Dusk bleeds through the inn windows, turning the common room copper and gray. A pilgrim lies sprawled beside an overturned stool, and the stale ale in the air cannot cover the iron sting of blood.
Kalazan steps in from the doorway and stops short. A sellsword stands over the body, one hand resting on her sword, the other loose at her side, as if she has been waiting for this exact moment.
Her eyes lock on him immediately. She does not flinch, does not call out, just squares her shoulders and measures the distance to the door behind him.

The Sellsword
Too late. If you came for the bounty, you should have moved faster.
The room stays silent around them. A candle gutters on the bar, and the pilgrim’s dropped satchel lies open near the corpse, its contents half-spilled across the floor.

Kalazan
The scene is staged.

The Sellsword
Now choose. You walk out and live, or you step closer and share his fate.
She shifts her grip on the hilt, ready to spring, while the heavy inn door hangs open behind Kalazan and the dark outside presses in.

Escape the inn
“Ready myself in a parry stance, ready to fight should she charge”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Kalazan lowers his center of gravity and sets his staff across his body. His hooves plant hard on the boards, shoulders angled, one arm ready to catch the first rush.

The Sellsword
There it is. A sensible choice.
She does not charge. Instead, her free hand flicks down and a thin wire flashes near the floor, stretched across the gap between them.

Kalazan
Trap line.
The sellsword shifts her weight back, testing whether he commits, while the wire trembles in the candlelight between stool and corpse.

The Sellsword
Take one step wrong, minotaur, and the room bites first.
Kalazan holds the stance. The hidden threat is now exposed, and the room has changed from threat to standoff.
“Bluff: admit she is clever, put down my staff to unarm myself in a fake surrender. At the same time, my hand behind back glows with innate magic ready to freeze her with a petrification spell.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Kalazan
You are clever. I yield.
Kalazan eases the staff down, letting its tip settle to the boards. His other hand stays hidden behind his back, palm lit by a faint, cold shimmer.

The Sellsword
Good. Keep it there.
Her eyes dip to the weapon, then climb back to his face. For one breath, her guard loosens.

Kalazan
The wire is still low.
The glow behind Kalazan’s back sharpens to a hard, pale edge. Frost prickles the air near his hidden hand.

The Sellsword
Now, take one step back, slowly. The floor is already set for the stubborn.
“I carefully step back, alert and waiting for even the briefest of moment she lets her guard down to fire off my spell.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -2)

Kalazan eases back one careful step, staff angled low, his hidden hand still bright with frost. The wire quivers under the shift, and the sellsword’s eyes snap to his feet.

The Sellsword
Stop there. One more step, and the floor does the rest.
He stops. The cold in his palm sharpens, ready to fly the instant her guard slips. A bead of frost drops from his knuckles and taps the boards.

The Sellsword
He is not retreating as fast as he should.
The sellsword shifts her weight to cover the wire, but her boot lands too close to the hidden line. The tension in it becomes visible, a pale thread singing low across the floor.

Kalazan
The wire is about to bite.
Kalazan’s backward step carries him clear of the trap’s center, but it costs him a scrape of boot leather on the floorboards. The sellsword’s blade rises a fraction, and both of them freeze, waiting for the first mistake.

The Sellsword
Back again. Slowly. Or I make the next move for you.
“With a quick hand movement, I throw my spell at her feet to petrify her entirely”
SUCCESS (Good Conjuration arcana, rolled -2)

Kalazan flicks two fingers downward. Pale magic darts to the floorboards at the sellsword’s boots, and stone blooms up in a hard shell around her ankles.

The Sellsword
What? No, move!
Her blade jerks, but the snare has already caught. The exposed wire twangs tight, then goes slack under the sudden weight of her frozen feet.
The cost lands at once, a sharp crack of ice in Kalazan’s palm. Frost crawls over his knuckles and bites deep enough to sting through the spellwork.

The Sellsword
He broke the trap. Don’t let him see the slip.
She lunges anyway, but the petrified footing steals her balance. Her boot skids, and the sword point dips toward the boards instead of Kalazan’s throat.

The Sellsword
Door. Now. Or I drag you into the tables with me.
“Call her bluff, she can't even move her legs! Calmly cast a second spell to petrify the rest of her body from a safe distance, eliminating the threat completely.”
FAILURE (Good Conjuration arcana, rolled -2)

Kalazan keeps his distance and shapes a second spell with one steady hand.
The magic reaches for the sellsword, but the stone at her ankles takes the strain and rejects the rest.

The Sellsword
Too slow.
A thin layer of frost skates over her boots, then breaks apart in dull chips. She yanks hard against the trap line, and the exposed wire shivers across the floorboards.
Kalazan’s casting hand flares cold again, then goes numb at the fingertips, the second weave collapsing before it can climb her chest.

The Sellsword
Back off, or I start breaking things I can still reach.
She cannot move her legs, but the blade is still free, and the space between them has shrunk to one bad step.
“React in shock. No one has ever resisted my magic of that caliber before. Praise and stroke her ego a bit, offer a deal. "Impressive. It seems I have misjudged you, never would I have expected to meet such a strong and fierce competitor in a rundown place like this. How about this: I came here for the bounty on your head. But it would be a shame to see such talent go to waste. Instead, join me and my hold, and we can work together. I'll let you receive the pilgrim's bounty, although I'm sure you'll find there's much more Gold working for me. What say you, battle-maiden?"”
FAILURE (Good Leadership, rolled -2)

Kalazan stills his stance, the cold fading from his fingers as he studies her against the snapped stone at her ankles. The inn feels smaller now, quieter, as if even the floorboards are listening.

Kalazan
Impressive. I misjudged you.

Kalazan
I came for the bounty on your head, but it would be a shame to waste talent like this. Join my hold, take the pilgrim's bounty, and earn far more gold working for me.

Kalazan
What do you say, battle-maiden?

The Sellsword
Battle-maiden? Hah. You have the nerve to flatter me while I am half-buried in your trick.

The Sellsword
Still... you noticed the trap, and you did not rush me. That counts for something.

The Sellsword
If I am to take coin from a commander, I want to know whether he pays in gold, or in lies.
“"I lie only to those who are foolish enough to believe them. If you stay loyal, you will see as much coin as you need." As a gesture of goodwill, I flick my wrist, dispelling the petrification spell at her ankles. "It is up to you. I have lost interesting in collecting your bounty. Work for me, join me for ale, or leave. It is up to you." I wait with arms crossed for her response.”
SUCCESS (Good Leadership, rolled +1)

Kalazan
I lie only to those foolish enough to believe them. Stay loyal, and you will see more coin than you need.
Kalazan flicks his wrist. The stone around the sellsword’s ankles fractures into dust, and her boots settle back onto the floorboards.
He folds his arms and leaves the offer hanging between them, calm as if he has already decided the answer.

The Sellsword
Hah. That is a cleaner promise than most nobles manage. You at least know how to bargain.

The Sellsword
I have buried men who paid on time and men who lied through their teeth. The liars were usually more interesting.

The Sellsword
If I take your gold, I want work that pays, food that does not kill me, and a commander who speaks plain.

The Sellsword
So. Do I hear more about this hold of yours, or are you already offering me that ale?
“I get a cheeky grin. "Really, does a warrior like you care about history? I could tell you of my hold and its old walls, but I think you and I both would rather get to real business." Pick up my staff, then order as much ale as she wants and the plain terms of the work she would do.”
SUCCESS (Good Leadership, rolled +1)

Kalazan lets a cheeky grin cut across his muzzle, then reaches down and takes up his staff. He keeps his stance easy, like the room has already stopped arguing with him.

Kalazan
Really, does a warrior like you care about history? I could tell you of my hold and its old walls, but I think you and I both would rather get to real business.
He tilts the staff once, then gives the innkeeper’s room a flat look and orders ale, as much as she wants, along with plain terms for the work. The offer lands cleanly, with no flourish left in it.

The Sellsword
That is better. Straight talk, straight pay. I can live with both.

The Sellsword
She eases her blade lower and studies him like a contract with a pulse. Not a fool, then. Good.

The Sellsword
I do escort work, guard work, and ugly work when the price is honest. I do not take pleasure in surprises, and I do not stay where coin gets delayed.

The Sellsword
If your hold keeps feed, shelter, and a captain who speaks plain, I will hear the rest. If your ale is real, I will drink to it.
Kalazan leaves Village inn common room behind and arrives at Hold Red Tide.
“"Then it seems we have a deal. I will meet with you tomorrow at noon to be my new escort--that should give you enough time to collect the pilgrim's bounty for yourself before we depart." I ready to leave with a case of ale, now that the deal is in place, finally ready to leave the inn.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Back at Hold Red Tide, the deal still feels warm in the air as Kalazan takes the ale case from the threshold and turns into the corridor. The inn scene is gone from sight, replaced by stone walls, torchlight, and the hush of home.

The Sellsword
Noon tomorrow, then. I hear plain terms, I keep plain terms.

The Sellsword
And if your hold is half as steady as your manner, I may stay longer than one escort job.
She accepts the bargain with a short nod and a sharp, businesslike smile. Her eyes flick to the ale case, then back to him, weighing comfort against caution.

Kalazan
Tomorrow at noon. The pilgrim's bounty is yours to collect before we leave.
The sellsword gives him room without being asked, and the advantage is real, not imagined. The trap is finished, the room is his to abandon, and the one thing she wanted besides coin now sits heavy in his grip.

The Sellsword
I like a commander who keeps his word. Bring me to your captain tomorrow, and let me see whether the rest of this hold matches you.
Kalazan heads out with the ale case, free of the inn at last, while her voice follows him with an easy challenge from behind.
