Before the household can settle, the hoofbeats halt beyond the barred gate. Snow whispers against the cedar walls, and every hand goes still.
The Old Clan Friend lifts one finger for silence, then peers through the narrow shutter. A tall centaur shape emerges from the storm, limping but alert.

Genova
Open the gate. It is Genova. I bring warning, not pursuit.
The old swordsman recognizes her and unbars the entrance only after checking the road. Genova enters, snow crusting her brown fur, one arm held tightly against a shallow wound.

Genova
The warlord’s scouts found the mountain routes. I took this map from their lead rider, but their search has narrowed to this refuge.
She spreads the damp route map across the table. Red marks circle the cedar house and the passes below, while the Warlord’s Daughter and Bandit Chief lean close to study it.

The Old Clan Friend
Then the gate buys us minutes, not safety. Decide quickly. Do we hold this house, or leave before the storm reveals us?

Prevent the warlord's scouts from identifying the cedar house
✓ Quest Accepted
Reach the daimyo
“*zabuza cast a massive illusion around the ceder home*”
FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -2)

Zabuza Kenpachi gathers his ki and casts it outward from the cedar house. The storm bends around the walls, snow and lamplight multiplying into a vast, wavering landscape.
For one breath, the refuge seems buried beneath a mountain ridge, then the illusion fractures. Reflections of the house spread across the courtyard and swallow the true gate.

Genova
The veil is too broad. It hides the house, but it hides our way out as well.
The route map shimmers under overlapping images. Red marks appear at several false doorways, while the real passes blur into shifting white corridors.

The Old Clan Friend
No one moves until the images settle. A misplaced step could send us into the storm instead of onto the road.

The Warlord's Daughter
You tried to shield us. I can see that. Let us use what remains, carefully, before the veil collapses.

Genova
The illusion still confuses the marked routes. It has failed as a fortress, but it may buy us a concealed path if we read it from within.
“*zabuza cast a massive illusion around the ceder home*”
FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

The massive illusion strains across the cedar house, turning snow, walls, and lanterns into repeating corridors. Its outer reflections hold, but the inner paths slide apart beneath their feet.

Genova
The scouts will see confusion, not an empty refuge. But we cannot trust the illusion to guide us. We must mark one path by touch.
Genova presses her fingers to the table, tracing the real foundation beneath the shifting map. The false routes tremble whenever her hand crosses them.

The Warlord's Daughter
Then the house remains our anchor. We move only when the true stones answer, and no one separates from the group.

The Old Clan Friend
A wise limit. The veil is no longer a fortress, but it can become a screen. I will lead us along the foundation line.
The illusion folds inward, abandoning the distant mountain doubles and thickening around the cedar walls. Outside, the storm sees several houses, but only one rests on the true stone path.

The Bandit Chief
Your shield failed as a prison for the road, warrior. As a mask for this refuge, it may yet save us.
“*zabuza cast a massive illusion around the ceder home*”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)
Zabuza Kenpachi’s ki surges through the cedar beams and out across the courtyard. Snow, lanterns, and walls multiply into a massive ring of identical homes, hiding the true refuge.
The achievement costs him dearly. His breath catches, warmth drains from his hands, and a sharp tremor passes through his armored shoulders as the illusion settles.

Genova
It holds. From the ridge, the scouts will find a village where none exists, and every false doorway leads their eyes away from this house.

The Warlord's Daughter
You are spending too much of yourself. Let the veil protect the house, but do not let it consume you.
She reaches toward him, stopping just short of touching his armor. Behind her, the false cedar houses ripple across the storm while the true foundation remains concealed.

The Old Clan Friend
The cost is visible, warrior. We move under its cover now, before your strength falls further.

The Bandit Chief
A costly mask, but a successful one. The warlord’s hunters will chase shadows while the truth slips from their grasp.

“i know where the old leading through the mountain. *he said nearly out of breath*”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -2)

Zabuza Kenpachi
I know the old route through the mountain.
The words come between strained breaths. Zabuza Kenpachi braces against the cedar table, and the vast veil shudders as the last of his ki drains from his hands.

Genova
Then you know a way beyond the marked passes. Show us where it begins.

The Warlord's Daughter
You have given us a path, but your strength is failing. Let me support you while we prepare to move.
Genova turns the damp map toward him. Beneath the false routes, an old line of stones runs along the mountain's eastern face, concealed by snow and forgotten tracks.

The Old Clan Friend
I know that foundation line. It leads to a buried cedar stair, then through the mountain to the northern ravine.

The Bandit Chief
Then the hunters can keep chasing houses that are not there. We leave by the old way, before the veil spends what remains of him.
✓ Quest Accepted
Lead the group safely to the northern ravine
