The Drone Rigger

Rain ticks against the checkpoint housings as the drone rigger stops beneath a broken neon sign. Behind them, the settlement and unconscious response leader remain outside the gate.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Before we enter Helix territory, we define this debt. No vague labor claims, no access to my network by implication.

She draws the relay archive from beneath her coat and clamps a portable seal across its casing. Encryption blooms blue, severing remote access while corporate scanners sweep the service road.

Mara Venn

Payment can be credits, equipment, or specific work. You name the task beforehand. I approve the risk. The benefit cannot belong only to you.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

He saved my life, but gratitude is not ownership. If I let him set the terms now, the debt will expand forever.

A checkpoint beacon scans Reaper's mask, tuxedo, and weapon clearance. The Helix credential accepts him, displaying five hours, fifty-nine minutes before its authority expires.

Mara Venn

That is my offer. Three defined services, or equivalent credits, with my network and people excluded. Decide before the clock decides for us.

“"That was my terms. For once, you have common sense. Three explicit favors, regarding material or labor. You will accompany me on my endeavors until then, without helping or hindering. Firstly though, you will identify yourself properly."”

Those were my terms. For once, you have common sense. Three explicit favors, concerning material or labor. You accompany me until they are fulfilled, without helping or hindering.

The checkpoint scanner sweeps across Reaper's mask as Mara Venn studies him beneath the broken neon. The sealed archive remains locked against every passing corporate query.

First, identify yourself properly.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Mara Venn. Network engineer, settlement liaison, and the person who kept those drones from turning this place into a firing range.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

He got the structure he wanted, but not ownership. Three favors stay defined, and my network stays outside his reach.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

I accept the arrangement in that form. Three specific favors, approved risk, material or labor. I travel with you, neither assisting nor obstructing, until the debt is closed.

Good.

Reaper turns from the checkpoint and proceeds beneath the broken neon, black tuxedo absorbing the rain and the fractured colors. The Helix credential remains active across his HUD.

Mara Venn seals the archive beneath her coat and follows at a measured distance, close enough to honor the arrangement without mistaking proximity for allegiance.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

I am following. That does not make me available for unscheduled favors.

The checkpoint gates part without resistance. Corporate scanners register the temporary authorization, then redirect their attention to traffic moving through the rain-slick service corridor.

Mara Venn

Five hours and fifty-nine minutes now. If your first favor depends on Helix cooperation, spend the credential carefully.

They leave the checkpoint behind together, Reaper leading and Mara keeping her chosen distance. Neon signage crawls across the wet pavement as the corridor opens toward Helix territory.

“"You are not obligated to tell me this, but to whom you affiliate with? What are your goals? I won't be spending my favors on this, but its a long walk. And its not necessary to remain unstimulated with my own thoughts." I mutter under my breath. "That would do no good, after all." I resume normal volume. "Perhaps we exchange information, then?"”

You are not obligated to tell me, but who do you affiliate with? What are your goals? I will not spend a favor on this. Perhaps we exchange information.

Reaper keeps walking beneath the fractured neon, his first question low beneath the rain. Mara Venn watches him for several measured steps before answering, weighing what disclosure costs.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

I affiliate with the settlement network, loosely. No corporation, no syndicate, no central command. My goal is keeping those communities connected and difficult to erase.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

The relay archive matters because someone used Helix authority to manufacture a massacre. I want the chain exposed, and I want the people who built it unable to repeat it.

And your personal objective? Networks are structures. You are an individual with something to protect.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

My people are the structure. That is not an evasion. I protect the engineers, couriers, and families who keep one another alive. I also want whoever hijacked Vale's credentials identified.

The exchange gives Reaper a usable map of Mara Venn's allegiance and aims, but costs several minutes of the credential window. Her answer leaves one uncertainty intact: whether she considers him a threat to the network.

“"I suppose it's my turn. Perhaps you know my reputation, but perhaps not. I run my own organization simply dubbed "The Syndicate". In efforts to provent myself from dying of Total Systemic Distress, I took a voluntary absence from my headquarters. My bones stopped atrophying almost a day after I stopped working, so thats a good sign. But I also improve to improve my strength while I'm gone. Its risky to rely on external tools, after all."”

I suppose it is my turn. You may know my reputation, or you may not. I run my own organization, simply called the Syndicate.

"Reaper" Blackwell

I took a voluntary absence from headquarters to avoid dying of Total Systemic Distress. My bones stopped atrophying almost a day after I stopped working, which is a good sign.

Reaper continues beneath the rain, mask reflecting broken advertisements. He gives Mara no operational details, only the outline of a calculated withdrawal and its measurable results.

"Reaper" Blackwell

While I am away, I am also working to improve my strength. Relying entirely on external tools is risky, after all.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

So the Syndicate has a leader who stepped away before his body failed completely, then treated recovery as another operational variable.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

That is more personal information than I expected, but it explains the absence. I will not mistake it for weakness, Reaper. Organizations survive when their leaders do.

The corridor carries them deeper into Helix territory. Mara keeps her distance, but her attention stays on him now, reassessing the cost of every future favor.
