Barricade Under Corporate Assault

The quantum aperture seals behind Byron above a jungle-punk industrial zone, where enormous vines coil around smokestacks and solar furnaces. Rain turns the red soil to slurry.

Ahead, shamanic native technicians and an Amazonian women’s tribe have built barricades from cargo plating, woven fiber, and disabled drones. Their settlement glows beneath emergency shields.

The investigation team arrives through staggered portals. Mara Venn—lean, brown-skinned, and sharp-jawed—, a middle-aged woman with cropped gray hair, a weatherproof government coat, and a scarred data tablet, surveys the defenses.

We need documented protocol violations before the ministry authorizes intervention. Testimony, manifests, command records, anything verifiable.

Across the clearing, the tycoon’s tech giants deploy crawler rigs while armored mercenaries and private militia advance behind humming projectors. A corporate insignia burns across their shields.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

There. The first barricade is under attack. If it falls, evidence may disappear with the people protecting it.

A concussive pulse ripples through the rain. The barricade’s shield flickers, defenders scramble to reinforce its power nodes, and every nearby camera pivots toward Byron.

Document the corporate protocol violations

“Byron quickly takes cover, observing the situation for any context, as well as any potential environmental hazards to use in causing the mercenaries to retreat.”

SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

Barricade Under Corporate Assault

Byron slips behind a toppled cargo hauler as another pulse strikes the barricade. Its armored flank blocks the cameras, while rainwater streams beneath the chassis toward the settlement’s power conduits.

Byron

Byron

The projector array is drawing from exposed conduits, and the saturated ground is carrying the discharge.

From cover, he maps the clearing: three projector nodes anchor the mercenary advance, crawler rigs feed them power, and a ruptured solar-furnace line vents superheated steam beside the eastern approach.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Blackwell, report. What do you see?

A militia squad bunches around the eastern projector, boots sinking into red slurry. The furnace’s emergency valves blink amber, and a maintenance drone repeatedly flags unstable pressure.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

If that furnace line ruptures, it can blind the advance without touching the defenders. Give me a clean assessment before anyone moves.

“Byron swiftly conveys an effective and direct insight to the his visual assessment of the weak spots.”

The eastern projector is the weak point. Its squad is standing in the furnace line’s discharge path, and the exposed conduits are feeding all three nodes. Vent the line, then cut the crawler feed. The pulse network collapses without striking the barricade.

Byron sends the assessment through Mara’s encrypted channel, but the hauler’s damaged sensor mast flares during transmission. A corporate camera snaps toward his cover and marks the signal source.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Confirmed. That is actionable. I’m forwarding the sequence to the settlement technicians and recording your visual basis for the ministry file.

Mara’s tablet projects the plan across the rain: release pressure first, isolate the crawler feed second, and leave the defenders’ shield untouched. Technicians move toward the valves.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Blackwell, your cover is compromised. Keep the camera occupied if you can, but do not cross into the discharge zone.

The eastern maintenance drone accepts the technicians’ command. Amber indicators turn green as the emergency valves unlock, and steam begins venting away from the settlement.

Across the clearing, the militia squad turns toward the rising plume. The three projectors stutter out of synchronization while the corporate camera continues tracking Byron’s position.

“With a deep sigh, Byron grabs the the corporate camera and expresses a random fact before diving it away–sprinting to perform the first objective of the plan in releasing the pressure with improvisation.”

FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled +0)

The camera’s tracking arc is mechanical, not adaptive.

Byron

Byron

Random fact: rainwater conducts electricity better when it carries dissolved metal.

With a deep sigh, Byron lunges from cover and catches the corporate camera housing as its mount pivots. He wrenches it loose, then dives it across the slurry toward a disabled drone.

The camera strikes the drone and keeps transmitting through its cracked casing. Its image now frames the eastern approach, pulling the corporate network’s attention away from Byron for only a few seconds.

Byron sprints toward the furnace line, boots skidding beside the vent controls. He improvises a lever from a loose conduit brace and forces the emergency handle downward.

The valve opens halfway. A violent plume blasts across the projector squad’s path, scattering their formation, but pressure warnings remain red and the line still threatens to rupture.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

The camera is feeding them a false angle. The manual bypass is exposed beneath the maintenance panel, Blackwell. Use that, and the line can still be stabilized.

Barricade Under Corporate Assault

“Byron continues onwards, improvising to follow Mara's suggestion.”

SUCCESS (Great Security, rolled +1)

Barricade Under Corporate Assault

Byron reaches beneath the maintenance panel as steam lashes across the eastern approach. The exposed bypass is a manual pressure regulator, its contacts glowing beneath a film of rain and residue.

He braces one steel-knuckled glove against the housing and improvises a bridge from the loose conduit brace, forcing the bypass contacts into alignment while the line shudders.

Byron

Byron

The bypass is isolated from the projector network.

The regulator engages with a hard metallic clack. Pressure drops through the furnace line, the plume narrows, and the amber warnings settle into steady green.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Stabilization confirmed. The discharge is contained, and the settlement shield remains untouched.

The eastern projector coughs once and shuts down. Across the clearing, the remaining nodes lose their shared feed as the crawler rigs enter protective lockdown.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Excellent work, Blackwell. I have the sensor record, the false camera angle, and a documented corporate assault to submit.
