The tower squats at the forest edge, broken-black against a bruised sky. Rot and sharp ozone drift from its cracked stones as Izalette Reinloft slips through a gap in the outer wall.
Inside, a single chamber waits beneath a caved roof. A rough table, a bloodied blanket, clay bowls, herbs, and a sputtering lamp make a desperate nest of light.
A captive lies chained to a post, pale and barely moving. Beside them, The Healer hunches close, hands pressed hard to a wrapped wound.

The Healer
Hush. Gods, do not speak. If they hear you, we are both dead.
From the upper floors comes a frantic scratching, fast and uneven, like nails dragged over old wood.

The Healer
You are not with the slavers. Good. Then help me, or bar the stair and pray whatever crawls above stays hungry.

Izalette Reinloft
The stairs are the only clean way up.
The Healer lifts one blood-smeared hand, pointing past the table toward the dark stairwell as the scratching stops for a single, listening beat.

Protect the healer from the unseen force
“I draw my blade and move to stand between the healer and the stairwell.”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Weapons, rolled +0)

Izalette’s rapier leaves its sheath in a whisper of steel. She steps in front of the healer and plants herself toward the stair, a thin, lethal line between the dark above and the lamp below.

The Healer
Thank the gods. Keep it there. If it comes down, do not let it touch the captive.
The scratching returns, no longer aimless. It circles the stair opening, slow and testing, as if something has found the shape of her resistance and is measuring it.

Izalette Reinloft
The sound is above the first landing.
Dust sifts from the broken ceiling. The lamp flame bends hard toward the stairwell, and the chained captive gives one shallow, shivering breath.

The Healer
I can carry them, if you can hold that stair for one more moment. Tell me now, or I try alone.
“I've got this. How long do you need to heal him enough to move?”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Izalette Reinloft
I’ve got this. How long do you need to make him movable?
Izalette keeps the stair in her line of sight, blade steady. The healer drags in a breath, then leans over the captive with quick, practiced hands.

The Healer
Two minutes, if the gods are kind. Less, if he wakes badly and starts thrashing. I need the strip from my satchel and my knife.
They do not look at the stair when they speak, but their wrist keeps tightening whenever the floor above creaks. The captive’s eyelids flutter once, then settle.

The Healer
If she holds it, I can bind the leg and get an arm under his shoulder. If she cannot, I leave the splint and pray.
A soft knock runs down through the boards overhead, testing, patient as a fingernail on a lid. The lamp flame bows, then steadies in the draft.

The Healer
Keep your steel ready, Izalette. When I say move, we go at once, or he stays here and dies with the tower.
“Stab tip of rapier through the cracks between rafters where the dust drifts down from.”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Weapons, rolled +1)

Izalette slips the rapier point into a hairline gap in the rafters. Wood gives with a dry tick, and the blade vanishes past the dust-shedding seam.
Above, something jerks back hard enough to shake powder loose from the boards. A thin, wet hiss leaks down through the stairwell, angry and startled.

Izalette Reinloft
The crack runs deeper than the dust line.
The healer freezes with the knife in hand, then looks up at Izalette with sudden, sharp hope. Their shoulders loosen by a fingerbreadth.

The Healer
Yes. Hold it there. It feels that.
A heavy scrape answers from above, not a strike now but a retreating drag, as if whatever prowls the tower has shifted its footing away from the stair opening.

The Healer
Move the lamp closer. If it’s distracted, I can get him up.
“Pick up lamp by the handle in my off hand and hold it closer for the healer.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)

Izalette catches the lamp by its handle with her free hand and lifts it toward the healer. Warm gold climbs the broken stairwell, chasing shadow off the captive’s face and lighting the dust between the beams.

The Healer
Good. Keep it there. I can see the bindings now.
The healer leans in, fast and practiced, then stiffens as a faint tapping starts overhead, not at the stair opening but farther back, above the room’s far wall.

The Healer
It has moved. Izalette, with me, now. We do not have much time.
The captive is tugged upright under the healer’s arm, limp but breathing. The lamp’s circle swings with Izalette’s hand, and in that wobbling light the nearest chain link shows a fresh split.
Above them, the scratching returns with a new rhythm, circling toward the chamber instead of the stair. The healer looks from the broken chain to Izalette, ready to move if she will carry the light ahead.

Lamp
“I flick my chin towards the door to signal the healer to take the captive and get out.”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Izalette tips her chin toward the door and the healer catches it at once. No words are needed. The healer tightens their grip under the captive’s shoulders and shifts their weight toward the stairs.
The captive is hauled fully clear of the floor, head lolling against the healer’s chest. Izalette’s lamp steadies the route ahead, its light cutting a bright lane through the drifting dust.

The Healer
Move. Quietly. If it comes through the roof, do not stop for me.
They break for the stairwell together. Above the far wall, the tapping stops dead, as if something has heard the shift and gone still.
Then the tower answers with a dry crack from the upper chamber. A strip of dark plaster shears loose and falls between the beams, blocking part of the room behind them.
The healer freezes only long enough to glance back, then forces the captive onward into the stair mouth. The way out is open now, but the chamber behind them is changing.
“Backs towards the stairs with rapier and lamp in hand.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -1)

Izalette gives ground in silence, stepping backward into the stairwell without breaking her guard. Her lamp stays high, her rapier stays low, and the healer uses the light to keep the captive moving.
The last sliver of the chamber falls away behind them as the tower mouth narrows. Dust streams down the stair shaft, and the cracked plaster above sifts again, but the stairs hold.

The Healer
Keep with me. One more landing, then we are out.
The unseen thing answers from overhead with a heavy thud through the beams, then a scrape that tracks their descent along the wall beside the stairs. The whole tower feels it has turned to listen.

Izalette Reinloft
The stairs are still clear.
Below, the stair turns toward the ground floor at last. The healer shifts the captive’s weight, and the limp body slips closer to the threshold of safety, or disaster, as the echoing scrape stops just above them.

The Healer
Izalette, now, do we run for the door or bar it behind us?
“We bar the door behind us once we're through. We can shift some of the rubble outside to keep the door closed.”
SUCCESS (Fair Strength, rolled +3)

Izalette reaches the lower landing first and turns the collapse on its head. She and the healer heave the loose blocks out through the doorway, then drag them back across the threshold in a grinding spill of stone.
The door slams inward under the weight, then stops dead as the rubble bites the jamb. Dust blooms into the entryway and the stair behind them is cut off.

The Healer
It holds. We can move.
Cold forest air rushes in through the open outer arch beyond the blocked door. For the first time, the tower sounds far away.
The healer shifts the captive higher and starts for the outer path, toward the trees and the camp beyond them.
As they cross the threshold, a thin wedge of moonlight catches a buried metal ring in the rubble, a hidden anchor set into the old masonry, like the tower once meant to keep something in.

The Healer
Not a prison for us now. Move.
