The Earth Wakes Beneath Us

The cellar floor jerks beneath Jackyl Lyle’s boots. Dust shakes loose from the beams, and a hollow metallic thud rolls up from under the earth.

The Inquisitor snaps their blade free and stares down at the dirt, face gone pale. The child shrinks tighter behind the crates.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

It was never outside. Something is waking under us.

A ridge of soil bulges between the floorboards. The old root cellar groans as if something below is prying upward with slow, patient force.

Jackyl Lyle

Jackyl Lyle

The ground is moving.

The Inquisitor shifts to put themselves between the heaving earth and the child, weapon raised. Jackyl stands at the center of the cramped room, with the sealed door behind him and the rising threat beneath.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

If it breaks through, keep it off the child. I will hold this side.

✓ Quest Accepted

Stop the thing rising from beneath the cellar

✓ Quest Accepted

Get the child to safety

I drive my blade into the bulging soil to pin whatever is beneath.

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled -1)

The Earth Wakes Beneath Us

Jackyl drives his blade down into the bulging seam. The sword bites deep, and the mound of soil shudders under the steel, pinned for a heartbeat.

A wet cracking ripples through the floorboards. Dirt sprays between the planks, and the heave underfoot falters into a strained, grinding tremor.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

Good. Keep it there.

The Inquisitor lunges in beside him, one boot skidding in the loose earth as they brace their blade over the rupture, shoulder tight to Jackyl’s.

The Child

The Child

It is coming up!

The floor gives a sharp, ugly pop. Boards bow outward, and a dark gap opens beneath the sword, breathing cold air up into the cellar.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

The promise still stands. We do not leave this child behind.

I keep the blade pinned and shout for the child to stay back

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled -1)

The Earth Wakes Beneath Us

Jackyl keeps the sword driven in and plants his weight behind it. The blade holds the seam shut for a breath, while the floor shivers under his boots.

Jackyl Lyle

Jackyl Lyle

Stay back!

The child flinches deeper behind the crates, but does not rush forward. Loose soil trickles into the widening crack.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

Hear him. Stay behind the crates.

Then the boards give way with a sudden drop. A whole section of floor sinks inward, and the gap opens into a dark, slanting passage below.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

The ground is going. Jackyl, with me.

Cold air pours up from the new opening, carrying the smell of wet stone. The defensive line breaks as the cellar floor surrenders beneath them.

I do as the inquisitor says and stay with him, ready for what comes next.

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -2)

The Earth Wakes Beneath Us

Jackyl shifts with the Inquisitor, keeping his stance tight at the lip of the opening. The floor groans under both of them, and dust sifts from the beams overhead.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

Hold here. If it moves again, we meet it together.

Jackyl Lyle

Jackyl Lyle

The crack is wider now, and the passage below is still opening.

A cold draught rises from the slanted dark, tugging at Jackyl’s cape. Beside him, the Inquisitor’s grip tightens, one hand still angled toward the child’s hiding place.

The Child

The Child

I can hear something under there.

Then the boards near Jackyl’s boots sink another handspan with a crack. The defensive line gives way, forcing them both to shuffle back from the edge as roots scrape free from the earth.

I shield the child and back away

SUCCESS (Superb Athletics, rolled +1)

The Earth Wakes Beneath Us

Jackyl gets his body between the child and the widening gap, then gives ground in a controlled step. The Inquisitor mirrors him, blade out, and the pair retreat together as the broken floor shudders under their weight.

The Child

The Child

It is moving again.

The last of the boards at the edge fold inward with a hard crack. The cellar no longer feels like a room, only a rim around a black throat cut through the earth.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

Stay back. By the promise I made, I will not leave you to it.

Roots snap free below, and a heavier surge of pressure rolls up through the opening. The ground itself gives way under the defense line, forcing it to collapse.

Jackyl Lyle

Jackyl Lyle

The passage below is open now.

Dust floods the air as the floor drops another span, and the three of them are pushed toward the only stable footing left. The cellar has turned into a broken descent, and whatever wakes beneath it has chosen the way forward.

Is the thing coming up through the floor?

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 51)

The Earth Wakes Beneath Us

A massive, chitinous limb punches through the loose soil of the floor, its jagged tip hooking into the cellar beam with sickening force.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

It is not just breaking in, Jackyl. It is climbing out.

Jackyl Lyle

Jackyl Lyle

The creature is not beneath the floor anymore, it is pulling itself into the room.

I strike at the climbing limb

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +2)

The Earth Wakes Beneath Us

Jackyl’s blade bites into the climbing limb. The chitin splits with a sharp crack, and the thing jerks back, scraping loose earth across the broken floor.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

Good. Keep it bleeding, Jackyl.

The limb thrashes once, then the cellar floor groans under its weight. More boards sag inward, and the jagged hole widens toward the storage wall.

The Child

The Child

It is getting in...
