Misty's small two-person ship nudges against the crowded quay. Sailors, smugglers, and curious onlookers pack the salt-stained port, their voices rolling beneath gull cries and bell chimes.

A broad-shouldered hangman approaches through the throng, a coil of execution rope over one arm. His black coat is faded, and his gaze keeps returning to the noose.

The Hangman

The Hangman

You have taken the wrong berth, sailor. I am Don Baltasar de Rojas, and I know what waits beyond this one.

The crowd quiets by degrees. Don Baltasar stops within speaking distance, gripping the rope as though it weighs more than iron.

Your search for adventure has brought you to a dangerous door. Leave now, before the harbor claims another name.

Behind him, a figure in the crowd raises a flintlock. Don Baltasar catches the movement and turns sharply, placing himself between the weapon and Misty.

Stand aside, hangman. The dragon-blooded one is the target.

Don Baltasar's hand drops toward the execution rope as the flintlock steadies. Around the quay, sailors scatter and smugglers reach for weapons.

I draw my weapon and move for cover among the scattered sailors.

Misty draws both short swords in one smooth flash and slips off the gangplank into the breaking crowd.

A sailor's abandoned crate becomes cover. Misty ducks behind it as boots and loose coils of rope scatter across the quay.

Good. Keep low, dragon-blooded one.

Don Baltasar lunges sideways, dragging his execution rope across the gunman's line of fire.

The Flintlock Bearer shifts with him, muzzle tracking past the crate toward Misty's new shelter.

You cannot hide behind dock trash forever.

The crowd surges between them, but the flintlock rises above the sailors again, seeking a clear shot.

I use my agility to zig zag my way to the flintlock bearer forcing him to constantly adjust his aim before taking off his gun hand.

Misty zigzags through the gaps, her blades forcing the flintlock bearer to jerk the muzzle after her. At the final feint, one short sword snaps across the gun hand. The flintlock spins onto the stones as its bearer recoils, clutching the useless hand, and the clear shot is gone.

I then grab a rope and tie up the would be killer.

The abandoned rope is in Misty’s hands before the flintlock bearer can recover. She cinches it around their wrists and knots it hard against a quay post, leaving the would-be killer helpless as the scattered crowd begins to stare.

“Now that that is over, sir Rojas, what was that about the harbor claiming another name?”

The smirk and the question land together, but the quay’s staring faces make the moment sharper than misty intended.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“You ask it as though a harbor were an honest witness.”

He lowers his rope and glances toward the bound flintlock bearer, then back to misty. His guarded pause gives the question weight, but not an answer.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“Names vanish here. Ships change them. Men change them. Sometimes the harbor keeps the name and loses the soul beneath it.”

The words sound practiced, yet his alarm has faded into something more personal. He offers no name, no confession, only the shape of a warning.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“That is all I meant, for now. But if you still want the truth, walk with me away from these gawking sailors, and ask again where the water cannot overhear us.”

Therefore Don Baltasar turns from the bound attacker and guides misty toward a shadowed fish warehouse, leaving the watching quay behind.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

The name belonged to a ship, the Santa Vigilia. She arrived three months ago with a crew of twelve.

The warehouse awning swallows their silhouettes. Behind them, the captive strains against the rope, while the discarded flintlock remains on the stones.

By dawn, the ship still floated. Every soul aboard had vanished, save one man who could no longer speak.

He stops beside a salt-crusted piling and looks toward the dark water, his rope hanging slack from one hand.

That survivor named me before his tongue failed. Since then, hunters have mistaken my silence for guilt.

From the quay comes a sharp whistle. The bound flintlock bearer has lifted their chin toward a narrow alley, where a second figure waits beyond the crowd.

“It sounds like one of two things. Someone used your clothes and name to frame you, or someone cursed you to attack newcomers.”

The second possibility hangs between them. Misty's reasoning finds no firm footing, and the mystery refuses to settle into either shape.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“If I were cursed to strike strangers, why warn you away? Why shield you from the gun?”

He folds the execution rope against his coat, no longer looking toward the alley. His guarded posture gives way to something worn and painfully honest.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“The survivor did not accuse me of murder. He whispered, ‘You opened the door.’ Then he pointed to my coat, as though the cloth itself had betrayed him.”

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“I have worn that coat every night since. I cannot decide whether I am hunting the truth, or carrying it closer.”

Salt wind slips beneath the awning. Beyond the shadow, the distant stranger remains only a blurred shape among the harbor crowd, while Baltasar finally meets misty's eyes.

“Would you hear what was sewn into its lining, before you decide what I am?”

hmm sounds like it could be one of two things. one someone used your clothes and name for a frame job or two someone cursed you to attack newcomers to the port.

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +3)

Baltasar answers at once. He hooks a finger beneath his coat's inner seam and tears it open, exposing a strip of black sailcloth stitched into the lining.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“That is what was sewn inside. Not a name, but a mark. The Santa Vigilia carried it beneath her captain's seal.”

The mark is a red key crossed with a drowned man's crown. Baltasar's secret becomes plain: he opened the sealed harbor door for the Santa Vigilia, believing it led to safety, and the ship vanished after passing through.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“I was not her killer. I was the one who let her leave.”

Therefore, the distant stranger stops blending with the crowd. A pistol appears in their hand, aimed across the awning's open edge, while sailors scatter from the line of fire.

Don Baltasar de Rojas

Don Baltasar de Rojas

“Down, misty. They know the mark is exposed.”

The torn lining gives misty something the stranger did not expect, a visible copy of the key-and-crown mark, and the stranger advances to take it before Baltasar can cover it again.
