Your picnic is arranged beneath the nature park’s broad shade tree, the first sandwich lifted toward your mouth. Sun-warmed grass and distant birdcalls soften the city beyond the paths.
A little boy, slight and pale-faced with a small gap between his front teeth, perhaps six years old, comes running toward the blanket. His rumpled blue shirt and shorts are grass-stained, his dark curls cling to his tear-streaked face, and he keeps looking behind him.

Milo
Mommy? Daddy? Where are you?
He stops at the edge of your enormous picnic blanket, breathing hard. His eyes dart up your towering form, then toward the footpath, as though hoping familiar adults will appear.

Milo
I can't find them. I was right next to them, and then everybody moved.
The boy wipes his cheeks with both hands, smearing away some of the tears. Your sandwich remains poised in front of you while he waits, frightened and expectant.

Reunite the lost boy with his parents
Director's note
Left hand lets go of the sandwich and gestures to the boy to soothe himself
“Woah, woah, e-easy there, Little Gumball. Your panicking is gonna get you all winded. J-just breathe in and out real slowly, then you'll have the energy to speak more gently, okay?”
SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled +0)

Your left hand releases the sandwich onto the blanket, and you lift the opposite, enormous palm in a slow, gentle gesture. The boy’s frantic scent catches your attention, and hunger stirs before caution reins it in.

Jyn
Woah, woah, e-easy there, Little Gumball. Your panicking is gonna get you all winded. J-just breathe in and out real slowly, then you'll have the energy to speak more gently, okay?
The boy stares at your raised hand, then copies its steady rhythm with his own smaller one. He draws in a shaky breath, lets it out, and repeats the motion until his shoulders loosen.

Milo
In... and out. Okay. I can do that. You sound nicer when you talk slow.
His breathing settles, and he can finally stand without folding over. Still, he keeps several careful steps between himself and your huge hand, glancing toward the abandoned sandwich.

Milo
Can you help me find Mommy and Daddy now? I’ll stay right here, but don’t pick me up.
The request is calm, but the distance is a clear price for your success: he trusts your voice enough to ask for help, not your hands enough to come closer.
“I do understand why you wouldn't wanna come near a big stranger like me. I, uh, get that reaction a lot. But I want you to know, I am willing to help you find your parents, Sweetie.”
SUCCESS (Good Empathy, rolled +0)

Jyn
I understand why you wouldn’t want to come near a big stranger like me. I get that reaction a lot. But I’m willing to help you find your parents, Sweetie.
The boy studies your open hand, then your face. His fear eases, but the smell of his distress sharpens the hunger underneath your caution, making the abandoned sandwich suddenly feel very far away.

Jyn
Keep my voice gentle. Keep my hands where he can see them.
You remain planted beside the blanket instead of reaching for him, swallowing the predatory impulse and giving him the wide, visible space he asked for. The restraint costs you trust, but it also makes your offer believable.

Milo
Okay. You can help. But stay there, and we should find a park worker or a police person too, so my mom and dad know I’m safe.

Milo
They were near the fountain before everybody moved. I can show you where, if you walk behind me.
He steps onto the path and points toward the fountain, keeping the promised distance. His suspicion remains, now made explicit through his demand for an official witness, but he accepts your help and starts leading the way.
“Is the boy getting hungry himself?”
YES (Likely, rolled 14)

The boy takes another careful step along the path, then slows when his stomach gives a small, unmistakable growl. His eyes flick toward the sandwich on the blanket.

Milo
Um... I didn't eat lunch yet. Do you think I could have some of yours when we stop? Just a little bit.
He rubs his stomach, embarrassed, but keeps walking at the same cautious distance. Hunger has softened his breathing into something quieter and more ordinary than panic.

Jyn
He is hungry too.

Milo
My name is Milo, by the way. I still want to find my parents first, but I can smell that sandwich from here.
The fountain comes into view beyond the trees, surrounded by families and strolling shoppers. Milo points toward it, then glances back at the picnic with open, hopeful concern.

Milo
Maybe the park worker can help us find them, and then maybe we can come back for the sandwich?

Waves hand in a slow and gentle manner
Director's notewhole tale
Then we proceed to find the park worker, while keeping a safe, yet reasonable distance from Milo
“Well, my name is Jyn. Pleasure to meet you, Milo. Let's go find the worker, Little Muffin. I'll be sure to keep my distance as we're walking.”
SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled +4)

Jyn
Well, my name is Jyn. Pleasure to meet you, Milo. Let's go find the worker, Little Muffin. I'll keep my distance while we walk.
Jyn’s lifts her right hand, then waves it in a slow, gentle manner toward Milo. She follows several paces behind him, keeping her broad steps measured and her hands visible.

Milo
Nice to meet you, Jyn. You’re doing good with the distance. Little Muffin is okay, too.
The sandwich’s savory smell follows them, and hunger keeps tugging at Jyn’s attention. She suppresses the sharper impulse beneath it, focusing on Milo’s small blue shirt and steady pace instead.
Near the fountain, a middle-aged woman, medium-built with warm brown skin and hazel eyes over a navy polo shirt beneath her vest, in a green park vest steps from beside a map kiosk. Her brown braid rests over one shoulder, and a silver whistle hangs at her collar.

Marisol
There you are, sweetheart. I’m Marisol. Your parents came looking for you a few minutes ago, and I know exactly where they went.
Milo’s shoulders drop with relief. Marisol points toward the staffed information booth, where a family waits beside the counter, giving Jyn and Milo a clear route and an official escort.
“Are Milo’s parents waiting at the information booth?”
YES, AND MORE (VeryLikely, rolled 16)

At the information booth, a worried middle-aged man in a tan jacket and a tired-looking middle-aged woman in a red cardigan wait beside the counter, scanning the path. The moment they spot Milo, both straighten.

Milo
Mom! Dad! Marisol found me!

Milo's parents
Milo! We’re right here!
Milo stops several paces from them, then looks back toward Jyn and Marisol before hurrying to the counter. His parents meet him there without crossing into Jyn’s space.

Marisol
He’s safe, and he stayed with Jyn while we came here. I had the booth alert the other park workers already, so everyone stopped searching the wrong paths.

Milo
Jyn kept her distance like she promised. She helped me breathe, too. Can we get her sandwich now?

Milo's parents
Thank you for bringing him back safely. We’d like to thank you properly, if that’s all right.
Director's note
I blush at their gratitude, one hand placed on my cheek, both ears dropping to the sides
Director's note
Turns around 90 degrees to the right, pauses for a bit, then looks back at the family
“Oh, t-there's no need to thank me. I-I was just altering my job as mall security to help a sweet little boy find his parents. I-I'll just be on my merry way to get back to my picnic lunch. Although...your son was rather, uh...hungry. Perhaps I can, uh, share a decent portion of my goods with all of you? I-I-I think it's a nice way to celebrate...s-s-supposedly.”
FAILURE (Good Conversation, rolled +0)

Jyn
Oh, t-there’s no need to thank me. I was just doing my job. I’m heading back to my picnic, but your son seemed hungry, so perhaps I could share some of my food with all of you to celebrate?
Jyn blushes, places one hand against her cheek, and lets both ears droop sideways. Her stomach growls at the thought of the food, while the sharper instinct beneath her hunger makes offering it feel safer than keeping it near Milo.
She turns ninety degrees toward the path, pauses, then looks back at the family. The sandwich waits on the blanket, its scent making her always-hungry attention linger there.

Milo's parents
That’s very kind, Jyn, but we brought Milo a snack, and we’ve already eaten. Please don’t give up your lunch for us.

Milo
I’m okay, Jyn. Mom packed crackers in her bag. But I could walk back with you while you eat, if you want.

Milo's parents
We can bring him along and keep the same distance. That way you can enjoy your picnic, and he can have his own snack.
The offer leaves Jyn’s lunch untouched and gives her a clear alternative: Milo can eat what his family brought while she returns to her blanket without sharing her food.
