Vinlandhiem Beyond the Clouds

Ryrronken climbs through the thinning cloud, his bronze wings carrying him above the weather. Far below, the merchant vessel becomes a pale fleck, still steering west across the heaving sea.

The crippled Northkin raider dwindles behind, its damaged mast leaning against the empty sky. Its pirates remain aboard, while the merchant crew sails on without any way to answer the dragon overhead.

The sea is endless beneath the clouds.

Hours pass in the cold brightness above the cloud tops. Ryrronken keeps the merchant ship as a moving point below, adjusting his course whenever wind and distance draw him wide.

Then the western horizon breaks. A dark, unfamiliar coastline rises beyond the glittering water, uneven and forested beneath a clearer sky. No harbor fire, sail, or watchtower marks its shore.

The merchant vessel continues toward that distant land, far beneath him. Between cloud and coast, the first visible edge of Vinlandhiem waits in silence, offering no sign of who claims it.

Director's note

I scout the coastline ahead of the merchant ship, keeping out visual site of the humans

Vinlandhiem Beyond the Clouds

Ryrronken veers ahead of the merchant ship, climbing into the bright western air until the vessel slips behind the curve of the cloud bank. From below, he becomes only another shadow among the scattered vapors.

He follows the coastline rather than the open water. White beaches appear between dark wooded stretches, while narrow channels wind inland beneath the trees. No smoke rises from the shore.

Ryrronken

Ryrronken

The coast offers no harbor or watchtower.

Ryrronken drops lower behind a long bank of cloud, keeping the land broad beneath his left wing and the approaching ship far behind. Wind carries the scent of wet earth and unfamiliar forests.

Ahead, the beach bends around a sheltered inlet. Driftwood lies scattered above the tide line, but no footprints, boats, fences, or cut timber disturb the pale sand.

He circles once beyond the inlet, hidden from the merchant crew by distance and cloud. The wooded coastline remains quiet as the ship continues west toward Vinlandhiem.

Land at the sheltered inlet and investigate this strange new land

Vinlandhiem Beyond the Clouds

Ryrronken glides ahead along the coast, keeping low behind the cloud bank. The merchant ship remains hidden behind him, its course no longer guiding his movements.

He turns inland over the sheltered inlet and descends toward the pale sand. His broad shadow crosses the beach only after the surrounding woods have proved empty.

Bronze claws touch down above the tide line, pressing shallow marks into wet sand. Wind moves through the dark trees, carrying damp earth, resin, and distant birdsong.

Ryrronken

The beach is untouched, but the inlet could shelter a landing.

Ryrronken folds his great wings close and surveys the shore. Driftwood has gathered beneath the trees, while freshwater trickles from a narrow channel toward the sea.

He follows the channel a short distance inland, moving between trunks and low branches. No cut marks, tracks, smoke, or built shelter interrupt the wilderness.

Beyond the trees, the land rises gently toward open meadow and distant wooded slopes. The inlet remains behind him, quiet and defensible beneath the western sky.

using my magic, transform into a great deer stag

“I conceal myself and watch the coastline”

SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled -1)

Vinlandhiem Beyond the Clouds

Ryrronken slips beneath the trees and settles into a hollow between roots and fern. His bronze scales vanish behind shadow and damp leaves while he watches the empty coastline.

The sheltered inlet lies below, pale sand curving around quiet water. Beyond it, the forest edge and open meadow show no boats, fires, footprints, or moving figures.

He draws the strange power within him inward. Bronze scales tighten and flow into russet hide, wings folding away as his great body reshapes into a tall stag.

The transformation leaves broad hoofprints pressed into the soft earth, and one antler catches a low branch with a dry crack. Ryrronken freezes beneath the foliage.

Ryrronken

Ryrronken

The coastline remains empty.

As the sound fades, he lowers his stag head and resumes the watch. From this concealment, he can survey the inlet, beach, and inland rise without exposing the distant ship or himself.

“I circle the inlet without exposing myself, surveying the land”

SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +1)

Vinlandhiem Beyond the Clouds

Ryrronken moves through the fern and root-shadow as a great stag, placing each hoof where damp leaves will not crack. The trees conceal his antlers and russet hide from the open beach.

He circles the inlet beneath the forest edge, keeping trunks between himself and the water. From each angle, he studies the pale sand, the channel mouth, and the empty curve of shore.

The sheltered water is deep enough for a small landing, with firm ground above the tide line. Driftwood offers scant cover, while the surrounding trees could hide a camp from anyone approaching by sea.

Ryrronken

Ryrronken

No tracks lead inland from the beach.

He completes the circuit without showing himself. The inlet remains empty of people, boats, smoke, and cut timber, while meadowland beyond the trees opens toward low wooded slopes.

Ryrronken settles again beneath the foliage, now knowing the shore's approaches and the channel's course. The merchant ship remains unseen behind the coastline, and no claimant challenges this quiet ground.

“Are their any Animals beyond the wooded slopes?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 60)

Vinlandhiem Beyond the Clouds

Beyond the wooded slopes, movement stirs among the grass. A small herd of wild deer grazes beneath scattered trees, their ears turning toward every forest sound.

Ryrronken

Ryrronken

The animals have found water and open grazing ground.

A change in the wind carries Ryrronken's unfamiliar scent across the rise. The deer startle together, white tails flashing as they break toward the meadow.

Their hooves drum through the grass and scatter loose stones down the slope. The sudden noise travels across the quiet inlet, making the hidden shore less hidden than before.

At the herd's rear, one young deer stumbles, recovers, and follows the others into taller cover. No predator appears, but the animals now avoid the wooded edge entirely.

Beyond them, the slopes rise into deeper forest where more movement flickers between trunks. The land holds game, but its creatures are alert, and their alarm has carried far.

“I stay hidden and walk along the coastline”

FAILURE (Good Stealth, rolled -1)

Vinlandhiem Beyond the Clouds

Ryrronken keeps his russet stag body beneath the forest edge and walks along the coastline, using trunks and brush to break his outline from the open beach.

The route narrows where the inlet's bank drops toward the tide. His hooves press into damp sand, and the next step sends a small shelf of pebbles skittering toward the water.

The sound is slight, but the wild deer on the rise lift their heads together. Their alarm carries across the meadow, and several turn toward the tree line instead of grazing.

Ryrronken halts among the roots. Behind him, his hoofprints mark the wet margin in a clear line, while ahead the beach bends into open view beneath the western sky.

Ryrronken

Ryrronken

The beach will expose my trail.

A narrow game path appears beneath the trees, climbing away from the sand toward the meadow's far side. It offers cover and a higher view of the coastline, but leaves the water unseen.

The failed concealment has made the shoreline route unsafe to repeat unnoticed. The hidden path remains open, leading inland around the bend and toward ground from which the coast can be watched.
