Jackyl Lyle bursts into the root-cellar, sword up, and the lamplight catches damp stone, hanging roots, and toppled sacks of turnips.
Behind a stack of crates, a child shrinks low, half-hidden. A robed inquisitor has one arm thrown across them, trying to keep them still.

The Inquisitor
Hold, knight. It was a ruse. I only meant to keep the child quiet.
The cellar door shudders. Something outside drags clawed weight across the wood, slow and testing, and dust sifts from the frame.

Jackyl Lyle
The door is the real threat.

The Inquisitor
Listen to me, please. If that thing gets in, it will take the child first.
The child bites back a sob and grips a crate edge with white knuckles. The inquisitor stays between them and the door, terror plain in every tense line.

The Inquisitor
Will you help us, or force me to choose?
✓ Quest Accepted
Protect the child from the thing at the cellar door
“I stand beside the inquisitor and ready my sword for whatever breaks through.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +0)

Jackyl Lyle steps in beside the inquisitor, shoulder to shoulder, sword angled toward the trembling door.
The inquisitor jerks a breath, then shifts with him, drawing the child tighter behind both adults.

The Inquisitor
Then we stand together. If it breaks through, I will hold the child. You meet the door.
Wood groans loud enough to shake dust from the lintel. A pale crack opens along the seam, and cold air hisses into the cellar.

The Child
Please let the knight be enough.
The inquisitor’s free hand hovers, uncertain, then presses flat to the stone as if bracing the whole room by force of will.

The Inquisitor
If it comes through, do not let it reach the crates.
“I brace the door and strike the first claw”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +2)

Jackyl Lyle drives his blade into the widening gap as the door shudders inward. A black claw scrapes the iron tip, then jerks back with a crack of splintering wood.
The inquisitor snaps to the opening and rams their shoulder against the door, stealing the creature’s push. Dust bursts down in a choking veil.
Outside, something hisses and recoils. Cold light spills through the break, but the hand that reaches in finds only steel and splinters.

The Inquisitor
Now, knight, keep it out!
The child flinches behind the crates, then stays low as the gap holds. The first rush is checked, and the cellar keeps its shape for one tense breath.
From the shattered seam comes a dragging scrape, patient and searching, as if the thing is testing for another way in.
“I keep the door barred with my sword”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +0)

Jackyl Lyle holds the blade steady as the door bows again, and the wedge of steel gives the cracking wood a spine. The seam stops widening.

The Inquisitor
Keep it there. I have the child.
The inquisitor shifts off the door, one arm sweeping back to shield the crates, the other hand free at last. Their stance changes from brute force to defense.

The Child
It is holding. It is actually holding.
Outside, the scraping drifts along the splinters, then pauses at the blade. Cold light trembles through the crack, thin as a knife edge.

The Inquisitor
We stop it here, knight, or it finds the child.
For the moment, the door stays barred, the child stays hidden, and the two defenders stand together at the breach as something unseen tests the wood from the other side.
“I brace the door and hold the line”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled -1)

Jackyl Lyle bears down on the sword, and the split wood finally yields to his strength without the seam flying apart. The brace holds. A harsh snap answers from outside, and a sliver of the door tears free under the pressure.
The inquisitor flinches at the crack, then moves with him, shoulder to shoulder at the breach instead of apart from it. Their hand closes over the child’s hidden shoulder, steadying, not dragging.

The Inquisitor
Together, then. Hold here.
The thing on the other side scrapes back hard enough to shake dust from the beams. Cold light floods the splintered seam, and a jagged shard bites Jackyl Lyle’s gauntlet, drawing a thin line of blood.

The Child
They are not leaving me.
The door still stands, but the cellar is no longer quiet. The shared defense is real now, and whatever waits outside knows exactly where they are.
“I let the inquisitor hold the door while I drive my sword through the crack to injure the beast.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +2)

Jackyl Lyle slides his blade into the splintered seam and drives. The point bites through the crack with a wet, jolting resistance, and the thing outside recoils with a harsh, choking snarl.
The inquisitor keeps the child pinned safely behind the crates, shoulders locked, as the door shudders under the creature's weight. Cold light slashes across their face, then falters.

The Inquisitor
Again, Jackyl. It is hurting.
Jackyl Lyle wrenches the sword free, and dark wetness spatters the threshold. The pressure on the door breaks at last, turning the pounding into retreating scrapes.

The Child
Is it gone?
The cellar falls into a tense, ringing quiet. The inquisitor does not look away from the door, but their hand stays on the child's shoulder, steady and sure.

The Inquisitor
For this moment, yes. We held together.
