Gribbit’s oath-mark ignites again, brighter than before. His arm jerks toward the gate, pointing beyond it to a sunken crypt where stones have settled like broken teeth.

Gribbit
There. It is not merely summoning the dead. Something beneath that stone is answering me.
The goblin gathers his lacquered trade satchel and crosses the graveyard, leaving the fallen ambushers undisturbed among the silver grass. Their silence does not break.

Gribbit
Stay close, exorcist, or stay behind. Either way, do not touch the threshold until I open it.
At the gate, Gribbit kneels and scatters small copper charms in a half-circle. The oath-mark pulls his fingers toward a buried sigil beneath the weeds.

Gribbit
The ward is old, but it still knows its duty. Let us see what has been calling through it.
He presses his marked palm to the earth. Stone groans below the gate, and a narrow stairway reveals itself, descending into darkness while the graveyard remains still behind Caedric.

walks down the stairs
Director's note
pulls out a torch

Caedric descends the narrow stair with the torch held high, its flame painting restless gold across damp stone. Gribbit follows close behind, clutching his satchel.
The opened passage tightens beneath the graveyard. Roots pierce the ceiling, and pale beads of moisture tremble whenever something far below shifts against the earth.

Gribbit
Keep the torch above the steps. Darkness is hiding a second ward, and it dislikes being overlooked.
At the stair's foot, the torchlight reveals a circular chamber choked with old offerings: cracked prayer bowls, rusted chains, and feathers blackened by age.

Caedric Thornmere
The air is warmer below the crypt than above it.

Gribbit
There. Beneath the offerings. That is the answering mouth. Do not let it speak your name.
The torch flame bends toward a sealed stone at the chamber's center. A thin red line appears around its edges, pulsing in time with the oath-mark on Gribbit's palm.
“"This must be the ritual site for what is releasing the evil in this area" Tries to gain some insight as do what kind of magic is in the area”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

Caedric raises the torch over the sealed stone and studies the offerings, chains, feathers, and red line. Their arrangement forms a deliberate ritual circle, not a burial seal.

Caedric Thornmere
The warmth is fed by magic beneath the stone, and the sigil carries two distinct authorities.
As Caedric traces the pattern with his gaze, the torchlight separates its workings: corpse-binding threads twist around an older oath, while a false consecration masks the whole design.

Gribbit
Necromancy first, but commanded through infernal oath-magic. The consecration is counterfeit, painted over it to make corruption answer like worship.
The red line pulses beneath the torch, revealing a narrow channel leading from the stone toward the graveyard above. The site is releasing a bound command, not merely awakening corpses.

Gribbit
This is Valek's signature, or a servant's imitation of it. Break the oath beneath the false blessing, and the release will cease.
Gribbit's marked palm tightens, answering the buried magic. The chamber's heat gathers around the sealed stone while every blackened feather turns toward Caedric's codex.

Learn what Gribbit's oath-mark is calling through the ward
“Gribbit, what is the ward telling you, and is there any spell I know that could stop this process?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +1)

Caedric Thornmere
Gribbit, what is the ward telling you, and is there any spell I know that could stop this process?

Gribbit
It tells me the command is leaving this chamber through the red channel, carried upward to bind more corpses. Its anchor is beneath the false blessing.
The pattern settles into clarity beneath the torch. The older oath forms a knot below the stone, while the counterfeit consecration merely conceals its shape.

Gribbit
You know the rite. Oath-Cleave, followed by a true consecration. Sever the infernal knot first, then seal the channel with sanctified oil or prayer.

Caedric Thornmere
Oath-Cleave can break the command without disturbing the dead above.
Memory supplies the missing sequence: ash across the false sigil, the codex opened to its purifying leaf, and a spoken severance directed at the oath's knot.

Gribbit
Yes. That spell will stop the release. I can hold the ward's attention while you place the ash and speak the severance. The process ends when the knot breaks.
Gribbit spreads his marked hand over the stone. The red channel brightens, exposing the hidden knot beneath the counterfeit blessing and making the rite's target unmistakable.

“I spread the ash and open my codex to oath-cleave, I practice the words in my head silently before I gently rub some ash into a circle on my forehead, opening a mystical third eye that acts as a window in to my cleric abilities. with my powers ignited I attempt to break the oath in a safe way”
FAILURE (Mediocre Magic, rolled +1)

Caedric reaches for the blackthorn ash, but the needed pinch is not within his grasp. The purple codex is absent as well, still beyond the sealed ritual circle and Gribbit's satchel.
He silently rehearses Oath-Cleave, then rubs the remaining dust across his forehead instead. A dim mystical eye opens there, revealing clerical currents as branching threads beneath the stone.

Gribbit
Do not force the severance. You lack the ash and codex, but your sight has found the true knot.
Caedric directs the awakened sight toward the oath and attempts to break it safely. The false blessing splits into pale layers, but the infernal knot holds fast and the red channel flares.

Gribbit
There. The lower strand is the release line. If I draw the ward upward, you can cut that strand without touching the buried dead.
The failed rite leaves the knot exposed through Caedric's third eye, no longer safely hidden by counterfeit consecration. Gribbit's palm trembles over the stone as the revealed strand strains toward him.
“Gribbit, I'm going to cut it with a low pulse of my Eldritch Blast, hold still. After I shall burn some incense to keep any resurrection energy trapped in this crypt”
FAILURE (Mediocre Magic, rolled +1)

Caedric Thornmere
Gribbit, I’m going to cut it with a low pulse of my Eldritch Blast. Hold still. Afterward, I’ll burn incense to keep any resurrection energy trapped in this crypt.

Gribbit
Then aim for the lower strand, not the knot itself. I will hold the ward’s attention. Do not let the pulse climb into my mark.
Gribbit braces his marked palm above the stone and draws the ward’s red current upward. Caedric gathers a restrained pulse, its dim violet light trembling beside the exposed strand.
The Eldritch Blast strikes low, clipping the release line instead of severing it. The strand buckles, then hooks around the false blessing, trapping the command in a tight loop beneath the stone.

Gribbit
It did not break, but now the channel is folded against itself. The resurrection current cannot rise while that loop holds. We have a safer cut exposed.
Caedric reaches for incense among his ritual tools, but no bundle answers his search. The crypt’s warm air thickens around the trapped current, which remains contained only by the bent strand.

Gribbit
No incense, then. Keep the loop intact while we find another seal. The false blessing is now separated enough to reveal what supports it.
Beneath the stone, a second thread glimmers through the counterfeit consecration, narrow as a hair and leading toward the chamber’s blackened offerings.
“Gribbit, I'm going to follow the the thread to its source and extinguish it once and for all! Hold true my friend, this will all be over in a few minuetes”
FAILURE (Mediocre Magic, rolled +1)

Caedric Thornmere
Gribbit, I’m going to follow the thread to its source and extinguish it once and for all. Hold true, my friend. This will be over in a few minutes.
Caedric descends the chamber’s short inner stair, torch raised in his left hand while the purple codex rests open in his right. Its flame reveals the hair-thin thread slipping beneath the blackened offerings.
He traces the thread with restrained magic and drives a purifying pulse toward its source. The current bends sharply, dragging the false blessing after it like a cloak caught on thorns.
The pulse extinguishes the thread’s visible glow, but not its root. Instead, the blackened offerings split apart, and the counterfeit consecration collapses into a narrow ring around a concealed stone stair.

Gribbit
You missed the source, but you stripped away its disguise. The supporting thread descends there, beneath the chamber. Follow it, and you may sever the blessing from its foundation.

Caedric Thornmere
The source lies below the offerings, not beneath the sealed stone.
The trapped red loop tightens behind Caedric, no longer feeding upward but still quivering against the exposed stair. Warm air rises from below, carrying the dry scent of ash and old incense.
“Im going to make my way down the corridor, searching for the source, with hands ready for anything, I cant help but feeling like im falling into a trap”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +2)

Caedric descends the concealed stair with the torch held high, his free hand poised near the steel-plated whip. The passage narrows around him, its walls damp and warm.

Caedric Thornmere
The thread is guiding me, not merely leading downward.
He searches each step and seam before placing his weight. Fine ash lies undisturbed across the stones, but three shallow grooves curve beneath it, forming a ward meant to catch a careless stride.
Caedric follows the magical thread around the grooves rather than crossing them. His torchlight reveals a concealed alcove below, where black candles surround a fist-sized stone engraved with a serpent devouring its own tail.

Gribbit
There is the foundation. The blessing is anchored to that stone, and the trap is only its outer jaw. Do not touch it with bare flesh.
The hair-thin thread terminates inside the engraved stone, its pale current now fully visible. Beneath the serpent mark, a narrow seam outlines a removable shard, giving Caedric a clear source to purge.
