin gray thread curls through the gap beneath the door. Brindle barks once, then paws urgently at the mud beside the threshold, uncovering a second key half-buried there.
“Grab the key and see if it helps to open the door if not use strength to pry the door open to help the trapped camp witness”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +1)

FOXY snatches the half-buried key from the mud. Brindle presses close as FOXY wipes the grit against his leather and fits the key into the storehouse lock.
The key turns with a stubborn click. The bar remains jammed from within, and gray smoke thickens along the threshold while the trapped man coughs again.

FOXY
The bar is holding the door, not the lock.
FOXY wedges his shoulder beneath the crossbar’s edge and drives forward. The wood groans, his boot slips in the mud, and a sharp scrape opens across his forearm.
With a final wrench, the bar tears free of its inner brace. The door swings inward, spilling smoke into the gray afternoon as the pale man crawls clear.

Hugh
Air. Saints preserve me, I thought I was finished.
Brindle circles the freed witness, whining and licking his hand. Behind them, the storehouse stands open, its smoke thinning into the camp wind.
