The Witch

Lance follows The Witch out of the inn and into the cold. The village lane narrows fast, packed mud glazed with frost, and the warm window behind them fades to a single amber eye.

She leads him past shuttered cottages and a blacksmith’s cold forge to a low stone cottage at the edge of the last field. Smoke curls from its chimney in a thin, stubborn thread.

Hest

Here. My hearth takes work, not wonder. Step inside and see it for yourself.

The door swings inward at her touch, and a rush of warmth spills out, carrying the smells of peat, herbs, and old ash. The room is small, neat, and crowded with copper hooks, bundled roots, and a hearth big enough to matter.

Hest

Hest

The fire must be kept kindly. Feed it well, clean it, and do not let it go sulky. In return, the cottage keeps us both from the dark.

Lance

The hearth is older than the rest of the room.

She steps aside, leaving the threshold open to Lance, one hand resting on the lintel as if she has done this before and expects no trouble from the night.

Confirm the witch’s protection for the night

Lance steps inside, and hesitantly says "What should I call you? Your actual name, I mean. And uh, also, I uh, don't suppose you know any, uhm, male witches, perhaps?" (The hearth is a male fire spirit)

Lance steps over the threshold, and the cottage swallows the cold behind him. The Witch does not move to block him, only watches while the hearth throws gold across the room.

What should I call you? Your actual name, I mean. And, uh, also, I don’t suppose you know any male witches?

Hest

Hest

You may call me Hest. It is not a secret worth guarding tonight.

Hest

Hest

And yes. Men who work with witchcraft exist, though they are often called other things, depending on who is speaking.

Her answer comes easy, but she glances at Lance’s muddy boots as if weighing the cost of his honesty. A drop of frost melts from his hem onto the stone floor.

Hest

Hest

The hearth hears names well. Tell it yours, and it may choose to mind you.

The fire gives a low, living crackle, and the room feels less like a stranger’s cottage and more like a place making room for him.

Lance gently removes his shoes, setting them by the door, not wanting to dirty Hest's floor. He kneels by the hearth, and says awkwardly "My name is Lance." (the hearth fire spirit has a human male form and a name), hesitantly, Lance asks "Do you... Have a name?"

Lance slips off his shoes and leaves them neatly by the door. He kneels at the hearth, careful not to drag village mud across Hest’s stone floor.

Lance

Lance

My name is Lance.

The fire answers with a warmer pulse, and the room seems to settle around him.

Lance

Lance

Do you... have a name?

Hest

Hest

It does. The hearth does, as all old things do, if one listens properly.

Hest

Hest

Call it Bracken. It has borne that name longer than I have borne mine.

A thin line of frost on Lance’s hem melts away into the wet patch on the floor. Hest’s hand lowers beside the open ledger, and the fire’s glow steadies, as if approving the bargain.

Hest

Hest

Bracken will know you now. That is protection enough for the night, if you keep its fire fed.
