The Crimson Dragon

You reach the dragon's bone-pit beneath a bruised violet sky. Through ancient ribs and shattered skulls, a tall adult man, lean-built with weathered bronze skin, shoulder-length black hair, and a scar splitting one eyebrow, in ash-gray robes stalks a wounded crimson dragon, a massive adult with overlapping scales, broad wings folded tight, and ivory horns curving from a long, scarred snout, his eyes burning gold.

At the pit's edge, Nebula Startouched stands motionless, her star-bright eyes fixed on the pursuit. Cosmic light gathers around her hands like a forming constellation.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

Astral child, stop the red beast. Give me the name of the one who taught it mercy, and I may spare you.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Your revenge has crossed into my sky. Take one more step, and the stars will judge you both.

The crimson dragon bares its teeth, but the bones answer first. Whispers seep from the earth between every rib, repeating the gold-eyed man's name from far below.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

You hear them too. Good. Let the dead witness what your kind did to mine.

steve the bold

The whispers are coming from beneath the pit, not from the dragons.

✓ Quest Accepted

Expose the common enemy beneath the bone-pit

✓ Quest Accepted

Secure Nebula Startouched's trust

“I raise my voice, warning Nebula and the dragon of the threat below.”

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

steve the bold

steve the bold

Nebula, dragon, the threat is beneath the pit. The dead are speaking from below us.

His warning rolls through the bone-pit. The whispers falter, then surge beneath the ancient ribs as dust trembles in the skulls around them.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

I know. The stars showed me a sealed darkness, but not its door.

Nebula turns her star-bright gaze toward the fractured ground. The crimson dragon shifts behind her, lowering its horned head until one golden eye studies the bones.

The Crimson Dragon

Then the hunter has mistaken the grave for his prey.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

You would trust an armored stranger over the voices of your ancestors?

“I ask the dragon what it knows of the voices”

Dragon, what do you know of the voices?

The crimson dragon raises its horned head. Dust slides from its scarred snout as the whispers deepen, circling the question like a flock beneath the earth.

The Crimson Dragon

The Crimson Dragon

They are not my ancestors. They are the chained dead beneath this pit, bound around a sealed chamber and taught to speak one name: Vaelith.

At the stranger's name, the bones shudder. The gold-eyed man stiffens, while Nebula's gathered starlight bends toward the cracked ground.

The Crimson Dragon

The Crimson Dragon

I heard them before he came. They remember a betrayal, but their voices overlap. I cannot tell which one speaks truth, and which one merely repeats the wound.

Nebula Startouched

Then the seal is listening as well. We have an answer, but not yet the voice we can trust.

The exchange costs precious attention. While the dragon explains, the whispers shift beneath the central skull, leaving their exact speaker uncertain but marking the sealed chamber's location.

“I ask Nebula to shield the dragon while we investigate”

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Nebula, shield the dragon while we investigate the sealed chamber.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Stand behind the stars, crimson one. I will hold the hunter and the dead apart.

Nebula sweeps both hands outward. A translucent firmament unfolds around the dragon, constellations locking into a curved shield as Vaelith’s purple fire splashes harmlessly across it.

You move to the central skull, where the bones shudder above the sealed chamber. The whispers recoil from your approach, exposing a narrow black seam beneath its jaw.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

You would pry at Vaelith’s grave while the stars cage the beast? Foolish, but useful.

The shield holds, but Nebula’s breathing turns uneven. For one stark heartbeat her starlight gutters, and her gaze loses focus before she forces the constellation bright again.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

The seal is open to your touch now. Be swift. Something below has noticed you.

“I pry open the black seam beneath the skull”

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -2)

You wedge the sword of sharpness into the black seam and haul upward. Ancient bone groans; the seam splits beneath the skull, revealing a stair descending into starless depths.

The effort tears a strip from your armored glove and bruises your palm against the hilt, but the sealed chamber stands open. Cold air pours over your boots.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

You opened it. The darkness below is awake, and it knows the shape of your strength.

The constellation shield flickers around the crimson dragon as the stair exhales a low chorus of voices. Above, Vaelith's purple fire gutters against the firmament.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

At last. You have unbarred the grave that swallowed my bloodline.

The Crimson Dragon

The Crimson Dragon

Then descend, armored one. If the dead have waited for a door, they may also have waited for a witness.

Nebula braces beneath the failing stars, while the exposed stair glimmers with faint violet script. The chamber is open, and the whispers rise from below.

“I descend into the sealed chamber”

FAILURE (Good Athletics, rolled -3)

Whispers Beneath the Bones

You descend the first steps into the sealed chamber, boots ringing against violet script. The cold thickens, and the darkness seems to press upward around your armor.

Three steps below the skull, the stair twists beneath your weight. Stone folds like a closing jaw, pitching you onto a narrow landing as the upper stair seals behind you.

steve the bold

steve the bold

The way back is sealed.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Steve, do not force the stair. The chamber has accepted you, but it will not yet permit you to choose your path.

Above, the constellation shield flares as Nebula Startouched steadies the crimson dragon. Through the narrowing seam, her starlight reaches only your shoulders before darkness swallows it.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

A witness below and a prisoner above. The grave has divided us neatly.

The landing offers three violet-marked passages, each breathing a different rhythm. Behind you, the sealed stone bears a fresh symbol shaped like a watching eye.

“I call to Nebula through the sealed stair”

FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -2)

Whispers Beneath the Bones
steve the bold

steve the bold

Nebula, can you hear me through the sealed stair?

Your call strikes the watching-eye symbol and returns as a thin metallic echo. The stone swallows your voice before it reaches the stair above, but violet light spills from the passage on the left.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Steve? I hear an echo, not you. The leftward passage is answering your call. Follow its light, and do not trust the other paths.

Her voice fades into layered whispers. The left passage brightens, revealing footprints pressed into its dust, all leading downward, while the center and right passages fall silent.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

The chamber is using his voice as a key. If he calls again, it may close what it has opened.

The watching eye seals shut behind you with a stone click. Your failed call has not reached Nebula, yet it has marked the left passage as a usable way forward.

“Is Vaelith the common enemy beneath the pit?”

NO, AND WORSE (Likely, rolled 99)

Whispers Beneath the Bones

The violet script beneath your boots rearranges itself. The three passages vanish, replaced by a single descending stair, while the watching eye reopens behind you and turns toward the darkness below.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

No, armored witness. I am not the enemy beneath the pit. I am the name it wears when it wishes the living to blame me.

A deep impact rolls through the chamber. The stair bucks, and violet letters crawl across the walls, copying the shape of your armor and tracing your wounded glove.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

It has found a stronger witness. My blood opened the grave, but your hand has given the buried power a new door.

From far above, Nebula's starlight flares through the sealed stone, then bends sharply downward. Her shield around the crimson dragon gutters as something answers from beneath your feet.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Steve, the chamber is not trapping you anymore. It is preparing to send something through you. Do not let the stair choose where you stand.

The new stair opens onto a vast black chamber below. At its center, a pale symbol shaped like an open palm forms in the air, waiting beneath your descending shadow.

“I call Nebula through the sealed stone”

FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

steve the bold

steve the bold

Nebula! Can you hear me through the sealed stone?

Your voice strikes the watching-eye symbol, but the stone bends it downward instead of carrying it up. The open palm below fills with pale light, and a second outline appears within it, shaped like Nebula's star-bright hand.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Steve, I hear you only through the chamber. Do not call again. It is learning my voice through yours.

The answering outline cannot cross the sealed stone, yet it presses against the open palm below. Violet script gathers around its fingers, revealing a narrow sigil shaped like a star split by a door.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

There is your opening, witness. The grave cannot reach her, but it can imitate the bond between you.

The palm turns toward the split-star sigil. It offers no passage back to Nebula, but the mark now shows where her distant magic touches the chamber, giving you a way to answer without calling again.

“Is the buried power imitating Nebula's magic?”

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 23)

Whispers Beneath the Bones
Nebula Startouched
Nebula Startouched

The split-star sigil darkens at its center. Nebula’s handprint remains bright around it, but the light now copies her constellation pattern with imperfect, hungry precision.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

Yes. It has no star-sight of its own. It is wearing hers, drawn through the echo of your bond.

The pale palm closes halfway, and the copied starlight crawls across its fingers. Where Nebula’s distant magic should guide, the buried power now rehearses her gestures and learns their shape.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Then the light below is an imitation, not my hand. Do not answer it as though it were me.

Her warning reaches you through the chamber’s warped channel. The false outline immediately bends toward her voice, confirming the buried presence can echo what passes between you.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

It imitates magic, witness, but imitation is not mastery. That distinction may be the only shield left to her.

The false star splits into three dim copies, each reaching toward the unseen stair above. The chamber has revealed its deception, and the copied light waits for another voice to teach it more.

✓ Quest Accepted

Sever the chamber's imitation of Nebula's bond

“Can Vaelith's blood sever the imitation?”

YES (Likely, rolled 37)

Whispers Beneath the Bones

The three false stars recoil from one another. A dark red thread appears within the split-star sigil, pulsing with the buried chamber’s memory of Vaelith’s blood.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

Yes. My blood can sever what it opened. The imitation wears Nebula’s light, but it cannot survive the mark that belongs to me.

The red thread lashes across the false hand. One copied constellation gutters, then another, their borrowed stars peeling away into ash-colored sparks.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Then his blood is not merely a key. It is a boundary. If it reaches the imitation, the chamber must choose which bond it will keep.

The remaining false outline tightens around the split-star sigil, resisting the severing thread. Its borrowed gestures become jerky and incomplete, no longer able to mirror Nebula’s distant magic.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

It will cut her echo away, witness, not harm her. But the chamber will lose its imitation only when my blood touches the mark.

The red thread settles into the sigil, proving the answer: Vaelith’s blood can sever the imitation, though the buried power still holds the mark beneath its fading borrowed light.

− Scene Quest Removed

Expose the common enemy beneath the bone-pit

“I guide Vaelith's red thread into the remaining false hand.”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +3)

Whispers Beneath the Bones

You pinch the red thread between armored fingers and guide it toward the remaining false hand. It bends obediently, following your deliberate motion through the pale air.

The thread enters the false palm and races along its copied fingers. The imitation collapses inward without resistance, shedding Nebula’s borrowed constellations as ash-colored sparks.

The Gold-Eyed Man

The Gold-Eyed Man

Well guided, witness. You have severed the echo without spilling her light.

The false hand vanishes, leaving the true split-star sigil exposed. Beneath it, a narrow stair of red-veined stone opens into darkness, descending beyond the chamber.

Nebula Startouched

Nebula Startouched

Steve, I feel the imitation disappear. The path below is real now, and the chamber can no longer use my magic to shape it.

The red thread withdraws into the sigil and hardens into a bright vein pointing down the newly opened stair. Its glow reveals words carved beneath the threshold: Blood remembers the door.

Quest Complete

Sever the chamber's imitation of Nebula's bond
