John Grey fell and Vharuun rise from the cellar into warmth and noise. The tavern is alive again, all candlelight, roasted meat, and ale-soaked cheer, with fiddle music skipping over the rafters.
John’s healed hand rests smooth at his side, and he wears a small, easy smile as he gestures toward the bar. Vharuun follows at his shoulder, newly mortal, newly still.
Bram stands behind the counter, wiping a cup he does not seem to need to wipe. Fear lingers in his posture, but curiosity has taken hold of his face.

Bram
You came back... and the room feels lighter for it. I was not expecting that.

Vharuun
A body. A chair. The plain weight of a room. This is... instructive.
John takes the barstool he is offered, and the village music swells behind him. Nearby dancers turn in easy circles, their laughter briefly spilling across the floorboards.

Bram
If you mean to drink, the first round is on me. If you mean to speak, I am listening this time.

Vharuun
I was told to serve. I should like to understand the shape of the service, and the shape of this world.

Keep the tavern from challenging John's control
“" Bram would you kindly fetch the best ale and stew in this place. I'm hungry and thirsty. And Vharuun here needs something to eat and drink as well. "”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

John’s request lands plainly, and Bram nods at once, as if glad to have a task that does not require a confession. He reaches for the good jug, then signals a kitchen boy without looking away from the bar.

Bram
Best ale, then stew. For you, and for your companion. He has a face that could use bread under it.

Vharuun
Service can be fed. I am listening.
A few villagers glance over, pause at the stranger beside John, then quickly find their drinks again. Vharuun stands very still, mortal and unmistakable, as if learning how to occupy the room without casting shadow.

Bram
I have kept shelves, lies, and worse in this house. If you are staying, I would rather know what kind of company I serve now.

Vharuun
The kind that obeys John Grey fell.
Bram’s hand hesitates over the jug at that answer, then moves again. He sets ale before John first, stew after, and a second bowl beside it for Vharuun, careful and deferential.

Bram
Then eat. Both of you. I mean to learn whether this peace is real, or only borrowed.

“" Bram the peace is real. Your soul is lighter now yes? I will also wager you have learnt a valuable lesson here. Don't make bad deals. They will eventually get the better of you. "”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +2)

The warmth settles around the three of them, and Bram studies John over the rim of the bar as if weighing a verdict he can actually live with. The ale steams, the stew smells of pepper and onions, and the room keeps its easy music.

John Grey fell
Bram, the peace is real. Your soul is lighter now, yes? And take this lesson with you, do not make bad deals. They always gather their due eventually.

Bram
Aye. That one I have learned the hard way.
Bram’s shoulders loosen. His eyes flick once to Vharuun, then back to John, and some of the strain leaves his face as if a nail has been pulled from wood.

Bram
If this is peace, then it is a stranger kind than I deserve. But it feels lighter already.

Vharuun
Peace is ordered hunger. I will keep my place.
A nearby pair of villagers have gone quiet at that answer. One lowers a cup mid-sip, then resumes drinking with studied care, while another bows their head toward the bar as if remembering manners all at once.

Bram
Then I will keep mine too. No more clever bargains, no more hidden chains.
