Another year passes. Nate and Yumi, both eighteen now, stand outside the academy’s sealed final-examination wing in formal candidate bands, their completed survey ship assigned below.
The Academy Instructor
Graduation requires three parts: a live mission simulation, a technical defense of your vessel, and coordinated command performance.
The academy instructor stands before the access seal with their examination slate. Beyond it, observation galleries and exam hangars wait under bright diagnostic lights.
Yumi
We know the ship, the routes, and each other’s working habits. That should count for something when the simulation starts.
The Academy Instructor
It counts, but it will not excuse uncertainty. Licensed survey pilots must explain every choice while making it under pressure.
The sealed doors separate with a quiet hydraulic sigh, revealing an observation deck above the hangars. Their survey ship rests beneath the examination gantries, marked for launch.
Yumi
There it is. Our final review begins the moment we step onto that deck. Ready to show them what we built?
