Strangers Beyond the Cave

Pale mountain light spills through the cave mouth. Albeon wakes beneath the lingering warmth of the night, his blue scales cooled by stone and thin alpine air.

Beside him rests Rayrse, an adult male dragon with deep red scales, swept black horns, and broad wings folded close against his powerful frame. His breathing is slow, but not peaceful.

Rayrse

Tracks. More than one. They found us before we found them.

Fresh marks cross the ash near the entrance, cutting through disturbed snow. Their edges remain sharp, and one print bears the hooked impression of a metal-shod boot.

A broad shadow glides over the pale opening, briefly swallowing the morning. Loose snow sifts from the ceiling as something heavy pauses outside.

Rayrse

Rayrse

Do not move yet. Whoever waits beyond the entrance has not crossed the threshold.

The shadow withdraws, then returns with a second shape beside it. The cave holds its breath, leaving only a narrow span before the strangers enter.

“I quietly study the strangers beyond the entrance”

Albeon lowers his head beneath the cave’s shadow and studies the entrance through a narrow gap. Outside stand two adult figures: a broad human man in a gray fur cloak, iron-shod boots, and a hooked spear, beside a lean elf woman wrapped in a dark blue mantle, her pale braid pinned with bone.

Albeon

Albeon

The man leads; the elf watches the slopes, not the cave.

Their faces remain partly veiled by snow and cloth, but their equipment is clear. The man carries fresh rope and a short iron-bound shield; the elf holds a covered lantern and wears a silver badge shaped like a mountain peak.

As Albeon shifts his weight for a better angle, one claw scrapes stone. The small sound clicks through the cave, and loose grit trickles from the wall.

Rayrse

Rayrse

They heard that. Hold still.

The elf’s head turns toward the darkness. Through the gap, Albeon sees her raise two fingers, silently warning her companion, while the man tightens his grip on the hooked spear.

Director's notewhole tale

I whisper to my mate Rayrse in dragon speak in a groggy tired tone

Director's note

As i lay my head down

“"Worry not my heartwing. There just mortalings." "Besides, I can sense their aura. They're not strong enough to hurt us."”

Worry not, my heartwing. They are but mortalings. I can sense their aura, and they are not strong enough to hurt us.

Albeon lets his head settle against the cold stone, his whisper fading into the cave. The effort leaves his limbs heavy, and his breath stirs the ash.

Rayrse

Rayrse

Your senses may be dulled by sleep, Albeon. Do not mistake quiet power for weakness.

Outside, the elf woman’s covered lantern opens by a finger’s width. A thin blue radiance spills across the entrance, touching the air where Albeon’s aura lingers.

They know we are here. The dragon’s strength is veiled, but not absent.

The broad man advances one careful pace, bringing the hooked spear across his body. Snow crunches beneath his iron-shod boot as the cave’s narrow shelter becomes impossible to ignore.

Rayrse

Rayrse

Keep your head down, heartwing. Your reassurance has given them courage to approach.

“Are the strangers hunting us specifically?”

NO (Even, rolled 83)

The elf’s blue radiance lingers over the cave mouth, then dims. Her attention shifts from the darkness to the fresh tracks scattered across the slope.

Not them. The trail passes beneath this mountain, but it does not begin here.

The broad man lowers his hooked spear a fraction. He studies the ash, the snow, and the narrow entrance with the wary patience of a hunter following another quarry.

Then the signs crossed their shelter by chance. We seek the fugitives beyond the ridge, not dragons in a stone hollow.

Rayrse’s breath eases, though his wings remain folded tight. Outside, the strangers’ posture loses its first sharp edge, and neither steps across the threshold.

Rayrse

Rayrse

You hear that, heartwing? We are an obstacle in their path, not the purpose of it.

The covered lantern closes. Snow whispers over the slope as the pair confer beyond the entrance, leaving the cave’s shelter unclaimed and undisturbed for the moment.

“Are the fugitives connected inside our refuge?”

NO, AND WORSE (Unlikely, rolled 89)

Albeon lays his head against the cold stone, exhaustion settling through his neck and shoulders. Beyond the entrance, the strangers’ quiet conference breaks beneath a distant cry from the ridge.

There. The fugitives have crossed the lower pass. Their trail is fresh, and something follows them.

The broad man turns toward the mountains, but the elf’s silver badge suddenly glimmers. A thread of blue light climbs from it, marking the cave mouth against the snow.

Hadrik

Then this hollow is no refuge. If the fugitives reach it, we must close the way before they bring their pursuers here.

Rayrse

Rayrse

Their quarry is coming toward us, heartwing. Worse, that badge has told others exactly where we lie.

Far below, answering horns sound from the pass. The elf woman steps back from the entrance, while the broad man raises his hooked spear and watches the descending trail.

We have moments. Whatever sleeps within that cave, it will soon stand between the fugitives and the hunters.

Director's note

I get up and calmly confront the strangers about their intentions. My large size a magic presence is overwhelming to them

Albeon lowers his head to the cold stone and whispers to Rayrse in a groggy dragon tongue. His breath rolls softly through the cave as horns answer from the pass.

Rayrse

Rayrse

Rest if you can, heartwing. But the moment is closing around us.

Then Albeon rises. Stone creaks beneath his weight, wings unfolding enough to fill the hollow, while a vast, magic-laden presence presses through the entrance.

Albeon

Albeon

Strangers, state your intentions.

The broad man staggers back a pace, spear wavering. The elf woman’s lantern slips against her mantle, its blue glow shrinking beneath Albeon’s overwhelming aura.

Hadrik

We seek fugitives crossing the lower pass. We did not come to challenge you, great dragon.

the lean elf woman

Nor do we claim this hollow. But hunters follow them, and those hunters will not spare anything in their path.
