The Gardener’s Gate

Chan slips along the city’s outer edge, keeping to the narrow ground between the outer wall and the mountain wall. Gardens fill the vast bowl beyond.

Terraced plots descend in dark layers, their irrigation channels whispering beneath trellises and stone borders. Above them, the castle occupies raised ground near the bowl’s far crown.

The garden paths offer cover, but every wall and channel can carry sound.

Moonlight catches on wet leaves and pale gravel. Far inside the city, watch bells and muted voices drift through the mountain air, softened by distance.

The outer route bends around a stand of cypress, then narrows where the mountain presses close to the wall. A low gardener’s gate interrupts the stones ahead.

Beyond the gate, the gardens climb toward the castle’s elevated approach. No guard is visible from here, though lanternlight trembles somewhere above the terraces.

Reach the castle

“I stay low, behind bushes, trees, obstacles etc and mask my presence illusion chants.”

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +0)

The Gardener’s Gate

Chan Hoa sinks behind cypress roots and thorned bushes, keeping his silhouette below the wall’s broken line. Wet leaves press cold against his sleeves as he begins the illusion chants.

The whispered syllables bend the air around him. Moonlight seems to slide past his body, while the sounds of breathing, cloth, and shifting gravel disperse among the terraces.

Chan Hoa

The lanternlight blurs at the edges of the spell.

The masking takes hold, concealing his presence from ordinary sight and casual listening. Even the faint impression of him among the foliage becomes part of the garden’s restless shadow.

The cost settles immediately: each chant leaves a thin silver afterimage across his vision, and the mountain wall seems to shift whenever he looks directly at it.

Above, lanternlight continues trembling along the raised approach. No alarm follows. Hidden beneath the living cover, Chan Hoa remains unseen as the illusion holds.

“I remain patient as i pass through. I move slowest to remain silent when near beings, crossing close to them.”

The Middle-Aged Sentry

Chan Hoa waits until the garden’s night sounds overlap, then slips through the low gate at the pace of falling water. His illusion carries him into the lanternlit terraces.

Two sentries stand beside a stone stair ahead. One is a middle-aged woman in layered brown guardsman’s robes, broad-shouldered beneath a lacquered helmet; the other is a lean young man with a blue sash and a scar across his chin.

He crosses close behind them while their attention rests on the distant castle approach. He places each foot between gravel pieces, slowing further whenever cloth shifts or a breath turns.

Did you hear something by the gate?

The Middle-Aged Sentry

The Middle-Aged Sentry

Only water in the channels. Keep watching uphill.

Chan Hoa passes beyond the sentries and reaches the shadow of the next terrace wall, fully across their watch. But one damp leaf clings to his sleeve, and a faint crease in the gravel marks his route.

The silver afterimages still veil the castle lights. Behind him, the sentries resume their vigil without raising an alarm, unaware of how near he had been.

“I stay low and slow, picking the best paths”

SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +3)

The Gardener’s Gate

Chan Hoa stays low beneath the terrace lip, choosing dark strips of earth where shrubs break the moonlight and irrigation water masks the faintest movement.

He pauses whenever lanternlight sweeps across the paths, then advances during the returning shadow, placing his feet on packed soil instead of loose gravel.

The water covers my steps.

A narrow service path rises behind trellised vines. Chan follows it through the garden’s layered cover, keeping the stone terrace wall between himself and the sentries.

The damp leaf slips from his sleeve into the weeds. Its small movement disappears beneath the channels’ whisper and the distant toll of a watch bell.

He reaches the upper garden’s shadow, where a cedar screen overlooks the castle approach. From here, the lanterns and passing guards are visible without exposing his position.

“I take my time to pick the best route to climb with gear, the castle. Watching out for trip alarms”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

The Gardener’s Gate

Chan Hoa studies the upper garden from beneath the cedar screen, tracing the castle’s approach through lantern gaps, drainage channels, and strips of bare stone.

His gaze finds the alarms: taut dark cords crossing the stair’s shadow, small bronze bells tucked beneath the terrace lip, and fresh dust disturbed around their anchors.

Chan Hoa

The cords are newer than the stonework.

He takes the longer route along a retaining wall, testing each foothold before committing his weight. Climbing claws unfold from his outfit and bite into mortar without scraping.

The ascent demands patience. Twice he waits through a lantern sweep, and once he circles a concealed line whose far end vanishes beneath a guard post.

By the time the moon shifts behind cloud, Chan reaches a narrow service ledge below the castle approach, above the garden alarms and hidden from the passing guards.

The careful inspection costs him precious time, leaving the castle watch pattern uncertain; bells sound again somewhere uphill before he can map their rhythm.

“I move snails pace when nearby watches and pause behind foilage/obstacles”

SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +1)

Chan Hoa advances at a snail’s pace along the service ledge, keeping one shoulder close to the retaining wall while the cedar foliage breaks his outline.

Whenever a watchman crosses the lanternlit approach above, Chan folds motionless behind leaves or a jutting stone, letting cloth, bells, and footsteps pass over him.

The guards watch the path, not the shadows beneath it.

A lantern pauses overhead. Chan remains crouched behind a curtain of cedar branches, breathing shallowly as gold light combs across the ledge and withdraws.

He resumes only when the next patrol turns uphill, placing each foot on broad stone and avoiding the loose grit gathered beside the wall.

The slow advance carries him beneath the castle approach, where an overhanging platform and dense foliage conceal him completely from the passing watches.

Above, the guards continue their circuit without alarm. The bells remain silent, and Chan Hoa settles into the deeper shadow beneath the platform.

“Since the watch is becoming dense as i asend the castle, i use their noise and the wind to mask my movement, stepping and climbing when they step to mask my noise”

SUCCESS (Fair Stealth, rolled +0)

The Gardener’s Gate

Wind pours down the mountain, combing the cedar branches and rattling the castle’s hanging bells. Above, a patrol’s boots begin their measured circuit.

Chan Hoa moves with them, setting each climbing claw as a guard plants his foot, then pausing whenever the wind slackens or the patrol’s rhythm falters.

The watchmen’s voices drift across the approach, masking the faint bite of metal into mortar. Gusts carry the remaining sound away into the dark terraces.

He climbs past the platform’s supports and reaches a higher service landing beneath the castle wall, concealed by roof shadow and wind-bent cedar boughs.

One claw slips against a damp seam during the final pull, striking stone with a small, sharp click. A patrol above pauses, but the next gust covers it.

The landing is clear, but that sound carried.

The guards resume their steps without raising an alarm. Chan Hoa remains pressed beneath the castle’s overhang, higher than the approach and hidden from the passing lanterns.
