The Leader
Dismissed. Clear the lower rooms, bar the eastern stair, and send no one to me unless the eastern house answers.
The woman behind the screen bows and withdraws with the night group, leaving the leader alone above them. He climbs guarded stairways through lanternlit galleries, his authority opening each passage.
Chan follows the lingering arane trail through cedar smoke and lamp oil, crossing roof shadows until he reaches a flared rooftop edge beneath the castle’s highest chambers.

Chan Hoa
The upper openings overlook the entire chamber.
Through the high openings lies a vast dojo-like room, its polished floor surrounded by scrolls, lacquered seals, ancestral weapons, and clan relics. The leader, a middle-aged man with a broad build, close-cropped black hair, a square weathered face, and dark crimson robes kneels alone at a writing table.

The Leader
Perfect. Every stroke carries the old blood. No one in Kanto writes this hand better.
He drinks heavily between lines, then writes in Kanto script and older ancestral calligraphy. His brush wobbles across the paper as he grunts with drunken confidence, unaware how uneven the characters appear.

“I let his staff walk off and then i cast silence on him”
SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +3)

Chan waits beneath the high opening as the last attendants retreat beyond the galleries. Their footsteps fade, leaving the crimson-robed leader alone with his papers and drink.
He draws a silent sign through the air. The spell settles over the leader and the writing table, swallowing brush-scrape, breath, and every sound within its unseen boundary.
The crimson-robed leader opens his mouth, but no voice emerges. His startled cup strikes the table without a sound.
The leader rises sharply, gesturing toward the high openings and the surrounding relics. His alarm remains trapped inside the silence, unable to reach the guarded galleries.
The muted disturbance gives Chan a sudden advantage: beneath the table, a loose floorboard shows a concealed stair descending toward the eastern chambers.

Chan Hoa
The silence holds, and the hidden stair is unguarded.
The leader clutches his unfinished letter and scans the room without seeing Chan. Beyond him, the concealed stair waits in shadow, its first steps already exposed.

“When his back is turned i lunge down and assassinate him”
SUCCESS (Fair Ninjutsu, rolled -1)

When the leader turns toward the high openings, Chan drops through the opening and crosses the dojo in one controlled, silent lunge.
The ninjato passes cleanly into the the leader before he can turn. Chan catches him as his knees give way, keeping the death within the spell’s mute boundary.
The leader’s hand claws once at the writing table, scattering wet ink across the unfinished letter. His body slackens, and the room’s only authority ends without a cry.

Chan Hoa
The hidden stair remains open.
Chan lowers the dead leader beside the table and withdraws the blade. His landing catches the loose floorboard, which snaps sharply beneath his weight.
The broken board lies beyond the spell’s boundary. From the galleries outside, distant footsteps stop, followed by the faint scrape of a guard turning toward the sound.
Inside the sealed silence, the eastern stair waits exposed beneath the table, while the leader’s blood-darkened letter remains abandoned beside his cooling hand.
“I take his ear as proof for my clan, i loot him abruptly and cast my self into a bird to flee”
SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +2)

Chan swiftly removes one ear from the dead leader as clan proof, wrapping it in a strip of crimson robe before the silent spell can fade.
He searches the body with abrupt efficiency, taking the lacquered seal, coin purse, a ring of eastern keys, and the unfinished letter from the writing table.

Chan Hoa
The seal and letter identify the eastern house.
Outside the spell’s boundary, guards hurry toward the broken floorboard. Their voices remain distant, but the dojo’s silence begins to thin around Chan.
Chan folds his hands through a sharp arcane sign. His human shape compresses beneath his clothing, shadow and black feathers replacing limbs and shoulders.
A large black crow bursts upward through the high opening, carrying the wrapped proof and stolen items secured within the spell’s transformed grasp.
The crow clears the rooftop as guards enter the dojo below. Mountain wind catches his wings, bearing him away from the castle and into the dark terraces.
