The Masked Stranger

You arrive beneath a moonless sky at a ruined shrine, its collapsed columns tangled with ivy. Silent wolves slip between the broken stones, their eyes catching the faint starlight.

Beside the shattered altar stands a tall, slender stranger, a young adult man with a narrow visible jaw, pale skin, and a silver earring in a black hooded coat and a smooth half-mask. One gloved hand closes around the stolen ring, its wolf-shaped metal glinting like a watchful eye.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

Aaron Lycan. You have come farther than the god expected.

The pack shifts closer behind you without a growl. Their paws whisper over ash and fallen tile, sealing the path back through the ruins while the masked stranger watches your face.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

Do not reach for steel. I am not offering a fight. I am offering a choice.

He extends the ring toward you across the altar’s broken stone, though his fingers remain curled around it. Behind your shoulders, several wolves lower their heads in perfect, patient silence.

The Masked Stranger

Aaron Lycan explodes across the shattered altar, using the broken stone as a springboard. His body turns lightly through the stranger’s reach, one hand locking around the wolf-shaped ring.

The masked stranger twists aside, but Aaron’s momentum carries him past the gloved fingers. The ring tears free and lands securely in Aaron’s palm as he drops into a balanced crouch.

So the curse has not dulled your instincts.

The wolves remain motionless around the shrine, their eyes fixed on the recovered ring. Its metal is cold at first, then pulses once against Aaron’s skin like a distant heartbeat.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

Keep it, then. The choice was never whether you could take it.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

It was whether you would dare discover what it remembers.

A thin silver light spills through the wolf’s carved eyes, revealing a fleeting image beneath the shrine: ancient symbols, a blackened altar, and a path descending into darkness.

Aaron Lycan

What does the ring remember?

The ring answers before the stranger can. Silver light floods Aaron’s palm, and the carved wolf-eye shows symbols too quickly to follow. The shrine’s darkness bends toward them.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

Not a story. A warning. It remembers the last hand that carried it below this shrine.

The vision breaks into fragments: a blackened altar, a hand marked with a crescent scar, and three descending steps beneath a stone wolf’s open jaws. The final symbol smears away before its meaning settles.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

You will not read the memory by force. But you have seen enough to find the first threshold.

At the altar’s base, dust slides from a narrow seam. Beneath it, the same crescent mark glimmers faintly, pointing toward a concealed stair instead of the open descent shown in the vision.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

There. The ring remembers a door, not what waits beyond it.

“i reach my hand out to pet a wolf”

SUCCESS (Legendary Animal Handling, rolled +0)

The Masked Stranger

Aaron extends his hand toward the nearest wolf. The animal steps from the silent pack, lowers its head, and accepts his touch beneath one pointed ear.

Coarse fur warms beneath Aaron’s fingers. The wolf’s steady breath carries the scent of pine and cold ash, while the other wolves watch without shifting.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

They remember gentleness more clearly than steel.

The wolf presses its brow briefly against Aaron’s palm. Silver light answers from the ring, tracing the crescent mark beneath the altar in a thin, luminous line.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

There. It has accepted you. The hidden door will open to a hand the pack does not fear.

The wolf withdraws and turns toward the altar, its muzzle aligned with the glowing crescent. Behind it, the pack parts just enough to reveal the shrine’s concealed seam.

The silver line sinks into the stone. A quiet click answers from below, and the concealed stair begins to loosen beneath the altar’s broken edge.

The Masked Stranger

Now place the ring against the mark, Aaron Lycan. Let the shrine decide whether it remembers you.

“I go down”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

The Ring Beneath Ruins

Aaron presses the ring to the luminous crescent. Stone yields beneath his hand, and the concealed stair opens fully beneath the altar, descending into cool darkness.

He goes down without hesitation, boots finding narrow steps worn smooth by forgotten passage. Silver light from the ring follows him, revealing dustless walls carved with wolves.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

The shrine has accepted your hand. Do not mistake that for allegiance.

Above, the wolf-pack remains gathered around the opened threshold. The nearest wolf watches Aaron descend, then lowers its muzzle as though listening to something below.

The air below smells of old ash and wet stone.

The stair carries Aaron beneath the shrine into a vaulted chamber. A blackened altar waits at its center, and a crescent scar is carved into its front.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

That is the first threshold. Now the ring can show you what the last bearer left behind.

Behind Aaron, the concealed door settles shut with a muted stone sigh. Ahead, the ring’s wolf-shaped metal turns toward the blackened altar and begins to glow.

“*i press it to the alter and it shows all the wolves in-the world’s memories*”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Masked Stranger

Aaron presses the Ring of Wolves to the blackened altar. The crescent scar flares silver, and the chamber fills with layered breaths from every wilderness beneath the sky.

Memories unfurl across the stone: lone wolves crossing snowfields, mothers sheltering pups, ancient packs circling moonlit fires, and gray hunters slipping through forests untouched by men.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

You asked the ring for all their memories. It has opened the whole living chain.

The visions deepen. Wolves remember the first howl beneath a newborn moon, the god of wolves wearing a mortal face, and generations that carried his command like winter in their blood.

Among countless scents and footsteps, one memory burns brighter: a wounded bearer with a crescent scar descends these stairs, carrying the ring toward an altar already waiting.

The Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger

There is your last bearer. Watch closely. The wolves remember what he sacrificed, and why the god still hunts the ring.

The altar’s light gathers into a single silver path through the storm of memories, fixing on the scarred hand as the unseen bearer reaches toward something beneath the stone.
